Engineering is mathematics in action. But engineering students do not always see the link between what they learn in mathematics and how this applies to engineering problems. As long as humans are in existence, there will always be problems to solve, from basic requirements like sustaining sufficient amounts of food to major accomplishments like constructing multifunctional homes. Most of these problems require mathematics to solve. This book bridges the gap between mathematics and engineering by including examples from engineering in the solution of mathematical problems, demonstrating that mathematics is a tool for solving existing real-life problems. The material in this book is suitable for engineering, chemistry, physics and mathematics students and covers the basic areas of application of integration, ordinary and partial differential equations. Examples and Exercises with Solutions provided allow and encourage students to develop their problem-solving acumen, an essential skill for successful engineering in practice.

Ramoshweu Solomon Lebelo (PhD) is a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the Vaal University of Technology. He is also a researcher in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where partial differential equations are highly applicable. Radley Kebarapetse Mahlobo (PhD) is also a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the Vaal University of Technology. He has been lecturing Mathematics since 2001. He is also involved in Mathematics Education research, with a focus on mathematics learning and students’ challenges related to good performance in the subject.

Chapter 1: Application of integration; Chapter 2: First order differential equations (ODEs); Chapter 3: Higher order differential equations; Chapter 4: Fourier series; Chapter 5: Partial differential equations.
