As the sun rises over Ember Falls, it spills its warm light across the cobbled streets, heralding the arrival of a perfect spring day. In a cozy corner of the city, Mixi Mindbender, a gnome of quick wit and boundless imagination, stirs from his slumber. A grin spreads across his face as he awakens with anticipation—today, he’s meeting his friends Jack and Max at the Toad Tavern for a hearty breakfast. With a burst of energy, Mixi scrambles around his quaint cottage, thoughts of the day’s feast dancing in his mind while he prepares to leave. What will his appetite crave this morning? No time to linger! He rushes out the door, a blur of movement.

Once outside, he slows, savoring the soft morning air. The tavern is only a block away, after all. With a casual wave of his hand, he locks the door behind him, the cottage’s heavy oak door snapping shut with a magical click. He strolls down the familiar street, greeting his neighbors with a cheerful nod and a few well-wishes.

Soon, he spots his friends waiting outside the inn. Jack’s voice rings out, full of exaggerated impatience: “Come on, Mixi! I’m starving already!” His laughter bounces off the stone walls.

Mixi chuckles and calls back, “Jack, my friend, no amount of food will ever fill that endless belly of yours!” With a grin, he quickens his pace, eager to join the company of his companions.

Max, ever the calm one, smiles warmly and reaches down with his left hand, offering a friendly pat on Mixi’s shoulder when the gnome approaches.

“Welcome!” Jack exclaims. “Glad you’re here. Let’s eat!”

With that, the three companions enter the Toad Tavern, their laughter and camaraderie spilling into the air as they prepare to feast on the delights the morning has to offer.

Hours slip by, and the three friends finally emerge from the inn, their bellies full after Jack’s insatiable appetite was thoroughly satisfied. As they step into the bustling streets, their eyes are drawn to the sight of large crowds gathering at the lower end of the south docks. Curiosity piqued, Max, Mixi, and Jack make their way through the growing throng, eager to discover the cause of the assembly.

Peering past the crowd, they spot a figure rising on a high wooden platform: Isaac Stormwind, the Duke of Ember Falls, and the city’s esteemed leader. The Duke stands tall, almost six feet, his distinguished features framed by salt-and-pepper hair and sharp blue eyes. His light skin is offset by the regal gold crown upon his head, a red cloak draping gracefully over his broad shoulders, and intricate armor glistening beneath the fabric, reflecting the wealth and power of his position.

Beside him stands a stout, older dwarf, his long white hair, and beard flowing with age. Standing just under four and a half feet tall, his piercing hazel eyes convey wisdom earned through years of service. His chainmail armor gleams beneath the white priest robes he wears, and in his right hand, he grips a massive Warhammer, the weapon’s intimidating weight evident even from a distance.

Flanking the dwarf is a tall half-elf, dressed in dark grey leather armor etched with intricate elven symbols of his faith. His violet eyes gleam with quiet confidence, his long silver hair tied neatly into a gold topknot. In his left hand, he holds a gleaming long spear, its tip catching the light of the rising sun. His presence is powerful, and his posture suggests a calm readiness for whatever might come.

The Duke raises a hand, silencing the crowd then he begins to speak, his voice booming across the docks. “My fellow citizens of Ember Falls! I have called this meeting to address an ungodly incident that took place right here, where Master Shoreman’s wife was abducted by an unknown force.” He pauses, his gaze sweeping over the crowd. “Today, I seek three brave volunteers to stand with these two fine souls.” He gestures to the figures at his side. “Raoh, The Righteous, a cleric of the Citadel, and his associate, Ahruzakul, an Inquisitor of the Clerical Faith.”

Suddenly, the crowd parts with a forceful push as a dwarf of considerable size steps forward, standing just shy of five feet tall. His chainmail armor clinks with every movement, and a square-shaped shield is strapped firmly to his back. His piercing green eyes, long red hair, and a braided beard lend him a fierce, unmistakable presence. With a roar of authority, he shoves through the throng, his massive battleaxe held high. “One side! One side! Let a dwarf through!” he bellows, his voice cutting through the murmur of the crowd.

He strides up the stairs to the platform, bows low before the Duke, and speaks with a deep, unwavering voice. “My lord, Jack Moonstone at your service. I offer my aid in finding the missing woman.” The Duke nods, his expression impassive. “Thank you for volunteering,” he replies.

Jack grins broadly, his excitement barely contained. “Oh! Almost forgot—I’ve got two other friends, Max and Mixi, who are eager to help!” he announces, his laughter carrying over the crowd. Max and Mixi exchange stunned glances, their names now thrust into the spotlight. Jack points them out, making their presence known in the sea of onlookers.

Max, a towering figure with striking features, steps forward. Standing over six feet tall, his blue eyes gleam with silent intensity. His dark hair, shoulder-length and unruly, seems to ripple with each purposeful stride. He is clad in black scale-mail armor that glistens like the hide of a dragon, and his spiked gauntlets make a sharp contrast against the sleek armor. Over his left shoulder, a massive two-handed great sword rests, its weight reflected in his steady gait. As he climbs the stairs toward the platform, his face is set in a grimace, his annoyance palpable.

When he reaches Jack, Max leans in, locking eyes with him. “What are you getting me into?” he growls, his voice low and dangerous. Jack, taken aback by the intensity of his friend’s gaze, stammers nervously, “I—I just wanted to help.” Max lets out a short, exasperated sigh but then smiles, his demeanor softening as he turns toward the Duke and gives a respectful bow.

But before the Duke can respond, a deep, booming voice erupts from the crowd, sending a ripple of tension through the onlookers. “I can’t let my friends go it alone!” The voice belongs to a giant, though the figure emerging from the crowd is anything but. A three-foot-tall gnome, wearing a deep blue hooded robe, pushes forward, his crystal blue eyes flashing beneath the shadow of his hood. Wild blue hair bursts from underneath, adding to his eccentric appearance. With a bound, he leaps effortlessly onto the stage, landing with a thud that sends the crowd into a hushed murmur.

He spins to face the crowd, raising his arms theatrically. “Greetings, all! Mixi Mindbender at your service!” The little gnome then turns to his companions behind him, his voice lowering to a whisper. “Just tell me one thing... where are we going?”

The Duke’s face brightens with admiration while Mixi, the final volunteer, steps forward, completing the search party. He nods to the group, his gaze steady. “Be sure to have all your priorities in order by tomorrow morning,” he commands. “That is when your journey will begin. If you need any provisions, let me know, and they will be provided. For now, I bid you all a good day.”

With a swift motion, the Duke signals to one of his knights, who steps forward to escort the party to a special guest keep—a lavish retreat reserved for important visitors from out of town, those staying for a few days or longer. There, the group will prepare, rest, and make final preparations for the journey ahead. Despite their earlier meeting at the docks, the companions take the time to properly introduce themselves, their voices filled with the weight of unspoken promises. As they exchange stories, their bonds strengthen, and a quiet trust begins to form, knowing they will rely on one another when the path grows perilous.

The morning arrives swiftly, and the air is thick with anticipation. Each member of the group performs a final check of their supplies, ensuring nothing essential is left behind. They gather their gear and make their way from the keep, the weight of their mission settling on their shoulders. While they walk the streets toward the Northern Gate, the people of Ember Falls line the streets, tossing flowers at their feet, wishing them good fortune and a safe return. The gesture fills the air with a bittersweet optimism.

When they approach the gate, the Duke comes into view, standing tall and dignified. He smiles warmly at the group and gestures to his knights, who immediately spring into action, unlocking the massive north gate with a great creak of iron and wood. Before they leave, the Duke motions for a figure to step forward—a man dressed in simple, weathered clothing. His face is lined with age and sorrow, his brown eyes heavy with grief. His dark hair is streaked with grey, and his pale skin betrays the weight of sleepless nights.

“This is Master Shoreman,” the Duke announces solemnly. “It is his wife who was taken, and he wishes to say a few words before you depart.”

Master Shoreman steps forward, his voice soft yet firm. “Thank you, my lord,” he says, before turning to face the party. His expression is etched with sorrow, and a tear slips down his left cheek. “You are all truly brave souls to take on this task. I cannot predict what you’ll face on your journey, but beyond the city...
