In his deeply empathic approach to therapy, Dr. Walsh explores the client's existential and spiritual anxieties and helps her to recognise them as part of a positive developmental process. He also works with her self-condemnation and sense of unworthiness, and enables her to identify her personal strengths, a process which proves deeply meaningful to her.
In addition to exploring existential, spiritual and developmental issues, this demonstration also emphasises collective social and cultural factors.
Roger Walsh, MD, PhD, DHL, graduated from Australia's Queensland University with degrees in psychology, physiology, neuroscience, and medicine, and then came to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar. He is now at the University of California at Irvine where he is professor of psychiatry, philosophy, and anthropology, as well as adjunct professor of religious studies. Dr. Walsh's research and writings span several areas. The main topics include enhancing psychological health and well-being, meditation and contemplative practices, the nature of religion and spirituality, and the psychological roots of our contemporary social and global crises. He has been deeply immersed in contemplative practices as a practitioner, researcher, and teacher for over three decades. Dr. Walsh's books include Staying Alive: The Psychology of Human Survival (one of New Option's ""Outstanding Books of the Year""), Paths Beyond Ego (one of Common Boundary's ""Most Influential Books""), Meditation: Classic and Contemporary Perspectives (""Outstanding Academic Book of the Year Award""), and Essential Spirituality: The Seven Central Practices, with a foreword by The Dalai Lama. Collectively, Dr. Walsh's writings and research have received over two dozen national and international awards and honours, while his teaching has received one national and six university awards.
