This book reports on intelligent systems and methods applied to engineering production and maintenance. Being the first of two volumes, it specifically focuses on advanced tools for analysing, designing and optimizing manufacturing processes, increasing their automation, safety, and sustainability. It also covers applications of intelligent methods for improving transport systems, discussing topics in mechanical engineering education alike. Based the 5th International Conference on Intelligent Systems in Production Engineering and Maintenance, ISPEM 2025, held on June 25-27, 2025, in Wroclaw, Poland, this book offers a timely snapshot of intelligent systems applications and advances in industry 4.0 in engineering design and manufacturing.

Anna Burduk is a Professor at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST), a researcher at the National Centre for Research and Development, and a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Her work focuses on production system optimization, machine learning, and risk assessment in manufacturing systems. She has authored over 200 papers, supervised six PhD students, led multiple research projects, and served as a consultant for several major Polish companies.
M. Anthony Xavior is a Professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, India. He has authored around 215 papers and supervised 11 PhD scholars in the areas of materials and manufacturing. He has secured research funding from various national and international organizations for projects focused on new material development (metal matrix composites, high entropy alloys) for industrial applications.
Jose Machado is an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minho, Portugal. He has co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and has supervised (and continues to supervise) a total of 10 PhD students. He coordinates several research projects on mechatronics and automation. His main interests lie in Industry 4.0, particularly in the design and development of cyber-physical systems.
Suthep Butdee is an Associate Professor in Manufacturing Engineering and Chairman of the D.Eng. and M.Eng. programs in Production Engineering at King Mongkut s University of Technology North Bangkok, Thailand. He has published 65 papers indexed in Scopus and has supervised 18 PhD students as the principal advisor. He served as project manager for a Franco-Thai project for 10 years and as project director for a national consulting program for over 300 SMEs. He is currently an expert in Automation and Robotic Engineering at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep, Bangkok, Thailand.
Kamil Krot is an Assistant Professor with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland. He has authored and co-authored 70 publications. His research interests include intelligent technologies for Industry 4.0, workstation monitoring, and communication with manufacturing execution systems.
Phatchani Srikhumsuk is an Assistant Professor with a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Strathclyde, UK. She is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep (RMUTK), Bangkok, Thailand. Her research focuses on sustainable manufacturing, carbon neutrality, risk assessment, and the circular economy. She leads over 10 projects in environmental sustainability and has co-supervised two international PhD students in environmental engineering and industrial innovation.
Dagmara Laczynska holds a Doctor of Engineering degree from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology (WUST). Her research focuses on optimizing production processes, particularly in resource management and risk analysis methods. She has authored 43 publications on these topics and continues to build her expertise through R&D projects carried out in collaboration with industry.
