Compulsive overeating and obesity are significant health problems for many adolescents and young adults. These conditions are often related to complex biological, psychological, and social interactions, rendering the long-term outcome of treatment disappointing. The most successful treatment methods utilize a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach based on a biopsychosocial model. Newer medications hold promise as adjunctive therapy for these difficult-to-treat conditions. Binge eating disorder is the newest of the eating disorders, and effective treatment for this condition is still being explored.
Dr. Kreipe and Dr. Stewart present state-of-the-art knowledge about compulsive overeating, obesity, and binge eating disorder. They begin with a brief outline of definitions and go on to discuss the epidemiology and causes of these conditions. They then describe techniques which take a to-the-point, accurate history and perform a focused physical examination. The biopsychosocial model forms the background for their discussion of models of care, which stresses the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach, and emphasizes family-centered care. They review effective ways to enhance motivation for improved weight control and the indications for and limitations of medications. Finally, they describe cognitive behavioral strategies to empower patients to succeed.
