In recent years there have been major advances in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. The new generation of antipsychotics offers several advantages over the conventional antipsychotics, particularly with regard to improvement of negative symptoms like apathy, anhedonia, alogia, avolition, etc., as well as a better side effect profile, including a lower risk of tardive dyskinesia. Dr. Masand reviews some of the reasons to switch patients from conventional antipsychotics to the newer antipsychotic therapies and discusses withdrawal syndromes that may occur during the switch. He also describes reasons to switch patients from one atypical antipsychotic to another based upon differences in side effect profiles.
