As cryptid creatures began invading the West Texas oil fields, feeding upon the unsuspecting workers who were unaware these creatures ever existed, they soon became the quarry of these horrific creatures; no one could imagine where the workers were. As these men went about their tasks on their night shifts in the patch or even returning to their quarters at the end of their shifts, they disappeared into the same thin air these creatures came from. The creatures would appear out of thin air, leaving nothing behind except a bloody skull and spine. These men went largely unnoticed since they had no families and lived alone in their work camp trailers until one day, the Captain and Jerry Lee were scouting around in their side-by-side ATV and came upon some remains.

Little did Ingrid, a striking blonde, blue-eyed beauty with very well-defined features, realize she would soon be dragged into the cryptid world to rule over these flesh-devouring creatures by an ancient spell being cast upon her.

Chapter I

Things grow strange in West Texas

Way West Texas is home to some of the absolute scariest creatures to walk the planet. Of course, nuclear testing from Nevada to the White Sands Test Site in New Mexico has spread radiation contamination that appears to have bred some of the scariest creatures ever. I have seen rattlesnakes so large they look like they could swallow a feral hog whole, insects so large that they look like their fangs are a foot long, tarantulas with bodies as big as basketballs, and wolves that stand over four feet tall at the shoulder. I have been told by the Navajo people that some of these animals can morph from typical-looking wolves to upright-walking creatures that look like a large man who thirsts for human flesh and blood.

One night, while sitting in my cabin overlooking the Pecos River, which is beautiful this time of year, Jerry Lee, my purebred German Shepherd, with stunning black and silver coloring and looks more like a wolf than a German Shepherd, started barking and became uncontrollably agitated. His hair was standing straight up on his neck, and he was snarling as I had never heard before. As I peered from my window, the night had gotten foggy, and the river was barely visible. I could hardly make out the dunes guarding the river. I suddenly recalled what I had read about the beliefs of the Navajo people. I heard a noise outside; again, I peered out my cabin window and saw the most unusual sight ever. The night was foggy, the mist was heavy and rolling in over the river like a blanket, and there were only about one hundred feet of visibility. Through the thick fog, I saw a haunting figure that may have been eight feet tall or more, and then, in the flash of an eye, it disappeared. But before it vanished, I was able to see that it had glowing yellow eyes. It made a sound that was the most blood-curdling, guttural howling roar that I had ever heard. As fast as it vanished, it reappeared a few feet from my porch, and I noticed that it was carrying something in its mouth. As the creature approached the cabin, it dropped what it had in its mouth, and it seemed to be investigating the cabin. As it stepped on the porch, I could hear its heavy footsteps on the wood with its long nails clicking on the wooden planks, clickity clack clickity clack, with every step. As it wandered off, it picked up what it had dropped and dragged it behind itself. It appeared to be a very mutilated human body.

The next day, I spoke to the oilfield workers and asked if they had seen anything strange the night before. The workers were hesitant to talk about the creatures; when I asked what they had seen, they were almost shaking so hard they couldn’t talk about it.

They claimed to have seen strange things, especially when they were up on the derrick. What looked like peculiar creatures could be seen wandering around in the pastures. They call them “Felino escalas” or sometimes “Lobo escalas,” two very different animals, although I have never seen a cougar with scales, let alone a wolf, for that matter, with the same features.

They did not tell us about these sightings because they believed they were ancient spirits and did not want to anger the spirits out of fear of retaliation. The oilfield crew members have lived in this area all their lives and have been taught about the Navajo people. They are very familiar with the beliefs and traditions of the Native Americans and fear their tribal customs. The workers feared that if they spoke about the creatures, the beast would learn of their tales about them and take the workers as they slept. The workers were keeping all that they witnessed a secret. Not only did they fear retribution from the creatures, but the workers felt that if they reported their sightings to local law enforcement, everything would eventually get back to the military. The workers knew that, if the military got involved, they would cause the cryptid creatures to destroy their tight-knit community. So, everything that had happened went without reporting.

It had been some time since Jerry Lee and I had seen this creature on our porch, when the local constabulary came by, inquiring about the whereabouts of one of the oilfield workers who had disappeared a week or so back.

Jerry Lee and I enjoy riding around in the side-by-side four-wheeler from time to time. Both of us are somewhat long in the tooth (we are old) and don’t walk the ranch anymore. We explore our ranch by way of my four-wheeler and keep an eye open for the neighbor’s ranch as well as our own. I like to look for prehistoric bones, and, of course, I find a lot. Until yesterday, I found a bloody human spine with all of the vertebrae and a skull, along with pieces of shredded clothing nearby. I knew without a doubt that we had encountered the missing oil field worker, but who would believe us?

I knew who I had found but wanted to let the Sheriff make that confirmation for me. Since all that was left to be seen was the shredded clothing and bloody bones, and not wanting to disturb what might be a crime scene, I marked the location with a pipeline flag, so we could find the correct location later. When the sheriff came to investigate, the spine and the flag marker were also gone. As Jerry Lee was performing his usual investigation, he got that nervous look again, with his hair standing up on his neck and his aggressive snarl, meaning he was smelling something out of the ordinary. I then suspected the missing oilfield worker was the creature's first meal.

It is pretty apparent that this appears to be a highly intelligent creature that has the capability of abstract thought processes. This thing displays logic and reasoning that I believe can only come from a creature that has superior brain power, because it appears to have intentionally destroyed the evidence of a brutal crime by removing the remnants of a grotesquely dismembered person, as well as disposing of the pipeline marker I used to guide the sheriff to the site for examination. I told our sheriff this action led me to believe that this thing had the mannerisms of a serial killer.

We both wondered how could there be such evil that would dismember a person to take its spinal cord; what could we do to dispatch such a creature?

As Jerry Lee and I were driving around one day soon after this incident, enjoying the wildflowers and cacti that the landscape had to offer, we saw a huge, silvery wolf. This thing did not display the typical skittishness that most wild animals do when startled by humans; it just stared us down with those spooky yellow eyes. This behavior seemed very odd and aggressive to me, so I thought it best to leave, since I didn’t have a proper defensive arsenal with me. It dawned on me, later that night, that I had seen those eyes before. I couldn’t bring myself to believe it was the same creature. It’s hard to discern the origin of this creature. An evil creature with the characteristics of a serial killer wouldn’t be an easy thing to kill. This also taught me never to go scouting around without my sidearm or my AR-15.

I felt this thing could have been spawned from radiation contamination, or, more than likely, an altogether more sinister bloodline. I have heard all the tales of the skin walkers’ and their abilities to morph into various creatures but never held much stock in such stories. I know animals are walking this planet we do not know of, but that doesn’t mean such creatures, cryptid or not, don’t exist.

Jerry Lee and I have been together for years and have seen some of the strangest things you could imagine. While we patrolled the jungles of Vietnam with our band of brothers, weird creatures and very unusual animals would often peek around trees, not long enough to identify them, but long enough to know that they were not animals of regular breeding. I often wondered if the chemicals we used in the war could have created these types of animals with the ability to appear very different from their ordinary beginnings, or, worse, mutations with bloodthirsty intentions. We sometimes would hear stories of the villages being attacked at night, and the following day, the villagers found mutilated bodies that were strewn about. We just chalked those stories up to “Charlie” getting even with the villagers for helping the Americans.

Jerry Lee goes with me everywhere; he is pretty popular with all the merchants in town, especially the ladies, and gets a lot of hugs, kisses, and treats. His favorite stores are the grocery store and the meat market; I told him he was going to have to slow down on the in-between snacks because his butt wasn’t going to fit through our cabin door. He just gave that, yeah, right look. Jerry Lee, a handsome fellow, a black and silver German Shepherd, who is very tall and still very sveltely built, is a real ladies' man. He is especially fond of Brit, who works in the back of the sporting goods store. She is a striking beauty of Navajo ancestry and is very well put together; she is a brunette with a light bronze cast to her long flowing hair set off by her amber eyes.

Brit sometimes puts her long hair in braids, which is traditional for her, and she is still very stunning. Ingrid is the cashier and a slightly tanned blonde with the body of someone who works out a lot. As far as Jerry Lee is concerned, she gives off vibes that he is suspicious of.

We went to town and stopped by the sporting goods store to say hello to Brit and get some game cameras; we planned to get some pics of the creature to...
