Experimentation and Statistics for Biologists empowers students to learn the experimentation and statistics within the framework of biology. Through real case studies, personal stories, and problems that expand on key concepts, students learn how experimental design and statistical analysis shape scientific understanding.
Written primarily for 16-to-19-year-old students, and those transitioning to university, Experimentation and Statistics for Biologists provides a highly accessible overview of key elements to grasp the essential role of experimentation and statistics in biological sciences.

This primer empowers students to learn the experimentation and statistics within the framework of biology. Through real case studies, personal stories, and problems that expand on key concepts, students learn how experimental design and statistical analysis shape scientific understanding.

Key features include:
- A resource introducing prospective and current students of undergraduate-level bioscience to a range of topics from this dynamic experimental science, enticing readers to study further
- Special features boxes of case studies, scientific approach, bigger picture
- Its modular format offers a high degree of flexibility, with teachers being able to draw on specific volumes that augment the post-16 curriculum, university lecturers being able to draw on specific volumes at different stages of the undergraduate curriculum
- Digital versions have accessible, functionality tools, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support

This primer introduces the statistical tools most commonly required in A-level biology and equivalent courses, including standard deviation, standard error, chi-squared tests, Spearman's rank correlation, and t-tests. But it goes beyond formulas-placing these tools in exciting, real-world contexts that reveal their relevance and power. From the ethics of clinical trials to the evolution of species, students explore how data shapes our understanding of life.

All titles in the series are available for students and institutions to purchase in a
variety of formats: the e-book and Science Trove offer a mobile experience and
convenient access along with functionality tools, navigation features, and links that
offer extra learning support. For more information about e-books, please visit

Professor Stephen Land has a personal chair in Physiology and Biomedical Education at the University of Dundee, is a Chartered Science Teacher and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, and a Fellow of the Physiological Society. In his spare time, he likes to explore with his dog, look under things and generally get very muddy. Land started out in zoology and marine biology laboratories in the UK (Aberdeen), Canada (UBC, Vancouver) and the USA (Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole) that based their science in an idea called the August Krogh Principle: that many disease processes can be understood by studying animals that have evolved adaptations to survive in extreme conditions.
