This practical guide covers the basics of IC engineering: technology, process, device and circuit design. Readers learn to assess design tradeoffs, how to use software tools to simulate and verify, and how to implement basic analog and digital building blocks.
An integrated circuit (IC) engineer must be familiar with the major disciplines involved in IC implementation, specifically: technology, process, device and circuit design. The approach used in this text is to discuss these topics from a first order analytical point of view, to allow an understanding of the design tradeoffs involved, and then to use computer aided design (CAD) tools to carry out simulation and verification, leading to the implementation of basic analog and digital building blocks. This book is designed as a text for a senior-level course in integrated circuit engineering in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) programs. It assumes that the student has had prior courses in electronic devices and basic electronic circuits. The material can be covered in a one semester course including 36 hours of lectures supplemented by a 36 hour computer aided simulation and design laboratory, using commonly available software tools such as SUPREM, SEDAN, SPICE and CADENCE ANALOG ARTIST (or alternative software tools).
This book focuses on the technology and design of analog, digital and RF integrated circuits, including exposure to computer aided IC design tools at the semiconductor process, device, and circuit layout level. Topics include: IC fabrication review, MOS IC Process Modules and Components; RF (Bi) CMOS IC Process Modules and Components; Compact Modelling, Characterization, and Design Automation; Bipolar/CMOS Digital, Analog, and RF IC Building Blocks; Packaging and Yield. The labs included will expose students to the major steps in the development of a multi-purpose (Bi)CMOS process.

Professor Andre Salama Dr. Salama received his Honours B.A.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1961, his M.A.Sc. degree in 1962 and the Ph.D. in 1966. He joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 1967 and in 1977 was promoted to the rank of full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he held the J.M. Ham Chair in Microelectronics from 1987 to 1997. In recognition of his scholarly achievements and preeminence in the field of microelectronics, he was appointed to his present position of University Professor in 1992. Professor Salama's excellent scholarly work and contributions to the development of power semiconductor devices and the design of integrated circuits is further recognized through the many awards he has received. He was awarded the ITAC/NSERC Research Fellowship in information technology (1989-90), the Canada Council I.W. Killam Memorial Prize in Engineering (1994) for outstanding career contributions to the field of microelectronics. He is also the recipient of the IEEE Millennium Medal, the Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Awards from NSERC and the Canadian Semiconductor Technology Conference. Dr. Salama is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and of the Electrochemical Society.
