An accessible, accurate, and up-to-date introduction to quantum field theory

Physics has moved on since the publication of the 2nd edition of Quantum Field Theory in 2010, most notably by the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2013, and this 3rd edition has been revised and updated throughout to take account of this and other recent advances. However, its three main objectives remain unchanged. They are:

To explain the basic physics and formalism of quantum field theory
To make the reader proficient in theory calculations using Feynman diagrams
To introduce the reader to the gauge theories, which play a central role in elementary particle physics, namely quantum electrodynamics (QED), quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and the unified theory of electro-weak Interactions.

Intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics with an interest in theoretical and experimental particle physics, Quantum Field Theory aims to give a relatively straightforward introduction to what can sometimes seem a challenging subject.

Graham Shaw is Emeritus Professor of Physics in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester, UK, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. His research is focused on particle physics phenomenology. Franz Mandl (1923–2009) was a British theoretical physicist. He was a co-founder and editor of the renowned Manchester Physics textbook series and the author of many influential physics textbooks.
