In a sprawling, colorless city called Monochra, lives Iris - a young male visual artist trapped between routine and creative stagnation. The city, Monochra, represents both a physical place and the confines of Iris's own mind - a rigid, muted landscape that limits imagination and expression. The people of Monochra, known as the Canvases, drift through their days as blank slates, shaped and controlled by those in power. They lack true individuality or passion, conforming to the monotony imposed upon them. At the top are the Palettists - the rulers who control which colors, ideas, and emotions are permitted. They dictate the city's artistic boundaries, suppressing any creativity that threatens their order. But beneath the surface are the Varnishers - rebels who reject the fake gloss imposed by the Palettists. They fight to reveal raw, authentic expression and challenge the oppressive system. Iris is caught in this conflict - torn between the passive Canvases, the controlling Palettists, and the rebellious Varnishers. As he struggles to break free from Monochra's constraints, he begins to see cracks of color and life, realizing that true escape may come from transforming the city - and himself - from within.
