The standard code is capable of carrying out stress analysis and fracture mechanics calculations for two-dimensional linear elastic isotropic materials. This module extends the range to include orthotropic and anisotropic elasticity cases, as required for the analysis of composite materials.
The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is now widely regarded as the most accurate numerical tool for the analysis of crack problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics. This "crack growth" software utilizes the BEM and and removes the task of remeshing as the crack propagates, which is one of the drawbacks of finite element software. Furthermore, it evaluates accurate stress intensity factors for which the BEM is renowned. The software uses the established criterion for crack propagation and evaluates residual strength as well as fatigue life calculations. The anisotropy module keeps the features of the isotropic program and enables it to analyse orthotropic and anisotropic elasticity cases, as required for the analysis of composite materials. It can be used to evaluate mixed-module stress intensity factors for crack problems in orthotropic or generally anisotropic materials. The module can also be used to carry out general stress analysis of cracked or uncracked structures and to simulate crack growth analysis in unidirectional and symmetrical composite laminates.
