When he is not writing, Richard Alley spends his time golfing, gardening, baking, and woodworking. Additionally, he enjoys traveling the world and meeting people around the world.
The United States government has begun to turn on its own citizens as it attempts to move the population away from the democracy they've always known. However, despite the president being at the forefront, the true villains remain lurking in the shadows. The government is quick to act on those who have discovered their true intentions, quickly ostracizing them from regular society. However, shunning them from society has caused patriots to gather, people that are needed if America wants to retain their liberty and freedom. Suddenly, a former government employee has a vision for fighting back against the tyranny, but he will need help. He contacts a former ally, Suzi Johnson, to help fulfill his plan. From the wilderness of Montana to the mountains of South Carolina, the patriots of America will have to fight to survive to put their country back on the right path. Will they be able to solidify their plan and take the United States off the path of doom?
Chapter 1
2087
Sarah was thinking about her job at MCAS San Diego, and the fact that she was bored stiff in her position. That night she went home and told Isaac, “I can’t take it anymore!”
“Then quit! We don’t really need the money, so go in tomorrow and tell them you quit.”
“Really? I’ve never quit anything in my life.”
“Hon, if you hate it, then quit it. You’ve never quit anything before, because you loved being a Marine, you loved being in Special Ops, you loved being at ATJ.”
“That’s because those jobs made me feel like I was contributing to the world. Now I feel like all I am contributing to the world is more waste paper.”
“To be honest, my job is sucking the life out of me too.”
“Maybe you should quit your job too.”
“Yeah, that sounds like a great idea, we both quit our jobs and just kick around for a while.”
Sarah laughed as she said it, because she thought it was a joke and too absurd to be taken seriously.
Then Isaac said, “You know, I should take my own advice.”
One year earlier, 2086
Sarah and Isaac Engblom were new members of their community. After working together with the Alliance for Trans-jurisdictional Justice, they had gone their separate ways. Then, as it often does, fate intervened. Of course, they would later realize that it was more than just fate. Shortly after moving into their new home just outside of La Jolla, they told their neighbors that they were going to have a baby. They were excited and their neighbors were excited for them. Shortly after, Karl was born, they decided that California was no longer the place where they wanted to raise their son. Isaac left his job with the United States Consortium on Social Progress, after realizing that the place was never going to solve any problems and none of their recommendations would ever be implemented. In his Letter of Resignation, he told them that, “The entire work of the Consortium amounted to keeping a log book that no one would ever read, and that no one cared about it being maintained. As a result, I am going to go do something that might make a difference.” He found a job with an engineering firm in Greenville, South Carolina, that was working to make better battle vehicles for the Marine Corps. The company, Physperstech had already developed a new MRAP sized vehicle that could take a direct hit from an RPG-7G and keep going. It used an energy dispersion technology that was proprietary. The company hoped to be able to use this technology on something smaller, such as the newest HUMVEE style vehicles, or even aircraft, if they could get the power components further miniaturized. The company’s slogan was: Keeping our Patriots out of Harm’s way, when they are in Harm’s way. Isaac was working with reactive personal battle armor. He had already achieved a lightweight body armor that would take a 7.62 round from nearly any angle and reduce the force to the user by up to 80% with no penetration. It still stung like a son-of –a-gun, but you could keep fighting. About a month after arriving in South Carolina, Sarah found a new job with Sig Sauer. The former New Hampshire based company had moved to South Carolina, to be away from the liberal governments that hated guns and the gun industry. South Carolina had proven itself, in the late 1990’s, as a place for producing quality products in an environment that was high tech and thriving. The Northeast corridor had succumbed to the false teachings of Marx and Lenin. These teachings had completely destroyed this previously rich manufacturing sector of America. Because of their governmental overreach, excessive regulation and interference, nearly all manufacturers had left the northeastern states for warmer climes. The unemployment numbers from New Jersey to New Hampshire were depressing. More than half of the employable people could not find work, as there were no jobs to be had. The northeastern states all had more red ink than ever, and they continued to try to borrow from the United States Treasury to fund their Socialist programs.
Sarah loved her new job. As the Vice-President in charge of training and testing for Sig Sauer, she spent most of her time developing courses for the company and occasionally teaching a class or two, herself. She loved having a weapon in her hand and her job made sure that she got that opportunity often. Sig Sauer had first focused on tactical training for Law Enforcement groups, but Sarah explained to her executives from up North that, now that they were in the South, they had a completely untouched demographic. She began to develop classes for locals that the company supported originally, at cost. Her first class was called, “What is the best was to clean my pistol.” Some of the things she came upon while teaching that class horrified her. She had one guy who asked her, “Why do you say using Kerosene as a solvent is bad?” At first she thought he was joking and she almost laughed, but then she realized that he was serious. She went on to explain to him why this was bad for the weapon, hazardous to him and overall just dangerous. She was currently working on a couple of new weapon systems with the folks in R&D, and she hoped that one of them could be considered for the new main battle rifle to replace the M7; that was well past its prime.
The house that Sarah and Isaac found was a modest 2800 square foot ranch style home, with a basement. It also had an attached large shop and garage. Since both Sarah and Isaac enjoyed creative hobbies, the large shop area was the biggest selling feature for them. They were both awestruck at the size of the rooms in the house and the view they had of the mountains. They had also learned that the neighboring 19 acres of land was for sale. They were able to purchase the land and the house with the money they garnered from the sale of their tiny La Jolla place. Once they moved in and began exploring their new land, they discovered that their land was rich with natural assets. They found sign of elk, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, feral pigs, as well as coyotes. One day Isaac was sitting quietly on a hillside overlooking the bottom end of the brook that wound through the lower reaches of the property, when movement in the corner of his eye grabbed his attention. Because of his training, he did not move quickly, but slowly altered his focus. A solitary tawny shadow slipped across the opening and back into the undergrowth. It took him a second, to believe what he was seeing. When he got back to the house, he asked Sarah, “Guess what I just saw down at the east end of the property?”
“What?”
“A mountain lion!”
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
“Nope, guess we’ll need to be armed if we are out and about.”
“How is Karl doing today?”
“Oh, he was a little fussy after he ate, but he’s down for a nap right now.”
“How is that new class coming?”
“You know how it is, Isaac, you get part of the design right, then you encounter difficulties and have to reassess, and then move forward again.”
“Yeah, I know how that is, this migration from the MRAP to the smaller vehicles is presenting a lot of difficulties that we didn’t anticipate.”
“I’m just glad we left our old jobs and moved out here. You seem to be happy like we used to be when we were at the ATJ.”
“Me too! Your job with Sig seems to be agree with you too.”
“Oh, I just love it. Helping these people in this area become better gun owners is very rewarding.”
Isaac started into the kitchen and asked, “What do you want for dinner?”
“You’re cooking?”
“Yeah! If that’s okay?”
“That’s more than okay with me. I’m going to go check on our big boy. How about chicken and dumplings?”
“You really like Mrs. Earnhardt’s recipe, don’t you?”
“I know it’s not very good for me, but it is delicious.”
About then Isaac’s phone started to ring and he picked it up and in his usual curt voice said, “Engblom!”
As she walked away, Sarah heard his voice go up an octave and then she heard, “Really? Well sure, we’d love to catch up. Do you know how to get here? Yeah, that’s correct. Uh-huh, yeah, sounds like you have it all down. Where are you now? Oh, that close. I’ll set another plate, we’ll see you in a few minutes then.”
After she heard him hang up, she asked, “Who was that?”
“You’re not gonna believe it. It was Suzi Johnson.”
“Wow, what’s she doing in our neighborhood?”
“I’m not sure, but you can ask her when she arrives.”
“She’s coming by?”
“Yep.”
“When?”
“Probably in about thirty minutes, she said she was just leaving Table Rock on Highway 11.”
“What? You invited her over for tonight?”
“Yes, is that a problem?”
“Of course, it’s a problem. Look at this place.”
Isaac looked around and asked, “What’s the matter ?”
“Nothing’s wrong, I just have to react like a normal wife once in a while, so you won’t take me for granted.”
She smiled, as Isaac said, “You know you’re going to pay for that later. Right?”
“I’m counting on it!”
Thirty minutes later they heard gravel crunching under the tires of Suzi’s rental as she came up the driveway toward the house.
She walked up the steps to the front porch. As she was about to knock on...
