'What do you do when the love of your life wants to love someone else?'

'I want an open marriage. I want sex. And I just can't do that with you anymore.'
'How can you do this to me, Tristan? After everything?'

Sophia's heart breaks when her husband, Tristan, pushes for an open marriage after twelve years, saying her life as a housewife and mom has killed their spark. Desperate to hold their twelve-year bond together, Sophia reluctantly agrees.

Worse than the open marriage is how swiftly Tristan dives into the dating pool, blatantly violating their agreed boundaries.
Hurt and angry, Sophia escapes to her art school, where she meets Nathaniel Synclair, a charming new sponsor who lights a fire in her. They talk, and Nathaniel suggests a wild idea: he'll pretend to be her fake lover to get back at her husband's double standards.
Caught in a love triangle between her broken marriage and Nathaniel's pull, Sophia hesitates, sparking a mix of want, lies, and truth that shakes up all she knows about love, trust, and who she really is.

'And if you're open to it, I'd like to be that someone for real-even if it means playing the fake lover in your open marriage. What do you say?'

Note: A must-read for fans of billionaire romance, love triangles, open marriage, fake relationships, emotional drama, contemporary romance, and betrayal and trust.

Book 4/4  of a Love Triangle Billionaire Romance Series. The story is in its completed version (exclusive copyright owned by WhosNovel).

Chapter 165: Away for Three Weeks?

Sophia’s P.O.V

Hearing the hesitation and worry in Nadia’s voice, I suddenly felt a knot twist in my stomach. I didn’t even know why, but it came out of me before I could stop myself.

“Is everything okay? Nadia, tell me it’s okay. Please don’t stand there quietly like that, just tell me.” My voice cracked more than I wanted it to, and Nathan immediately turned to me, frowning.

Memories from a year ago flashed before my eyes…Gabriella’s madness…her standing on the rooftop with Vince in her arms…her maniacal laughter…and the unnatural way her body had contorted into when she had hit the ground…

Nadia raised her hands quickly, shaking her head, “Sophia, no, no…it’s fine. It’s nothing like that. Please, breathe, okay? I didn’t mean to scare you.”

But my chest was already tight, and I pressed my hand against it, whispering, “God, don’t do that to me, Nadia. Don’t stand there looking so serious like it’s bad news. I can’t…I really can’t take that right now.”

She crossed the room and placed her hand lightly on my arm, her tone softening. “Sophia, I promise you, it’s fine. It’s not family. It’s not healthy. It’s not dangerous. It’s just… work.”

I felt my knees buckle just slightly, and I had to grip the back of the chair to steady myself. Relief came so strong it almost hurt, like I’d been holding my breath for too long.

“Work?” I asked again, as if I didn’t quite believe her.

“Yes, work,” she assured me with a faint smile. “Our European clients just called an emergency meeting. They want us over there next week to finalize the contracts and start rolling out the project. It’s urgent, Sophia, but it’s good news, not bad news.”

Nathan let out a long sigh beside me, rubbing the back of his neck. “That scared the life out of us, mom. You can’t just walk in looking like that and drop it on us.”

“I’m sorry,” Nadia said gently, glancing back at me, “I didn’t mean to frighten you. I really didn’t. I know… I know what you’ve been through…I should’ve been careful.”

I swallowed hard and forced a shaky laugh, but it didn’t come out sounding right. “For a second, I thought it was happening all over again. A year has passed, Nadia, a whole year, but sometimes it feels like yesterday. Gabriella left her shadow on everything, and I’m still…” My voice caught, and I shook my head.

“I still panic at the smallest things.”

Nadia squeezed my arm tighter. “That’s natural, Sophia. No one expects you to just erase it. You’re healing, but healing doesn’t follow a calendar.”

Nathan stepped closer and slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me against him. “Hey, breathe. You’ve got me, remember? Nothing’s happening, nothing’s going wrong. It’s just work.”

I nodded into his chest, letting his steady heartbeat calm me down. “Just work,” I repeated under my breath, as though saying it enough times would drill it into my head.

Then Nadia sighed, shifting awkwardly. “The thing is… I can’t go to Europe alone. They’ll want both of us there, me and Nathan. It’s non-negotiable.”

My head snapped up instantly. “Nathan?”

He blinked. “Wait, what?”

“Yes,” Nadia said carefully, like she was trying not to add more weight to me than I could handle. “That’s why I had to come back. They specifically asked that you come along too. We’ll only be gone for about two weeks, but…”

I cut in before she could finish, the panic rushing back. “Two weeks? No, no, I can’t…Nathan, we haven’t been apart since…since then. You know I can’t sleep without you next to me. I can’t even close my eyes unless I hear you breathing beside me. How am I supposed to stay here while you’re gone?”

Nathan turned to me quickly, both hands on my shoulders now. “Sophia, look at me. Hey, look at me. Nothing’s going to happen. You’ll be safe. I’ll make sure of it.”

“That’s what you always say,” I whispered, my throat burning. “But when you’re not here, I can’t convince myself. I lie awake all night listening for footsteps, waiting for shadows to move. I…I don’t think I can do this.”

Nadia pressed her lips together, guilt flashing in her eyes. “Sophia, if there was another way, I’d take it. I swear. But they’re investing so much into this project, and they trust both of us to make it work. If we don’t go, we risk losing them entirely.”

Nathan looked torn, running his fingers through his hair. “Damn it. Sophia, I don’t want to leave you, you know that. But this deal… it’s important for the company.”

“I don’t care about the deal,” I cried, shaking my head. “I care about you being here. I care about not waking up in the middle of the night reaching for you and finding empty space.”

He pulled me into his arms again, holding me tightly. “Then we’ll figure something out. Maybe you can come with us? Or maybe we find someone you trust to stay here with you until I get back. I won’t just leave you to fight through this alone.”

“I don’t know if I can go back to Europe,” I admitted, my voice muffled against him. “We have four kids, Nathan. We can’t suddenly uproot them and I can’t leave them in anyone else’s care either.”

Nadia’s expression softened even more. “Then maybe you shouldn’t come. Let Nathan and I handle this part. We’ll be quick, I promise. You won’t even realize we’re gone before we’re back.”

But the thought of two weeks without him made my chest ache again. “No, Nadia, you don’t understand. I will realize it. Every second, I’ll realize it. Every night will feel like a year.”

Nadia sighed quietly, watching us, and whispered, “We’ll make this work, for the deal and for you both. We’ll make it work.”

Listening to their concern for me, I couldn’t help but start to feel guilty. They were trying their best to make me feel comfortable despite the importance of their work. It made me feel incredibly selfish…spoiled even.

Could I really cling on to my paranoia when it would affect Nathan’s work? I didn’t want to be the person to cause troubles or hold him back…

Nathan must have noticed the way my hands wouldn’t stay still, the way I kept wringing them together like the answer to my nerves might suddenly appear in the lines of my palms. He shifted closer, held me tighter to his side, his chin brushing against my temple. But his warmth did nothing to ease the ache in my chest.

“Mom,” he said, his voice steady, but I could hear the tightness underneath. “How long will this actually take? The deal, the signing, the arrangements…how long exactly?”

“Two weeks,” she answered calmly. “That’s the time we’ve been given. But if there are corrections or amendments needed for the contract, it could stretch to three. That’s the maximum window.”

I think my heart stopped for a beat. Three weeks. My throat burned as though I had swallowed fire. Three weeks without Nathan sounded unbearable, like a piece of me was being carved out and placed on a shelf just out of reach.

“Three weeks?” I whispered, and even to my own ears, it sounded fragile, broken. “That’s… that’s so long.”

Nathan tightened his arms around me, pulling me closer until I could feel his heartbeat against my back. “I know,” he murmured, pressing his lips to my hair. “I know, sweetheart. I don’t like it either.”

Nadia leaned forward then, her eyes soft but her tone firm. “Sophia, listen to me. You don’t have to face this alone. Move into the Sinclair Mansion for the time being. There’s better security there, and there will always be people around to take care of you. It’ll ease everyone’s mind.”

I shook my head almost instantly, but she didn’t let up. “Or,” she continued, “if you feel more comfortable, you can go stay with your parents. You’d be safer there, and you’d have familiar company.”

But I shook my head immediately. “My parents are going to France, remember? That trip they’ve been planning for months?” I looked down at my hands, my fingers twisting together again, betraying me. “I can’t ruin that for them. They’ve been looking forward to it for so long. I won’t call them back because of my paranoia.”

Nadia reached out again, placing her hand gently over mine. “Sophia, it’s not paranoia if it’s a valid concern. You’ll be vulnerable. This isn’t something to take lightly.”

“I know,” I admitted, my voice breaking. “But this is something I have to deal with myself. I can’t keep leaning on everyone, not for everything. If I ask my parents to come back, I’ll never forgive myself. And if I move into the Mansion, I’ll feel like I’m in a cage. I need to… I need to stand on my own, even if it scares me.”

Nathan tilted my face up to his, his thumb brushing against my cheek. “You’re stronger than you realize, Sophia. But I hate the thought of you doing this without me.”

I swallowed hard, forcing a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “And I hate the thought of you being gone for three weeks. But you have to go, Nathan. We both know that.”

Nadia gave a small sigh, but she didn’t argue further. “Just promise me you’ll consider it, Sophia. Even if you don’t stay at the Mansion or with your parents, let us put extra security measures in place for you. Please. Don’t dismiss...
