Run from the fire. Or become it.
CHAPTER TWO
Clara Obinna Akim
In the depths of my heart, I harbor an undeniable love for this man, a love that knows no bounds. Yet, as much as I long for his affection to mirror my own, I sense an inexplicable hesitation within him. It's as if something holds him back, keeping him from taking that leap of faith, from putting a ring on my finger and vowing eternal love. The truth came to light during one of our art-filled outings at the Nike Art Center in Lekki, when our conversation about relationships took an unexpected turn. He confessed his reluctance to trust females from the Igbo tribe, tainted by past heartbreaks and betrayals during his university days. I stood in disbelief, my heart sinking at the weight of his sweeping generalization. It's disheartening to witness how people resort to absurd assumptions, painting entire communities with a single brushstroke of judgment.
Yet, amidst his reservations, he found something captivating about me, something beyond his preconceived notions. He confessed to a flicker of hope, drawn to me in a way that defied his past traumas. Our connection, undeniable and electric, gave him reason to cling to our relationship, even as uncertainties clouded the horizon of our future. The fear of losing him to prejudice gnawed at my soul, propelling me to take matters into my own hands. I knew I deserved him just as much as he deserved me; a love as rare as ours shouldn't be tainted by baseless assumptions or ethnic sentiments.
The thought of losing him ignited a fierce resolve within me, pushing me to seize control of my own destiny. Clara Obinna Akim doesn't let fate dictate her life; she charts her own path, unyielding in her pursuit of what she desires. So, with determination in my heart and love as my guide, I contemplate a path I once deemed inconceivable.
The stories of love potions that bind men to their lovers, tales I once brushed aside as mere whimsy, now take on a new meaning. The depth of my love compels me to consider the unthinkable, to wield magic in a bid to secure the love we share. As I stand at this crossroads, I can't help but wonder if our love is strong enough to defy the odds, or if it's merely a mirage that will fade away like smoke with the passing of time.
In the sitting room, I wrapped my hands around his neck causing my tits to sink into his broad chest.
“Darling, I’m so horny and I’ll like you to fuck me tonight.”
He shrinks and releases himself from the hug, staring fixedly to ensure those words came from me. I bit my lips and smiled then rolled my eyes at him.
“I know I had insisted on a platonic relationship; but, ehhm you know say body no be firewood. I can’t hold back the urge of being laid. For that I am willing to let down my guard for you just for tonight; but it’s up to you to decide if you’re interested.”
Prince Onikosola’s dilated pupils and flushed cheeks sold him out as being nervous. I could bet his heart was pounding as he stared speechless. I’m sure I had felt his dick jerk as my thighs were inches closer to his groin when I had made the offer.
“Anyway, don’t bother coming back if you’re not interested in that,” I said and freed myself from the hug and turned to walk away when he held my hands and pulled me back to himself.
“I will not trade this night for anything in the world,” he replied.
As he lowered his head to kiss me, I placed my palm on his lips to stop him.
“Save it for tonight,” I whispered and he smiled. “If you are interested, come as soon as you are through at the palace, we must have dinner together before we consume ourselves with passion.”
“Yes Ma’am,” he replied with a salute and we chuckled.
As Prince Onikonsola dawdled out of the house to his car, he was about to step in when he stopped.
“Can you believe I almost forgot my Irukere,” he said as I stood at the walkway in akimbo watching him.
“Your Irukere,” I blurted in surprise, wondering if he had ever come in with such an item into my house.
“Yes. Don’t worry I’ll get it,” the Prince replied as he scooted back to the apartment being tailed by me. He moved to where he sat, looked around but couldn’t find the hand piece which he claimed was placed on the three-seater sofa about an hour ago.
“What’s the problem isn’t it there?” I asked, worried.
“No, it isn’t,” Prince Onikonsola replied as he looked around.
“Check the floor,” I suggested as I leaned on the door.
“But I kept it beside me not on the floor, besides it’s nowhere in this room,” Prince Onikonsola panicked, having searched around.
“I didn't see such an item. Are you sure you came in here with it?” I asked, concerned as I walked in to join the search.
“I did. It’s always with me, I had kept it beside me on this sofa,” Prince Onikonsola said in agitation.
“I don’t think you came in with an Irukere because I haven’t seen one since you came,” I protested being sure of my statement.
“O Clara, you're making me look stupid by questioning my consciousness. Please don’t say that again.”
“Okay, let’s search everywhere. Where else did you go? Did you use the guest toilet?”
“Clara,” Prince Onikonsola called in annoyance. “I have not left this sitting room since I entered this house.”

“But,” Clara paused, as if something had just dawned on her, “the Irukere of royals; they aren’t just traditional accessories, are they?”
“No, they aren’t. Why do you ask?” I replied, still searching.
“If the Irukere isn’t a mere accessory then it must contain mystical powers.”
“What’s your point?” I asked my host.
“My point is, since your Irukere possesses mystical powers, it’s possible it may have teleported back to the palace ahead of you.”
“Clara, please stop. Don’t give me that crap,” I snapped, then stormed out of her duplex.

I was confused. What exactly was going on? I hadn’t seen this guy enter the house with an Irukere. Was he carrying it and I somehow didn’t notice? If he really brought it, as he claims, then where is it now?
It’s been just the two of us here since evening. Could he be mistaken? I kept thinking as I searched the dining room, then moved to the kitchen, and finally checked the sitting room again.
Just then, Prince Onikonsola walked in, flanked by three royal guards. They were the ones from the red Mercedes W203 parked beside his maroon Porsche Macan.
“Clara,” the Prince called, “I’m sorry but we’ll have to search this house,” Prince Onikonsola said with a remorseful countenance.

“Search my house?” Clara exclaimed, clearly stunned by my decision.
“Babe, I’m sorry…” I stammered, but she waved me off, signaling that I shouldn’t bother apologizing.
“You’re free to search. Go ahead, no problem,” she said, her tone flat and weary as she folded her arms across her chest.
“Baby, please understand, I don’t mean any disrespect…”
“It’s fine,” she cut in. “Just do whatever you need to do. As long as we find the Irukere, that’s all that matters.”
Clara sauntered over to one of the sofas and sat down, silently watching as the guards began their search, starting from the sitting room and moving through the rest of the house. The Prince had instructed them to be thorough but not to ransack anything.
Thirty minutes later, the guards returned to the sitting room, where the Prince and I were seated.
“My Prince, we’ve searched every room; there’s nothing,” one of the guards reported.
“Then where the hell is my Irukere?” the Prince snapped.
“We’re sorry, my Prince,” Wale, the chief guard standing beside me, said. “Should we take her into custody?”
“On what grounds?” I fired back. “Did she confess to taking it? What in the name of our gods is going on? First, it was my Egbaowo, now it’s the Irukere!”
“My Prince,” Clara interjected calmly, “did you happen to doze off while you were here?”

The Prince sprang to his feet, as if struck by sudden revelation.
“How many doors in this house lead outside?” he asked.
“There are three,” I replied, pointing to the sitting room door. “This one, the kitchen door, and another in the lobby. Why?”
“I heard movement in the lobby while I was watching the documentary,” he said, his brows furrowed. “I didn’t think much of it. I assumed it was you. Besides, I was feeling drowsy at the time... I’m not sure if I actually dozed off. Could someone have entered this sitting room without your knowledge?”
“I’m not sure,” I answered, noting the worry in his eyes.
“Do you have any friends with unrestricted access to your house?” Prince Onikonsola asked.
I nodded.
“Yes, I have three flat mates; Ijeoma, Rhoda, and Iniobong. Ijeoma works as a marketer at Monumental Bank, so she wouldn’t be home at this hour; she usually returns late in the evening. Rhoda is a lawyer at a private firm and also closes late.
The only one who spends more time at home than the others is Iniobong; she’s an online content creator. But she went out with her fiancé a few hours ago, and I don’t expect her back until midnight, at the earliest.”
Do any of your neighbors have easy access to your house; someone who can...
