This volume is a collection of extended abstracts authored by women mathematicians in Latin America. The contributions included span key areas such as analysis, partial differential equations, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. Beyond the technical content, the volume reflects on the impact of women in mathematics in Latin America and forms part of the broader initiative led by the International Community of Mathematicians from Latin America (ICMAM) to foster visibility of researchers in Latin America.
This volume celebrates the role of women in advancing mathematics in Latin America.
Pamela E. Harris is a Mexican-American mathematician and associate professor at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee whose main area of interest is in algebraic combinatorics. She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and is a Fellow of both the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics. She is the recipient of numerous honors for her excellence in teaching and mentorship, including the 2022 MAA Haimo Award. She is also the co-founder and President of Lathisms, an initiative promoting Latins and Hispanics in the mathematical sciences.
Jaqueline G. Mesquita is a professor of mathematics at the University of Brasília and President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (2023 2025). Her main areas of interest are differential equations and functional differential equations. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of São Paulo and has received numerous honors, including the L Oréal-UNESCO-ABC For Women in Science Award, the Science, She Says! Award from the Italian government, and the title of Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy. An advocate for women in mathematics, she serves as an ambassador for the IMU s Committee for Women in Mathematics and has been a fellow and collaborator with the Heidelberg Laureate Forum and The World Academy of Sciences. In 2025, she was appointed President of the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean (UMALCA).
Yuriko Pitones is an associate professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico. She earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from CINVESTAV-IPN in 2019. Her main areas of interest are commutative algebra, combinatorial algebra, and coding theory. She is a member of the National System of Researchers in Mexico. She has received several prestigious awards, including the Sofia Kovalevskaya distinction, the Weizmann Prize, and the Arturo Rosenblueth Prize. In 2024, she was awarded a grant from the Committee for Women in Mathematics for her work on increasing the visibility of Latin American women in mathematics and has been a member of ICMAM Latin America since 2023.
