The Preparation
It’s May 19, 2166, Our crew meets the Others to learn about their community, communication methods, and way of life. Everything seems similar to our lifestyle on Earth Prime. They have five fingers, one thumb, five toes, and one big toe. This fascinates us, similar yet so distinctly alien. Their government and education systems are like ours. As they share details of their plant-based diet and universal healthcare, we cannot help but marvel at the parallels in our own world. The Earth 2 atmosphere, with its reduced oxygen levels, poses a challenge. Until our bodies adjust, we will operate in an environment that tests both our resilience and preparation.
June 2, 2166: Isolation Begins
The thirty-day isolation period before launch marks the critical final stage of preparation. The mission protocols demand absolute adherence to ensure we are healthy and free from Earth Prime illnesses that could compromise the mission or disrupt the balance of Earth 2’s ecosystem. It’s also during this time that all vaccinations are administered, explicitly tailored to the conditions we will face in the Earth 2 atmosphere.
Isolation takes place in an advanced quarantine facility at the Space Center, equipped with innovative monitoring systems and medical equipment. Every aspect of our health is meticulously observed. Daily screenings check for infections, nutrient deficiencies, and physical or mental strain. The facility’s environment mimics Earth 2’s reduced oxygen levels, giving our bodies time to adjust to what will become our new normal.
Despite the clinical surroundings, the experience is not entirely sterile. The quarantine rooms maintain comfort and connectivity, allowing us to communicate and train together without breaking the isolation protocols.
We share meals through automated delivery systems, engage in group discussions via holographic projectors, and even collaborate on mission strategies, ensuring that the isolation period strengthens rather than fragments our unity as a crew.
June 15, 2166: Adjusting and Reflecting
By the halfway point, the isolation becomes as much of a psychological challenge as a physical one. The reduced oxygen environment has triggered subtle changes. Some have developed mild headaches and fatigue, while others have adapted more quickly, with their stamina improving with each passing day.
Amid the changes, reflection takes center stage. Rosalyn records messages for her daughter, ensuring she feels connected despite the distance. Elizabeth, driven by her father’s memory, practices advanced flight simulations to perfect her skills. Summer shares her insights about Earth 2’s meteorological patterns, inspired by her grandfather’s love for the stars.
Our discussions often veer into existential territory, raising questions about what it means to leave Earth Prime behind, whether the Others’ way of life holds lessons for humanity, and how the mission could change the trajectory of both worlds.
June 27, 2166: Countdown to Launch
The final days of isolation are marked by intense preparation. Vaccination protocols are completed, ensuring our immune systems are fortified against Earth 2’s pathogens. Our bodies, now acclimated to reduced oxygen, undergo rigorous tests to confirm our readiness for the journey.
As we pack for the mission, the reality of what lies ahead settles over us. The holographic final briefing from Major Ingram reinforces the stakes: “This isn’t just a scientific endeavor. It’s a bridge between worlds. You are the explorers of a connection that could shape the future of humanity and beyond.”
We emerge from isolation as a unified team, healthier, stronger, and prepared for the unknown. The launch day of July 2, 2166, is almost here and it awaits us like the dawn of a new era.
June 28, 2166, at 0800 hours, marks our final day of simulation drills before launch. We take our positions in the Peacemaker simulation room. Major Ingram starts the simulation drill. As the Peacemaker moves smoothly through the boundless reaches of space, an unexpected jolt rattles the vessel, causing the floor beneath us to quiver under the strain while warning sirens blare sharply, breaking the silence. The sirens blare, and the command center’s screens display a barrage of incoming hostile projectiles.
“All hands to your stations!” Skinner’s voice cuts through the blaring sirens. Her calm authority brings order to the frantic scene.
“Threat detected. Multiple hostiles bearing 45 degrees,” announces Harris as her fingers glide over the controls.
“Engage defensive systems,” orders Skinner, her eyes fixed on the tactical display.
“Activating photon shields and deploying decoy drones,” replies
Stanley. On her display screen, a series of holographic commands light up, and outside the Peacemaker, shimmering energy shields flare to life, enveloping the ship in a protective cocoon.
“Evasive maneuvers started,” Skinner reports as her hands deftly maneuver the spacecraft. The Peacemaker twists and spins with startling agility, narrowly evading the first barrage of fire.
“Wilson, coordinate internal and external security,” Skinner directs, turning to me.
“On it,” I responded. My voice was steady and composed. I tapped into the ship’s internal and external security systems and ensure that all bulkheads are sealed. “All sections report secure. Ready to handle any breaches.”
“Prepare to return fire,” said Skinner, nodding to Nixon, who was charging the ship’s weapons systems. “Laser turrets online,” Nixon said sharply. She tapped her console. “Targeting hostiles now.” Focusing on her display screen and selecting the closest threat with a tap, the Peacemaker’s laser turrets swiveled and locked onto the incoming attackers. Beams of focused laser light shot out, striking the hostile craft with pinpoint accuracy.
“Launching interceptor missiles,” added Monk. The hidden compartments along the Peacemaker’s hull opened, and missiles streaked through the portal, homing in on their targets with deadly precision.
“Status update,” Skinner demanded, watching the data feeds.
“Shields holding at 85 percent with minimal hull damage,” Stanley reported. “Enemy forces are retreating.”
We exchanged quick nods, unspoken trust binding us as we worked in sync to protect ourselves and the ship. Major Ingram turned to Dr. Banks, who was monitoring our vital signs throughout this simulated skirmish.
“Everyone holding up?” Major Ingram asked.
“There’s some heightened stress, but they’re doing alright,”
Dr. Banks said.
“Great work, everyone,” Major Ingram said, allowing a brief smile. “Let’s stay alert and be ready for anything.”
Though the simulation was over, the tension lingered. In two days, this would not be practice; it could be reality.
With our final practice complete, we had two days of much-needed relaxation. Though spacious and equipped with every modern convenience, the isolation quarters were more spacious than our quarters on the Peacemaker. While in isolation, each of us had our own bedroom, a spacious sitting area, and a well-equipped kitchen, though our meals were provided. The facilities featured an exercise room, laundry service, and a fully equipped computer lab.
However, our two days of relaxation were punctuated by briefings reinforcing the protocols for our peacekeeping mission. The mission was clear: we were here to seek knowledge, to learn, and to observe, not to impose Earth Prime’s ways on Earth 2. We were to respect their customs, integrate carefully with their worldviews, and avoid interference at all costs.
At the end of today’s briefing, Major Ingram called me into the conference room for a confidential security briefing. The atmosphere seemed heavy with tension, amplified by Major Ingram’s intense gaze and mirrored in the sharp reflections around us. His voice was steady but unyielding, cutting through the stillness with words that weighed heavily on my shoulders.
“Under no circumstances are you to allow threats from Earth 2 to reach Earth Prime.” “Do you understand the gravity of what I’m saying?” he asked.
“Yes, sir, I do,” I replied, my voice firm though my mind raced. The enormity of the task ahead was no longer theoretical; it was real.
His tone darkened slightly as he leaned forward. “We cannot allow any risk from Earth 2 to compromise Earth Prime under any circumstances. If something happens there, if things spiral out of control, then Earth Prime must remain safe at all costs.”
I nodded, the words settling like a stone in my chest. “Understood, sir. Earth Prime’s safety comes first.”
Major Ingram exhaled deeply, his expression still unreadable. “Correct,” he said, his voice steady.
“As a last resort, we have implemented an advanced quarantine protocol. In the event of a catastrophic failure of this mission, if the Others attack or any crew member compromises our mission, you may trigger an automatic dimensional lockdown. It will seal the portal completely, severing all ties between Earth Prime and Earth 2.”
His words hung...
