In the opening story, two female academically alchemists take part at a prestigious dig through forgotten ruins in search of ancient relics and, in the process, reclaim a place for women in a field long dominated by men. During their search they will find a dark truth and the true meaning of indomitable knowledge. Their discovery becomes both an act of defiance and a quiet rewriting of history.
The second story follows two university students: Violet, who carries an invisible burden and Nate, who is lost in addiction and depression. Violet's past was a lonely one and as she tries to overcome her suffocating feeling of isolation, their relationship unfolds like a fever dream; a raw portrait of love’s blurred boundaries between care and destruction. Cherry Life and Cigarettes is a story about a deeply personal friendship and an honest description of mental health.
In the final story, a young journalist sets out to write the biography of a renowned art restorer. What begins as admiration turns to moral conflict when she uncovers the restorer’s tragic secret. The novella circles around a beautiful, unique relationship between two women that haven’t found a place in the world yet.
Balancing intimacy with intellect, The Dark Academia Anthology examines how women navigate power, wisdom, love, and loss within systems that were never made for them. Confirmed contributions to the anthology include: ‘Archive of Eternal Oblivion’, a short novella by Charlotte Horvat, ‘Cherry Life and Cigarettes’, a short novella by Katharina Sutherland, and ‘What We See When We See It’, a short novella by Lydia Szyra.
Even as a child, Charlotte had a deep interest in ancient Greece and writing her own poems and stories. This interest soon turned into a deep fascination with ancient cultures and the archaeological research that revealed this knowledge to the modern world. She loves to immerse herself in fantasy novels and Gothic classics. She is currently working on her two debut novels and studies physics.
Katharina Sutherland started writing short stories and books in her childhood, and later discovered her love for writing poetry. Fascinated by the human mind she devotes her texts to raw emotions and the substance of life. She currently studies English and comparative literature.
‘What We See When We See It’ is Szyra’s first short novella, published in 2025. It’s one of her first works that actually sound like her and that mark a turning point in her writing, finding a literary voice among others.
