This monograph contains proceedings from an International Symposium on Vaccines for OIE List A and Emerging Animal Diseases, held in Ames, Iowa, USA, in September 2002. The purpose of the meeting was to review the availability, safety and efficacy of veterinary vaccines for OIE List A diseases and for selected emerging animal diseases. An objective was to gather information on the suitability of vaccines for use as an aid in controlling an outbreak in a previously disease-free country. Information on current vaccines and research on vaccines under development was presented. The role of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in setting standards for control of animal diseases was reviewed as well as regulatory considerations for emergency use of vaccines in the USA and EU. A survey of the worldwide availability of vaccines for OIE list A diseases was presented and experiences in using vaccines for controlling transboundary animal diseases were discussed. This volume will be of special interest to animal health researchers in university, government, or commercial settings attempting to develop better vaccines for these important diseases.
