There are three main approaches to the management of social anxiety disorder: educational, pharmacological, and psychosocial. Dr. Davidson presents a comparative review and discusses how to measure the severity of symptoms and the impact of treatment. He first outlines a simple model of the disorder for patient education. He goes on to identify various pharmacotherapeutic strategies, including the use of SSRIs, benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, and MAOI classes and to consider their effectiveness vis a vis different aspects of the disorder. Finally, he describes psychosocial treatments, including cognitive behavioral techniques and social skills training.
