This edition of "Athletic Training and Sports Medicine" covers such topics as: legal issues in sports medicine; injury prevention; evaluating the athlete; physiology of the musculoskeletal system; applied principles in treatment and rehabilitation; sports psychology; and medical conditions.
The third edition of "Athletic Training and Sports Medicine" is more specifically tailored to the needs of practising athletic trainers and primary care physicians, although educators should find it a useful reference for students. Many of the chapters from the second edition are supplemented and enhanced by new chapters. The major topics covered include: legal issues in sports medicine; injury prevention; evaluating the athlete; physiology of the musculoskeletal system; applied principles in treatment and rehabilitation; the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system; sports psychology; medical conditions; gender specific conditions; and athletes with different abilities.

Behnke (PEM, BS, 1962 Ph.D., Professor of Physical Education for the School of Health and Human Performance at Indiana State University, took a sabbatical during the 1995-96 academic year to travel and collaborate with another UIUC graduate, Dr. Robert Moore. The two professors have been coauthoring an entry-level athletic training text that they plan to dedicate to their mentor, Bob Nicolette (PEM, BS, 1956), who served as head athletic trainer at UIUC from 1957 to 1969. Dr. Behnke was Nicolette's successor and served from 1969 to 1973. In 1995, Dr. Behnke was recognized for his outstanding contributions to sports medicine and the athletic training profession when he received the Distinguished Service Athletic Trainer Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Through close involvement with various academies and associations, he has been instrumental in establishing nationwide the: (1) recognition of athletic training as an allied health profession; and (2) accreditation of athletic training education programs. Dr. Behnke's contributions greatly benefit education and training in the field of athletics. He currently chairs both the National Athletic Trainers' Association Professional Education Committee (NATAPEC), an association that accredits graduate programs in athletic training, and the Joint Review Committee for Educational Programs in Athletic Training (JRC-AT), a committee of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) that accredits programs in athletic training. Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., A.T.C. was hired by the Department Exercise and Sport Science in July 1995. Since that time he has served as the director of the Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program Sports Medicine Research Laboratory, and Director of Graduate Studies. His teaching responsibilities include Cadaver Anatomy (graduate), Therapeutic Modalities, Injury Evaluation and Human Anatomy. Kevin is a 1995 graduate of the University of Virginia's doctoral program in Sports Medicine. His dissertation was titled "The effect of mild head injury on postural stability and cognitive function." He has continued working on this line of research, and has published articles related to mild head injury and balance in several journal including Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Athletic Training, Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, and Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. He recently completed two book chapters related to balance and orthopaedic rehabilitation, and one on Assessment of Mild Head Injury in Sport. Kevin received his Master of Science degree from The University of Pittsburgh in 1992, while working as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He earn his Bachelor of Science degree from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 1989. Kevin serves on the editorial board for three journals and chaired the NATA's Pronouncement Committee on Mild Head Injury. He has presented several papers related to concussion in sport.
