This newly expanded and updated fifth edition will be the largest and most comprehensive of the five editions and new topics and chapter authors have been added.  The authors have created the most comprehensive and up-to-date review of the nutritional strategies available for the prevention of disease and the promotion of health through nutrition. Patients are looking for credible information from their health care providers about a whole range of subjects covered here, including ß-carotene, lycopene, antioxidants, folate, and the myriad of bioactive phytochemicals found in garlic and other foods. With sections on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy among many others, this volume will be of great value to practicing health professionals, including physicians, nutritionists, dentists, pharmacists, dieticians, health educators, policy makers, health economists, regulatory agencies and research investigators. An entire section covers nutrition transitions around the world including Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia as well as goals for preventive nutrition in developing countries.

Preventive Nutrition: The Comprehensive Guide for Health Professionals, 5th Ed. is an important resource for thousands of health professionals who have been utilizing the previous editions since 1997.

Adrianne Bendich, Ph.D., is the president of Consultants in Consumer Healthcare LLC. She is an internationally recognized expert on women's health, calcium and vitamin D in bone health, folic acid and pregnancy outcomes, and the effects of antioxidants and carotenoids on immune functions. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and is the editor of 10 books for health professionals. Prior to her position at Consultants in Consumer Healthcare, she was the associate director of clinical nutrition research at Roche Vitamins, the director of innovation at SmithKlineBeecham/GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), and the director of medical affairs at GSK Consumer Healthcare. She was corporate representative to the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) for 9 years because GSK Consumer Healthcare provided all calcium and vitamin D supplements for the WHI study. She received her Ph.D. from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey-Newark. Dr. Bendich is also series editor of the Nutrition and Health book series. Dr. Deckelbaum received his B.Sc. in 1963, and his M.D. and C.M. in 1967 from McGill University. Dr. Deckelbaum's research interests concern human plasma lipoproteins, and the cellular effects of dietary fats and free fatty acids. His research has been supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the US Agency for International Development, and private industry. His work has contributed to better understanding of mechanisms whereby human lipoproteins are structurally remodeled in the plasma compartment, factors modulating receptor-lipoprotein interactions, and nutrient-gene interactions. He has also led international NIH and USAID programs integrating nutrition with risk factors of cardiovascular disease in children of different genetic backgrounds, as well as the molecular biology of intestinal parasites with clinical and epidemiological manifestations of infection, with emphasis on chronic diarrhea and malnutrition. Overall, an important objective of Dr. Deckelbaum's program is to develop investigators who can translate basic nutritional questions into basic lipid and cellular biology. His research complements a professional interest in global health, which grew out of work in the Middle East and Africa.

"Each chapter is amply referenced. A very useful book for nutritionists, diabetologists, endocrinologists and general practitioners." (Zvi Laron, Pediatric Endocrinology Reviews, Vol. 13 (4), June, 2016)

"This is the fifth edition of book on preventive nutrition that was first published in 1997. ... This could be a nice addition for nutrition graduate students as well as for hospital and other health institution libraries. ... This edition, like the previous one, is quite interesting, informative, and up to date. It would be a good addition to any healthcare professional's resources." (Amy Hess-Fischl, Doody's Book Reviews, April, 2016)
