As managed care arrangements like PPOs, IPAs, EAPs, and HMOs cover an increasingly large percentage of the American population, the interest in and need for effective short-term psychotherapy continually grows. Insurance company HMOs, clinics, counseling services, and consumers all desire and often financially require brief treatment for complex psychological problems that have been treated with a more traditional gradual therapy. Making optimal use of limited time and resources while providing high-quality professional services requires special skills and orientation.
Drawing on psychodynamic, strategic, cognitive-behavioral, and TA/Gestalt approaches, Dr. Hoyt presents several modes of short-term therapy, which are illustrated through videotaped vignettes and examples. He emphasizes productive therapist attitudes, methods for finding a focus, ways of facilitating patients' strengths, and ethical and practical issues of communication with managed care companies, including treatment planning and coordination of efforts with case managers.
