It's time for another school trip, and this year the Houghtow College of Magic has its sights set on the island nation of Hi Izuru, the so-called Land of the Rising Sun. Hi Izuru has recently begun to open its doors to the outside world, but this island nation isn't letting just anyone visit. Fortunately, Houghtow College of Magic has all the help it could ask for in the form of Flio and his household, whose past adventures and general omnipotence leave them perfectly positioned to help the ever-overworked administrator Taclyde and headmaster Nyt find their way through the red tape of Hi Izuran bureaucracy-not to mention the odd attack from rampaging clockwork monstrosities! Is this a job for the Wolf of Justice...?

“N-Now now, calm down, you two!” Flio said, doing his best to pacify the feuding demons. “I’m sorry about that, Greanyl. May I ask what brings you here?”

“Oh, yes!” said Greanyl, who had forgotten herself a little in the face of Rys and Uliminas’s display. She returned her focus to the task at hand and turned back towards Flio. “Mister Flio, I have a request to make of you, if I may be so bold...”

“A request?” Flio asked.

Greanyl nodded. “Myself and the other shadow demons are forever grateful for your generosity in welcoming us with open arms to the Fli-o’-Rys General Store after we took our leave of the Dark Army...” she said. “Recently, however, I’m afraid we have been finding ourselves short of hands...”

“Ah, I see...” Flio said with a knowing nod of his head, as if he already had an idea what Greanyl was about to ask.

Nearby, in the seat directly next to Uliminas, Ghozal gave a distinct “hrm” of agreement.

Ghozal—once the ruler of all demonkind under the name of Dark One Gholl, Ghozal abdicated the throne in favor of his younger brother Yuigarde and went off to live at Flio’s house. In his time there, he and Flio had become something along the lines of best friends. He later made wives of Uliminas and Balirossa, the human swordfighter and onetime knight of Klyrode. Between them he had two children, Folmina and Ghoro. More recently he had taken up responsibility for running the Fli-o’-Rys Adventurers’ Academy training grounds.

“You and your shadow demons are the backbone of the Fli-o’-Rys transportation team, and you’re also responsible for piloting our Enchanted Frigates...” Ghozal said. “And on top of that, you’ve been traveling all over collecting intelligence for the store. It’s no surprise at all to hear you’ve been wanting more hands for the work.”

“As you say, Lord Ghozal,” said Greanyl, lowering her head in a very reverential bow.

“I see...” Flio considered. “And recently we’ve been getting more and more requests for Enchanted Frigate flights to lands outside of the Magical Kingdom of Klyrode, increasing the number of flights per day. There are even some flights now that go too far abroad to make it back the same day...”

“Yes, we find ourselves needing more hands day by day,” Greanyl said. “And not only that, but now we also must monitor the activities of demons entering the kingdom in order to engage in banditry. Just this morning, in fact, there was a bandit attack in a region outside the scope of our intelligence. In the end you and Madame Rys were forced to take it upon yourselves to resolve the matter, much to our lasting shame...” She hung her head at the thought, her expression full of deep remorse for the failure.

“Oh, Greanyl, you don’t need to take it as hard as all that,” Rys said, favoring the shadow demon with a smile. “I happened to do a bit of scouting myself in my time in the Dark Army, you know! I certainly don’t mind doing my part.”

This time it was Uliminas’s turn to shoot a side-eyed glance towards the boastful grin on Rys’s face. “Meowr idea of scouting was to attack the meowment mew spotted the enemy,” she scoffed. “Gathering intelligence was only ever meowr second purriority.”

“Uliminas!” Rys said. “I’ll thank you not to tell lies about me right in front of my lord husband! I’ll have you know that I only did that sometimes.”

“Sometimes?!” Uliminas objected. “When mew went scouting, eight or nine times out of ten mew ended up wiping out the target instead! Mew hardly came back with anything like mewseful infurmation.”

“Th-That isn’t true at all! I did the mission properly one or two times out of ten at least!”

Suddenly the two were back on their feet, once again changing partway into beast form as they glared each other down.

“That’s enough, both of you!” Flio said, jumping out of his chair as well and placing one hand on each of their shoulders in a desperate attempt to restore some semblance of calm. “This discussion won’t get anywhere if you two keep interrupting like this!” He sighed. “Greanyl, I’m sorry we keep getting derailed. So...you’re here to find some way to deal with your personnel problems, is that correct?”

“Yes, Mister Flio, that is correct,” Greanyl replied.

“I thought I gave you the authority to recruit new members to your team, though, didn’t I?” Flio asked. “Is there some reason you can’t do that?”

“Yes, sir, you did... But for the Enchanted Frigates in particular, we need personnel with the ability to determine whether any suspicious individuals have sneaked in among the passengers. We shadow demons have natural abilities that lead us to excel at espionage, but we’re considered a rare demon species. I’ve called on every one of our number who I was able to summon, but it still comes to less than a hundred individuals in total.”

“Now that you mention it, I’d noticed you hadn’t been hiring any new shadow demons lately. That explains it, then...” Flio mused, nodding his head to Greanyl’s explanation. “But if you can’t find any new shadow demons to hire, doesn’t that put us at an impasse?”

“Not quite, I believe,” Greanyl said. “There is still one lead we could follow...”

“A lead?”

“Yes, sir. I am aware of a clan residing in the eastern land of Hi Izuru composed of people known as shinobi, who also specialize in stealth and espionage. I made contact with the shinobi of my acquaintance and was told they might be amenable to employment with the Fli-o’-Rys General Store, provided certain conditions are met.”

“Then that should solve your problem, right?” Flio smiled. “So? What are their conditions?”

“Well, sir... It seems we will have to travel to Hi Izura ourselves to visit a prominent shinobi, the head of the Uga family...” She took out a map she had apparently been keeping between her cleavage and spread it on the table for Flio to see. “This map should lead us to the Uga mansion.”

“Well, if you know where it is it should be easy, right?” said Flio.

“Why can’t we just invite these shinobi here, without all this hassle?” Rys asked.

“I’d certainly like to if we could,” Greanyl said, her expression darkening as she struggled to find the words to explain. “But... Well...”

“Hrm,” Ghozal said, folding his arms and closing his eyes for a moment in thought. “Most likely they want to see what their prospective employer Mister Flio is capable of for themselves. Hi Izuru is a land where the noble houses are always vying with each other for power, but from what I hear the shinobi make their way without swearing their allegiance to any house in particular. They change their employer with every job, doing what they have to to survive in a world of conflict.”

“Lord Ghozal is correct, I believe,” said Greanyl.

“But there’s something fishy about this story of us needing to come to them before they’re willing to come to us...” Ghozal continued, tracing the path from the Enchanted Frigate boarding tower to the Uga family stronghold on the map with this finger. “I’ve heard shinobi are skilled at building traps and hidden passages, in addition to their other abilities. I bet there’s some kind of trick waiting for us at this mansion...”

“Well, that’s no matter!” Rys said brightly, hopping out of her seat for yet a third time. “No matter what trap or trick they’ve prepared for us, your ever-trusty Rys will send them flying for the hills!”

“This is purrcisely meowt I’ve been saying!” Uliminas sniped, rolling her eyes in exasperation. “Why do mew always have to come out swinging from the furst possible meowment?”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Rys,” Flio said, somewhat more kindly. “In any event, I already have some business in Hi Izuru. Why don’t we stop by while we’re in the neighborhood? Let’s not worry about sending anyone flying for the hills for the time being, at least until we see what the situation is...”

“But my lord husband!” Rys said, jabbing at the air with her fists. “In these sorts of situations it’s best to teach them some manners straightaway...like this! Pow! Kapow!”

“Ha ha ha!” Ghozal laughed. “No small feat trying to calm Rys down when she gets like this, eh, Mister Flio?”

“Don’t laugh, Ghozal!” Flio pleaded, looking all the more distressed at his friend’s jovial attitude. “Help me try to get through to her!”

In short order, the scene in the Fli-o’-Rys living room had descended into lively chaos. Greanyl looked in distress from one person to another, seemingly unable to move. H-Help! she thought. I-I never know what I’m supposed to do in situations like this!

◇Houghtow City—Flio’s House◇

The next morning at breakfast, Flio explained the entire situation to the rest of the household. “And so,” he concluded, “it seems like we’ll be making a trip to Hi Izuru sometime in the near future.”

“Oh!” Before anyone else had a chance to respond, Rylnàsze popped up from her seat, raising her hand high. “Papa, may I go with you, please?” she asked, looking up at Flio with expectant delight all over her face.

“I-I don’t know, Rylnàsze...”...
