Chapter 1: An Unexpected Situation
Caleb’s P.O.V
The packhouse loomed ahead as I got out of the car and rushed toward it, carrying Aurora while Damien walked beside me with Caroline in his arms. We made it past the gates, handing my mate over to the waiting healers, just like I knew they would be at my father’s command.
Alpha Camden had a way of ensuring everything was in place before I could even ask, and this time, I was thankful for my father’s efficient ways. As we neared the doors, he stepped forward, his gaze hardening as he looked over both Aurora and Caroline, clearly assessing their condition before anything else.
"What happened, Caleb?" His tone was demanding but calm, a practiced combination that rarely failed to pull answers from anyone. "Where did you find them?"
I shook my head and quickly replied, "It was actually Damien who found Aurora, Dad. He’s the one you should be asking."
As the healers approached, I saw Damien’s hand linger on Caroline’s shoulder for a second longer than necessary before he finally let her go, stepping back, his expression unreadable.
Damien turned to look at me, his gaze sharp but understanding. I held my breath, hoping he’d catch the silent plea in my eyes—don't mention the mating bond, not now. Caroline wasn’t ready, and I wasn’t ready for the chaos it might bring. I could see the flicker of hesitation as he took in my expression, his eyes narrowing just a fraction. He gave a slight shake of his head, almost unnoticeable, but enough for me to know he understood. Relief washed over me, even though my heart was still racing.
My father’s brow lifted as he shifted his gaze to Damien, his eyes never leaving Caroline’s still form. The way he held her, so carefully and guarded, told me more than words ever could about the depth of his worry. I could feel my father’s impatience growing, though he tried to mask it, and after a beat of silence, he finally spoke again, this time directly addressing Damien.
"Damien," he said, his voice sharper, commanding attention, "explain what exactly happened out there."
Damien looked up, clearly gathering himself before answering, but there was a vulnerability in his eyes I wasn’t used to seeing.
"Alpha Camden," he started slowly. "I found Aurora near the entrance to the school gate…They, uh... Caleb and I had a bit of a disagreement,” Damien stated, his voice steady, keeping everything casual, like this was just another high school drama.
“Things got a little heated, and I stormed off the field. Needed some air, you know?” He shrugged, before clearing his throat. “I thought I’d wait in the parking lot, maybe catch the school bus back or call a cab. Figured I’d calm down on the way.”
He paused, his gaze shifting, and I knew he was remembering the strangeness of what he’d seen.
“When I got to the parking lot... It was weirdly quiet. Like, too quiet. And then... I saw Aurora.” His voice dropped a little, almost like he was afraid saying her name would make what he’d seen more real.
“She was standing by the school entrance, and she was talking to someone. I couldn't see who at first. But then...” He hesitated, eyes flicking from me to the others, measuring his words carefully. “The guy she was talking to—he just... fell. Just like that. Dropped to the ground as if he couldn’t stand any longer.”
The room was silent. I saw a couple of eyebrows raised, and I could tell that even though Damien wasn’t being overly dramatic, he had everyone’s attention. He kept going, his voice now tinged with something almost like fear. “Aurora... she started clutching her head all of a sudden, like she was in pain. And then... she started screaming. Panicking. It was like... like something out of a nightmare. I didn’t know what to do.”
I listened closely as Damien recounted the story, his voice shaking just a bit, though he tried to mask it with that usual calm demeanor he had perfected over the years.
“I rushed over to her, Caleb,” he said, his hands trembling slightly as he ran them through his hair, “to see what was wrong. And then, out of nowhere, she just... fell to the ground. Unmoving.”
I kept my gaze steady, nodding to encourage him to continue. “So, you tried to help her?” I asked, even though I knew the answer. Damien’s jaw clenched, his gaze flickering down, but he nodded.
“Yeah,” he replied. “I checked her pulse, and she wasn’t breathing. So I tried CPR, chest compressions, everything I could think of, but... nothing was working.” His voice dropped, frustration and sorrow blending together as he continued.
“I didn’t know what else to do, Caleb. I just kept going until you arrived, but she didn’t respond at all.” He glanced at me, a flash of desperation in his eyes, and that was when I found him there, kneeling beside her, hopelessly trying to bring her back and had mistaken him for trying to take advantage of her. “It was so strange. I’d never seen something like this…how could she just…stop breathing like that?”
My father nodded, absorbing Damien’s words as though piecing together a puzzle. "And you didn't see anyone else? Someone who might have done this to Aurora?" He asked. “Other than the man who fell to the ground?”
Damien hesitated, as if he was trying to remember every details through the haze of memory. "No, Alpha. It was just her… but there was something in the air, something wrong. It was like… like an energy, a heaviness. I’ve never felt anything like it before, so I can’t describe to you how it really felt…but I know I felt it…this presence."
I watched as my father processed this, his expression hardening further. "So, you’re saying there could be something, or someone, out there, just lurking?" He looked at me, his eyes narrowed, and for a second, I felt the weight of his unspoken worry – he hated uncertainties.
"Caleb, I want the perimeter doubled. No one leaves or enters without my approval until we get to the bottom of this. And you," he turned back to Damien, his tone softening ever so slightly, "you did well trying to save her. The healers will take it from here."
“Thank you, Alpha.” Damien managed a tight smile as he stepped away. And even though his expression was calm, I could tell that there was a storm raging inside of him. Because I felt it too, the storm, the concern for my Aurora.
Damien and I both waited outside the room while the healers worked on our mates. And my father didn’t look away from Damien, his gaze like a steel blade, sharp and unyielding. I had a feeling he already knew about Damien’s connection to Caroline, but thankfully, he didn’t say anything either.
‘What happened to Caroline?’ The question came through our mental bond, just like I expected it to.
‘She felt everything that Aurora did,’ I answered him. ‘I don’t know what’s happening, dad, but can we please keep this on the down low for the moment? At least until we figure out what this connection is between Aurora and Caroline.’
‘Fine.’ Came his curt mental voice. ‘But figure it out fast. Before Caroline’s parent’s get wind of the situation.’
“And what about the other man?” he asked out loud, his tone firm, unwavering. “What state was he in?”
I swallowed, knowing this part would hit harder. “It was Aurora’s father,” I replied, looking my father straight in the eye. “When I got there... he was already dead.”
I watched as Alpha Camden expression shifted, his brows furrowed in that familiar way he wore whenever a situation went sideways. The whole place seemed to be abuzz with a tense energy, one that spoke volumes of how my father was feeling about the sudden turn of events. Just then, one of the healers appeared before us, a soft but urgent look in her eyes as she addressed the Alpha.
“Alpha Camden,” she began, her voice low but filled with urgency. "The corpse that was found at the scene... It's at least three days old. And… well, the cause of death—it was starvation."
Her words were simple but hit hard, reverberating through each of us standing there. For a few moments, none of us spoke, as if we were still trying to absorb the information, the sheer horror of what we were hearing.
Three days old? A corpse…
That was just…insane!
Alpha Camden stopped mid-step and turned to her, his eyes narrowing as he processed her words. "Starvation? Three days old?” He shook his head, disbelief mingling with irritation. “How could that be possible? The corpse was found standing on its two legs, right in front of the school gates! Are you sure there wasn’t any sign of foul play? How can a corpse just…walk like that?”
My father asked the questions that had been running through everyone’s mind. Damien and I turned expectantly towards the healer, waiting for an explanation to this bizarre incident, even as my mind twisted with worry for Aurora.
The healer shook her head, glancing between Camden and me as if looking for reassurance. “No, Alpha. We checked for any signs of struggle, bruises, anything that would indicate that the corpse was transferred to the school— but there was nothing. He...
