Eight years ago, Alpha Kael Draven shattered her soul when he rejected his fated mate.

Lyra Thorne was devastated-until she became dangerous.

Now she's returned to the Blackfang Pack as a supernatural mercenary, hardened by years of survival and cursed by magic that won't let her forget. When Kael's wolf recognizes its true mate, the bond that was violently severed ignites like molten fire, threatening to destroy them both.

But the rejection wasn't a choice. It was a curse.

And the broken mate bond is tearing holes in reality itself.

As shadow creatures slip through the cracks and enemies circle closer, Kael and Lyra are forced into an impossible situation: undergo an ancient ritual to rebind what was never truly broken, or watch their entire world collapse. But reconciliation means facing the truth-that Kael's greatest betrayal wasn't his fault, and Lyra's survival came at a cost that neither of them expected.

In a world where destiny demands loyalty and love demands sacrifice, can they choose each other when choosing each other means war?

Dive into a paranormal romance dripping with tension, passion, and the kind of second-chance love that makes you believe in fated mates-even when fate seems determined to tear them apart.

Chapter 1: The Ghost in the Shadows

maya’s pov

The moon hung heavy above the Thornwood Forest like a silver eye watching us all. I could feel it on my skin—that tightness that came before something big happened. The kind of feeling that made my wolf pace inside my chest, restless and hungry for truth.

I stood near the edge of the clearing, my arms crossed over my chest, watching the pack gather for the Moonlight Hall meeting. Bodies moved everywhere. Warriors checked their weapons. Elders settled onto stone benches worn smooth by centuries of use. The air smelled like pine and earth and something else I couldn’t quite name. Fear, maybe. Or anticipation.

“You see how tense everything is tonight?” Mira whispered beside me. She was my best friend since childhood, and her dark eyes kept moving from face to face in the crowd. “Something’s coming. I can feel it in my bones.”

I nodded without looking at her. “The Alpha’s been different all week. Closed off. Not like himself.”

“Selene’s been different too,” Mira said, her voice dropping lower. She glanced around to make sure no one was listening. “I saw her in the market yesterday. She looked… relieved? That’s the only word I can use. Not worried like a Luna should be. Relieved.”

Before I could respond, the crowd began to quiet. That special kind of quiet that only happened when Kael Draven entered a space. The Alpha of the Blackfang Pack didn’t just walk into rooms. He consumed them. His presence was like a stone dropped into still water—everything rippled outward from him.

I watched as he moved through the gathered wolves. His shoulders were broad enough that he had to angle himself through groups of people. His hair was black as midnight, and even from where I stood, I could see the silver threading through his beard. At thirty-two, he looked like he’d lived a hundred lifetimes. His gray eyes held secrets. Dark ones.

Beside him came Selene Drayce, his chosen mate. She was beautiful in the way that important people were beautiful—all sharp cheekbones and controlled movements. Her dress was crimson silk, the color of Luna status. But Mira was right. Something was off about the way she held herself. Too stiff. Too distant from Kael. Even their hands didn’t touch.

“They’re not bonded,” I heard someone whisper behind me. “My sister swears the pack wards are still broken because he won’t complete the mate bond with her.”

“That’s ridiculous,” another voice responded, but doubt colored the words. “The Alpha would never—”

“Would never what?” a third person interrupted. “We all know something’s wrong. The wards have been weakening for months. Everyone feels it.”

I turned back to the platform at the front of the clearing. Kael stood there with Cassian Volkner, his enforcer and closest friend. Cassian was huge, all muscle and scarred skin. He’d been part of Kael’s inner circle since they were young warriors. Right now, he was watching the Alpha with an expression I couldn’t read. Worried, maybe. Or frustrated.

Kael raised his hand, and the crowd settled into complete silence. He was good at that—commanding attention without raising his voice. That was what made him dangerous. That was what made him Alpha.

“The Blackfang Pack gathers tonight to discuss matters of territory and security,” he said, his voice carrying across the clearing without effort. “Recent patrols have reported unusual activity at our eastern border. Nothing to panic over, but something we need to address.”

My wolf perked up. I hadn’t heard anything about unusual activity. I was part of the third watch patrol, and nothing had seemed out of place when I’d been on duty.

Mira’s hand found mine and squeezed.

Kael continued, “I’ve asked Cassian to brief the warriors on what we’ve discovered.”

Cassian stepped forward. His jaw was clenched tight. “Three days ago, we found tracks near the Blackwell Ridge,” he began. “A rogue wolf. Solo. Moving fast and with purpose. The scent was strange. We couldn’t identify which pack it came from, or even if it came from a pack at all.”

“A rogue?” someone shouted from the crowd. “On our territory?”

“Potentially,” Cassian said. “We don’t know for certain. The trail went cold at the northern river. But the wolf was heading inward. Toward the mansion.”

Whispers exploded through the crowd like sparks. Toward the mansion meant toward Kael. Toward the heart of our power.

I felt my heartbeat speed up. Beside me, Mira’s grip on my hand became almost painful.

“This is probably nothing,” Kael said, his voice cutting through the noise. “A curious rogue. Maybe a young wolf from another pack testing our borders. But we should be alert. Increase the watch patrols. Report anything unusual immediately.”

“What if it’s not a rogue?” one of the elders asked. He was old, his name was Garrick, and his voice shook slightly. “What if it’s from the Wraithborne Pack? They’ve been making moves on the southern territories.”

“Then we’ll deal with it,” Kael said flatly. “We’ve handled threats before. We’ll handle this one.”

But something flickered across his face. Something that made my wolf sit up and pay attention. Fear? No. Not fear. Something else. Something almost like recognition.

The meeting continued for another hour. Boring stuff mostly. Grain stores for the coming winter. Disputes between pack members over territory rights. A young wolf who’d gotten too aggressive with his training partner. Nothing that mattered compared to the secret Cassian had revealed about the rogue.

When Kael finally dismissed everyone, people filed out slowly, still talking. Still worried. Mira tugged on my arm to pull me along with the crowd, but I didn’t move. Something pulled at me. Some instinct that screamed I needed to stay. Needed to see what would happen next.

“Come on,” Mira whispered, frustration creeping into her voice. “We’ll get in trouble if we linger.”

“You go,” I said. “I want to talk to Cassian about the patrol schedule.”

She gave me a look that said she didn’t believe me, but she went anyway. That was the thing about Mira. She could read me better than anyone, but she didn’t push. Not really.

I waited until most of the crowd had cleared. The clearing emptied out until only a few warriors remained. Kael was talking quietly with Cassian near the stone platform. Selene had already disappeared. I couldn’t see her anywhere, which made sense. The mate bond between her and Kael was obviously fractured if what people were saying was true.

I pretended to straighten some fallen branches near the edge of the clearing. Kept my head down. Kept my movements casual. It was a trick I’d learned growing up—how to be invisible even when people were looking right at you.

“You’re certain about what you found?” Kael asked Cassian. His voice was low, meant only for his enforcer, but the wind carried it to my ears.

“The tracks were fresh,” Cassian said. “Three days old, maybe four. And Kael… the scent was familiar.”

I froze mid-movement.

Kael went completely still. Even his breathing seemed to stop. “Familiar how?”

“I can’t place it,” Cassian admitted. “But my wolf recognized it. That’s the only way I can describe it. Like seeing a face you haven’t seen in years but knowing it immediately.”

Kael turned away. He looked out at the dark forest beyond the clearing. His hands clenched into fists at his sides. “How many wolves know what you know?”

“Just me and the patrol team who found the tracks. I kept it quiet like you would want.”

“Good.” Kael’s voice sounded strained. Like he was holding something back. “Keep it that way. Tell them it was probably a territorial trespasser. Nothing serious. Tell them to stop looking.”

“Kael,” Cassian said, and there was something almost like pleading in his tone. “If it’s—”

“I don’t want to know,” Kael interrupted sharply. “Don’t bring this to me again unless there’s actual proof of a threat. Understood?”

Cassian’s jaw worked like he wanted to say more, but he just nodded. “Understood.”

They separated, and I watched Kael walk back toward the mansion. His shoulders were tight. His movements were controlled, but I could see the tension thrumming through him. Whatever that scent was, it meant something. Something big.

I stood there in the darkness for a long time after everyone had gone. My wolf was pacing, unsettled. The moon was climbing higher in the sky, and somewhere in the forest, something was moving. Something that made an Alpha lose his composure.

I decided then that I was going to find out what it...
