Vijay K. Varadan is currently the Twenty-First Century Endowed Chairin Nano-and Bio-Technology and Medicine, and Distinguished Professorof Electrical Engineering and Distinguished Professor of BiomedicalEngineering (College of Engineering) and Neurosurgery (College ofMedicine) at University of Arkansas. He is also a Professor of Neurosurgeryat the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He also holdshonorary doctorate degrees in Nano-, and Bio-Technologies and Medicinefrom India. He joined the University of Arkansas in January 2005 afterserving on the faculty of Cornell University, Ohio State University andPennsylvania State University for the past 39 years. He is also the Directorof the Center of Excellence for Nano-, Micro-, and Neuro-Electronics,Sensors and Systems and the Director of the NSF Center for WirelessNanosensors and Systems (WiNS). He is also a Director of the GlobalInstitute of Nanotechnology in Engineering and Medicine (GINTEM).The purpose of this Institute is to create a global effort to solve current andfuture medical concerns using advanced nanotechnologies by developingResearch Hospitals at selected overseas countries. Varadan has concentratedon the design and development of various electronic, acoustic andstructural composites, smart materials, structures, and devices includingsensors, transducers, Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), synthesisand large scale fabrication of carbon nanotubes, NanoElectroMechanicalSystems (NEMS), microwave, acoustic and ultrasonic wave absorbersand filters. He has developed neurostimulator, wireless microsensors andsystems for sensing and control of Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, glucose inthe blood and Alzheimer's disease. He is also developing both silicon andorganic based wireless sensor systems with RFID for human gait analysisand sleep disorders and various neurological disorders. He was a founderand the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Smart Materials and Structures. He was the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nanotechnologyin Engineering and Medicine. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Smart Nanosystems in Engineering and Medicine, and Editor of the Journal of Advanced Materials Research. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Microlithography, Microfabrication and Microsystem. He serveson the editorial board of International Journal of Computational Methods. He has published more than 500 journal papers and 15 books. He has 15 patents pertinent to conducting polymers, smart structures, smart antennas, phase shifters, carbon nanotubes, and implantable device for Parkinson'spatients, MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes. He is a fellow of SPIE, ASME, Institute of Physics, Acoustical Society of America. He has many visiting professorship appointments in leading schools overseas. Linfeng Chen received his B. Sc. degree in modern applied physics (major)and his B.Eng. degree in machine design and manufacture (minor)from the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1991, and he receivedhis PhD. degree in physics from the National University of Singapore in2001. From 1991 to 1994, he was an assistant lecturer at the Departmentof Modern Applied Physics, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. From1994 to 1997, he was a research scholar with the Department of Physics,National University of Singapore. From 1997 to 2001, he worked at theDSO National Laboratories, Singapore, as a project engineer and later amember of technical staff. From 2001 to 2005, he was a research scientistat the Temasek Laboratories, National University of Singapore. Since 2005,he has been a member of research faculty at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He is a senior member of IEEE. His research interests mainly include microwave electronics, functional nanomaterials, and energy harvesting and storage devices.
