This text introduces the concepts and techniques used in the study of signals and linear systems. It shows how they are applied in solving problems in digital signal processing, communication and control systems. It provides a balanced treatment of continuous- and discrete-time concepts.
This text introduces the concepts and techniques used in the study of signals and linear systems. It illustrates how these techniques are applied in solving problems in digital signal processing, communication systems, and control systems and provides an integrated and balanced treatment of continuous-time and discrete-time concepts as is consistent with their roles in engineering practice. Examples of real world systems are used to give strong motivation for the study of signals and systems subject matter. The four Fourier representations are treated in parallel to emphasize similarities and differences between them. Relationships between different Fourier representations are motivated from applications, such as sampling, which involves both continuous-time and discrete-time signals in one system and thus naturally relates the discrete-time and continuous-time Fourier transforms. MATLAB is integrated in a way that preserves complete instructor flexibility. There is a separate section in each chapter devoted to exploring the concepts from the chapter with MATLAB.
The instructor can easily skip this section, or have the students work through it in parallel with the rest of the sections in the chapter. Each chapter also has numerous computer experiments designed to be performed with MATLAB.
