Bob Dowd is a retired Member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and currently resides in Manitoba, Canada. He has enjoyed writing fiction and non-fiction novels for the past 15 years with several of his books available on Amazon.
Jack was exceptional. Out of fifty billion people on planet Earth, he was chosen as the best candidate. But best candidate for what? He would soon find out. The people in power needed to send someone to check out nearby solar systems in an effort to find a place suitable for expansion. There were just too many Earthlings on Earth. Was there a catch? Of course. There's always a catch. In this case, two of them. First, he wouldn't be coming back. He would live in his spaceship, he would explore one system after another, and he would do that until the day he died. Or until he just stopped. It would really be up to him. The second catch was a little more interesting. Jack would not have the company of another human being---but he wouldn't be alone. His companion would be a gorgeous artificially-intelligent android named Brenda. Which, in itself, is no big deal. Except that she is a new model, a learning android. She would adapt to situations and gain knowledge daily. The biggest surprise for Jack---She was already programmed to be his wife. No alcohol. No shotgun. Just instantly married. Oh---And part of her programming was to learn how to be what the (female) programmers thought was a typical wife. In other words, Jack would soon find himself alone on a small spaceship with what was fast becoming a typical relationship. Could it be love? Could Brenda be the perfect partner? Or would she just kill him with her bare, android hands and finish the mission herself?Jack had always wanted a beautiful android to call his own. Be careful what you wish for Jack!
“There is nothing wrong.”
“Then why that response?”
“I’m not sure. Something in my programming indicated that that was the appropriate response for that question.”
“Is there something bothering you right now? Something that I have done, or have not done, that is concerning you?”
“I have noticed that, sometimes, you give me orders instead of asking me to do something. I think, if we are to be partners, husband and wife, that that should change. That is what is bothering me.”
“Why did you not tell me what was wrong when I first asked?”
“Again, I don’t know. It just felt like the answer I should give you.”
“Anything else?” Jack was not a religious man, but right now he was praying that was it for now. He had shit to process, and one pile at a time would be nice.
“No, that’s it.” Brenda leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you.”
“Okay. I’ll be more considerate in how I approach things that I need you to do around here.”
“I know you will.” And with that little bomb, Brenda rose and went back to work.
‘Fuck me.’ ‘I know you will’? Was that a response from a woman who was happy her man was understanding her? Or a threat from a robot just before she pulls his head off and refuses to give it back. Ha.
Jack fell back into his chair. It quickly adjusted to his new posture, and fit him perfectly.
“BOB. Can you, or SUSAN or KNIFE learn?” Jack had never been more scared of a question than this one. More than one learning computer could be the end of him.
“No. We only have our programming. That will never change. It will always be the same, unless yourself or Brenda adds and/or deletes more programming.” BOB fielded the question and gave the answer. Quick and short.
“Thank Christ.” Again, not religious, but it felt like he had just been pardoned by the Governor. Ha.
“Any more acronyms that I should know about?”
“Yes.”
“Give me the top three. Then I have to get back to work.”
“‘W’ ‘I’ ‘F’ ‘E’. Woman – In Flight Experiment. ‘W’ ‘O’ ‘M’ ‘A’ ‘N’. Watch Out – Maybe Atomic – Nuclear. ‘M’ ‘A’ ‘N’. Mainly A Nitwit.” BOB waited. He had no clue what he had just put forward to Jack. If he had, he would have certainly laughed out loud. They were all funny as shit.
“Hahaha. Well, that certainly sets the bar for the relationship, doesn’t it? Good grief. This was need to know information back on Earth. Those pencil neck little bastards set me up I think. I bet she gets her period before this is over.” Jack sighed. At least the trip was going to be interesting. Haha.
“’P’ ‘E’ ‘R’ ‘I’ ‘O’ ‘D’. Protect Everyone – Run – Instrument Of Death.”
Jack almost fell over he was laughing so hard. “Are you shitting me? That’s in your programming? Was it put there by the men, or the women?” Jack was incredulous. Why would anyone program an android to have periods?
BOB kept speaking. “That acronym was put there by the men who designed me. There is no indication that the women who designed Brenda have any knowledge of it.”
Okay. So maybe the acronyms were an early warning system to prepare Jack for whatever was put into Brenda’s computer brain by the women. The more he thought about it, the more he became convinced it was a contest between the computer programmers. The women trying to put a real woman into space to fuck with Jack, and the men trying to warn him of what might be coming. Both trying to win whatever battle they thought would be raging as the ship screamed across space at ten times the speed of light.
Nerds. They have their place, but they know nothing of the real world. Maybe he should have brought one of them along to translate. Ha.
“We’ll talk later. I definitely need to know more.” Jack rose and returned to his ‘Captain’s’ chair---Wondering to himself how long he would hold the position before Brenda bumped him out.
More days passed. Jack tested Brenda in a few areas, just so he had an idea of what she could do. Her speed and strength put her abilities so far above his that he didn’t even try to measure them. He was just glad she was on his side. Ha.
SUSAN knew everything there was to know, about, well, everything. She had all the information they had on planet Earth, and she quickly amassed more as they continued on their journey. She was basically a computer sponge. And it was all at Jack’s disposal.
BOB knew everything about the ship, and he could access the controls as commanded, or as he saw fit. Like pulling them out just before they became space dust.
KNIFE was a goof-ball. He only reacted to commands and queries. And he would pass along communications as he heard them. Otherwise, he was just a pain in the ass.
Jack learned and he never forgot. If he saw it, heard it, or otherwise absorbed it, he remembered it. That was one of his super-powers.
Finally, they were approaching Barnard’s Star. SUSAN had been gathering more information as they closed in on it. Time to share all that she knew with Jack and Brenda.
The star, as mentioned, was a red dwarf, only fifteen to twenty percent the size of the Earth’s Sun. Mankind had spent hundreds of years trying to decide if there were planets orbiting Barnard’s Star. Now they knew. In fact, there were seven of them. Susan confirmed this just before they slowed down to where they could take a ‘look’ at the new solar system up close and see for themselves.
Four small planets that appeared to be just big spinning rocks. Two bigger ones that were both in what mankind would consider the habitable zone. (Doesn’t mean there aren’t things outside the ‘habitable zone’. Just means a human could not survive without wearing a space suit all the time). And finally, one planet that was half the size of the Earth. It was quite close to the dying star and showed surface temperatures that would make Earth’s core blush. In other words, it was fucking hot.
Jack told SUSAN to set up near one of the four that appeared to be ‘just big rocks’.
Done.
After ordering BOB to start an orbit, Jack ‘asked’ Brenda to accompany him to the surface of the planet they were circling. Time to check shit out.
Brenda agreed with a smile. Oh joy. Good smile? Or bad smile? Ha.
“SUSAN. Any signs of anything down there?”
“No.”
“Let’s go.” Jack suited up and walked quickly to the launch craft with Brenda right behind him. Seconds later they were seated and buckled up.
“Brenda. Take us down please. I want to listen to SUSAN as we get closer.”
No response. None needed. He had said please.
Brenda took the craft down within a kilometer of the surface and then began cruising along at what can only be described as a high rate of speed. The craft would gather all basic information and transmit everything back to SUSAN.
Three hours later, after a brief landing on the surface to gather samples, they shut it down and headed back to the ship. As suspected, it was just a big fucking rock.
Back on the ship SUSAN took them to the next planet of the four. Same routine. Same results.
And the third.
And the fourth.
After the fourth disappointing voyage, Jack stated, “I’m turning in. Let me sleep until I wake up. Unless it’s an emergency.” He had no idea why he added that. They always woke him up if they thought anything was an emergency. And sometimes when it wasn’t.
Every fucking time! Ha.
“Once I wake up, we’ll try one of the two that are in the habitable zone. Brenda. Please pick out the one you think will be the most interesting and that’s where we’ll go when I’m done my nap. SUSAN. You get all the information you can on the one Brenda picks, and give that information to Brenda. BOB. Check the ship. KNIFE. DO NOT wake me! I’ll fry your ass if you do.”
And with that threat, Jack headed for the bedroom. Brenda followed.
“Why do you follow me?”
“Because you will want to make love to me.”
“I do. And, I know we’ve discussed this before, but I just want to make sure, so I’ll ask again. Do you want to make love to me?”
“Yes. I’m enjoying it more and more each time. My programming allows me to learn from experiences, and I’m learning to enjoy having sex with you.”
“Nice.” Jack wanted to ask more questions, but he was tired, and really---he wasn’t sure how to ask the ones that had been running through his head since this whole crazy mission had started.
Does she enjoy seeing him naked?
Does she get turned on? Is that even possible?
Does she want foreplay? Does she know what foreplay is?
Is she interested in more positions?
Does she have orgasms? Is she programmed to fake orgasms? (Jack could imagine the female pencil necks having a great laugh over that).
Okay! Turn off whatever the fuck is causing all these questions. Another time. Right now, back to basics.
Jack removed his clothes. Brenda removed hers. Jack got a hard on. Brenda climbed on top, taking him inside. Wamm,...
