It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the 35th Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Society of Mining Professors (SOMP), held from September 4th to 10th, 2025, in Aachen, Germany.
Under the theme “SOMP Connects the World”, this year’s conference brings together mining academics, professionals, and partners from around the globe to exchange knowledge, strengthen international cooperation, and address the pressing challenges and opportunities the mining sector faces today. The proceedings presented here reflect the wide range of perspectives, expertise, and innovation that shape our discipline and our global community.
The SOMP Annual Meeting is not only a scientific conference—it is a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and inspiration. It provides an opportunity to share cuttingedge research, explore new approaches in education and training, and discuss
strategies for a responsible and sustainable supply of mineral resources in a changing world. Especially in times of technological transformation, global uncertainty, and increasing demands for raw materials, the role of academic collaboration and forwardlooking education becomes more crucial than ever.
We are particularly proud to host the SOMP meeting in Aachen—a city with a deep historical connection to mining and a long-standing academic tradition through RWTH Aachen University. As one of Europe’s leading technical universities, RWTH Aachen stands for excellence in research, innovation, and the education of the next generation of engineers and scientists. We are confident that this setting provides the ideal backdrop for fruitful discussions and valuable new impulses.
My sincere thanks go to all contributors—authors, reviewers, speakers, sponsors, and organizers—who have made this conference and the proceedings possible. Your dedication and commitment to advancing our field is both inspiring and essential. I hope this publication serves as a lasting resource and a reflection of the shared ambition that unites us: to shape the future of mining in a responsible, innovative, and global way.
On behalf of the organizing team, I wish you an engaging and memorable conference
experience and look forward to welcoming you in person to Aachen.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Elisabeth Clausen
Chair of the 35th SOMP Annual Meeting
Director of Institute for Advanced Mining Technologies,
