CHAPTER57: THE SCENT OF PEACE

Damian’s POV

The aroma of food drifted into my room, filling the air and pulling at my hunger. For a moment, all I could think about was the tempting smell, but then reality reminded me of what had happened earlier.

I had left Lira sitting alone in the living room, with anger burning in me as I stormed upstairs. When I got into the room, I drowned myself in calls and inquiries, desperate to find a way to clear my name from the false accusations hanging over me.

I stretched my arms and walked to the window, pulling the curtains aside. The sky outside was already dark. Evening had passed into the night.

The scent of food floated in again, it was stronger this time, and I instantly knew it was Lira’s cooking. Her food always had a special aroma, rich and tempting. it's the kind that made you want to eat before you even saw the meal.

But with that sweet thought came the sting of guilt. I remembered how I had raised my voice at her, how harsh I had been. I hated myself for it, I had allowed my frustration over the fake allegations against me to spill over onto her.

I walked out of the room and strode to the living room, Lira was in the kitchen, I could tell by the way the aroma grew stronger, and I knew she would soon finish cooking.

Before that happened, I had to go meet her. I had to let her know how sorry I was, that I hadn’t meant the words I said. I wanted her to understand that it wasn’t her fault. The weight of those lies being spread about me was heavy, but it was no excuse.

  Lira’s POV

I was in the kitchen cooking dinner for everyone. The menu tonight was simple, it was grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, and corn on the cob.

I thought maybe if the food was warm and homely, it would make the heavy mood in the house lighter. Nobody had been truly happy since the whole issue started, and neither was I. But cooking was my way of holding things together.

Damian had not come downstairs since he walked out angrily earlier. It was already night, and I couldn’t stop wondering if he was still upset with me. I hated arguments between us, and my heart longed for him to come back to me.

While I stirred the mashed potatoes, my mind drifted to Leo. I had learned my lesson. If he was truly the one who set me up, then I would make him pay.

He would not get away with trying to ruin my marriage, but something about it did not sit well in my heart. Why would Leo do such a thing? Why would he want to destroy me, or come between me and Damian?

No, it didn’t make full sense. Harold had always been the more devilish one. He had shown his colors many times before. Could it be that Harold and Leo planned the whole thing together? The thought kept ringing in my head until footsteps pulled me out of my thoughts.

I quickly turned my focus back to the food, I knew it was Damian. immediately, my heart beat faster, wondering if he had come to argue again or to make peace.

Just then, I felt strong hands slide gently around my waist. He pulled me close, hugging me from behind.

At this, my breath caught, and tears immediately stung my eyes. My heart stirred painfully and sweetly at the same time. This man, my husband was still the best thing in my life.

“I’m really sorry,” he whispered softly against my ear, with his lips brushing my neck as he placed a gentle kiss there.

The tears fell freely then. I quickly turned off the cooking gas, not caring about the food anymore, and let him turn me around to face him.

He cupped my face in his hands, wiping away my tears with his thumb. “It’s okay, baby,” he whispered again.

“I’m sorry too,” I replied in a shaky voice. “It was my carelessness that caused all this. I promise I will make Leo pay for what he has done.”

At that, Damian’s lips curved into a small smile. His eyes softened, and he said teasingly, “Hmm, Mrs. Blackwood, how exactly do you plan on making him pay? Are you going to fight him like in those action movies?” He raised his fists in the air playfully, pretending to throw punches.

A laugh broke out of me despite everything, that was one of the reasons I loved him. Even in the middle of chaos, Damian always knew how to make me smile, how to bring life back into the moment.

I wrapped my arms tightly around him. “I love you, Mr. Blackwood,” I whispered against his chest.

He stroked my back slowly, his hand was warm and reassuring, while he bent his head to inhale the scent of my perfume. For a long moment, we stayed like that, holding each other as though nothing else mattered in the world.

The moment was broken when Eloise walked in, carrying her bag to her shoulder. It looked like she was coming from an outing, the sound of her footsteps made me glance at the door.

The second she entered, she stopped and cleared her throat softly. Then Damian and I quickly let go of each other. though the warmth of his embrace still lingered.

Eloise walked closer, her expression softer than before. “Lira, I’m sorry for shouting at you earlier. Trust me, I really felt bad about it,” she said gently. Then she stepped forward and hugged me.

I smiled, feeling relief settle in my chest. “It’s okay, Eloise,” I replied, hugging her back.

For the first time all day, I felt a sense of peace. Because we are all back together.

Eloise let go of me and turned to glance at Damian for a brief second before her eyes came back to me. “Gosh, I’m tired,” she said with a faint smile. “I need to freshen up.” With that, she gave Damian a light smile, then walked out of the kitchen toward her room.

I stood quietly for a moment, my heart was softer now than it had been all day. I turned to Damian and gave him a small smile. Yet, even in that moment of comfort, my mind returned to the troubling thought, Leo.

How could he betray me like this? Was he truly working alone, or had Harold joined forces with him? I didn’t know. But one thing was certain. I would find out the truth. And when I did, I would make him pay for everything he had done.

The thought burned deep in my chest, leaving me restless. This wasn’t the end, it was only the beginning.

CHAPTER58: LINES CROSSED

The next morning, the sun slipped through the curtains and filled the room with a soft golden light. It cast a warm glow on the walls and floor, making the room look peaceful. I blinked my eyes open slowly, but my body still heavy from sleep.

When I turned, I saw Damian beside me. He was still sleeping, his arm was resting loosely around my waist, holding me like he wanted me close even in his dreams.

Carefully, I bent down, lifted his arm away from me, and slipped out of bed. I didn’t want him to wake up.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand and unlocked it quickly. My fingers moved before I could think too much. I searched for Leo’s contact and typed a short message.

“Let’s meet at Café Bloom by 10.”

Café Bloom was a small coffee restaurant near the house. Not too far. I pressed send and held my breath. It didn’t take long for Leo to reply.

“Is everything okay? I’ll be there. Don’t worry.”

His message only made my chest tighten. I dropped the phone on the bed and stood up.

Moving carefully, I walked to the wardrobe and pulled out a towel. My steps were light, almost like I was sneaking. I didn’t want Damian to know I was going out early to cause trouble with leo. If he woke up and asked, he might not allow me to go.

I went into the bathroom, slipped off my nightwear, and stepped under the shower. The water ran down my skin, it was hot and soothing. For a moment I closed my eyes, but my mind was already racing ahead to the meeting with Leo.

Ten minutes later, I came out with steam following me. My towel clung tightly around my body. Damian shifted slightly on the bed, rolling onto his side. I froze on the spot, my breath caught in my throat. If he woke up now, everything would be ruined.

I waited until his breathing grew steady again, then relaxed. I moved quickly to the wardrobe, put on a simple gown, and slid my feet into a flat shoe. From the drawer, I picked up a nose mask. I would cover my face outside. I didn’t want people to recognize me and start gossiping.

I grabbed my car keys, gave Damian one last look, and walked quietly out of the room.

  ******

The compound was silent except for the sound of birds in the distance. My car was parked beside Damian’s, and it was next to the other cars.

I opened the door, and the dogs in their cage started barking loudly. Then the sound echoed around the compound.

The security guard rushed out of his post, but when he saw me, he bowed politely. I gave him a faint wave, then pressed the remote attached to my car keys.

The gate opened slowly, then i slid into the driver’s seat, started the car, and drove out.

It took me twenty minutes to reach Café Bloom. I parked in the lot and adjusted my mask before stepping out. I didn’t want to cause any scene if someone recognized me.

Just as I locked the car, my phone beeped again. It was a message from Leo.

“I’m at the café already, beautiful. I will Order coffee for two. ”

At this, my lips pressed tightly together. His words burned in my chest. Maybe it was just the thought of seeing him after everything. Maybe it was his shameless attempt to flirt....
