Chapter68:Next Move
Jax POV
I took my beautiful woman's hand and led her back to our bedroom. It was early in the morning now, but I knew she needed to rest more. I did too. I was truly afraid of what Liam would do. He had closed himself off to us before, but this was different.
I saw how he immediately wrote us off. I can't imagine the pain he feels knowing that we weren't fated, or that everything in his life was poisoned because he had Riley's Lycan attached to Maverick. I didn't even know how that worked.
I laid with Riley until I comforted her back sleep Liam was right that she run herself dry too much. I could feel herself getting weaker everyday.
I slowly moved out of bed, kissing her forehead, then got changed. Just a tshirt and jeans as I had no intentions of going to the office anytime soon.
I knocked on the office door feeling my nerves jumping inside me. I needed to talk to him, and I prayed he calmed down by now. "Come in." Liam said with a rough grunt.
"Can we talk?" I eyed Lindsey sitting in front of Liam's desk. He nodded for her to leave and I stood in front of the chair. Once the door was closed I relaxed some. I didn't like how he fell right back to that woman.
Liam looked like he aged ten years the past hour. His hair was silky black with these mysterious green eyes. His body ever, but tense and guarded.
"What do you want, Jax?" He said after I stood there silently for a moment.
"I don't care if you're truly my fated or not. You know it changes nothing."
"Doesn't it though? Once Riley takes her wolf back there will be no pull between us. You only tolerate me because of that pull and we both know it." He spoke monotone as he kept reading over papers on his desk. He perfected blocking out all his emotions years ago.
"I don't tolerate you, Liam." My hands rested on the desk to lean towards his face. "You know I love you. It's more than being fated, it's more than a pull. We have a real chance now."
He clenched his jaw as I spoke, but I saw he wasn't letting up. He was too afraid to give in and lose us. Not just by Demetrius now, but by fate. His eyes met mine and he spoke to me like an Alpha telling his Beta what was to happen next. No room for disagreement or disobedience in his tone. I was just his second in command and nothing else.
"We have a slim chance, one I'm not completely committed to either. Let Jeremiah finish his spells and we see if he can beat his brother. After that, we can reevaluate. For now, I need a more concert plan than telling Demetrius to fuck off. Claire will leave with the witch, tonight I will mark Lindsey, if Jeremiah fails and I have a daughter, then I will hide her from Demetrius."
I stood up straight with my hands behind my back. We are just an Alpha and Beta talking strategy. Liam wouldn't allow emotions to be attached to anything we said to each other. "Riley is pregnant with your daughter now. What about her, your child, and her wolf. What's the grand plan there." I held back my voice from cracking because I knew what he said next would push me too far.
"As it stands Riley won't survive childbirth. Maybe that is a blessing for her. We will work with Star, Freya, and Mildred to try and get her through it, but in the end, I don't feel she will come out ok. Knowing everything I do now, it honestly would be better for her.
My daughter will be claimed as dead then sent away. I don't care if we need to spell her to sleep hundreds of years so she wakes once Demetrius is dead. As far as Riley's Lycan that lives inside my wolf or whatever weird shit her father did, it is staying right where it is. I'm more powerful than she will ever be. I can protect my pack and children better than Riley can."
"So you hope for Riley to die, you'll hide any daughters you'll conceive by spelling them to sleep a hundred years, and you're keeping the Lycan inside your soul." I summarized what he said in disbelief. A part of me already knew he would have some half ass plan where he was still the Alpha of Alphas.
"I don't hope for her to die. I will always care about her, as I do you and my child. In order to survive I can't make foolish decisions about any of you. I also know that it is the Lycan inside me that makes me feel this way. It isn't real, Jax."
"It isn't real? You honestly think the love I have for you is only because of some spell."
"I know you have always been at my side. You are the only one I ever wanted, but I knew we could never be fully together. I won't sacrifice everything to get a good fuck every few days. You asked me to make a decision and stick to it. This is my decision, as your friend and as your Alpha, I'm telling you our plan for our pack. Hate me, hate my decision, but don't forget who is the Alpha."
"I do hate your decision. One day you're going to regret it too."
"I'll be alive to regret it though. We all will be and that is enough for me."
"Fine, Liam. I'll play the good Beta. Mark Lindsey tonight and shut us out completely. I won't ask anything from as your mate or lover. I won't ask anything at all from you."
"Good! We have enough to deal with then some stupid love triangle that will kill us all. What is the status with Danny's pack?" He so easily dismissed us then moved onto business.
"They are burning the dead tonight under the silver moon for protection. I'm taking Riley away for the night for our own ritual. With everything happening I'm willing to try anything. When we return, I want to move to Danny's pack to help them rebuild. We could all use a break from each other anyways. I personally don't want to see your new Luna marked and mated every morning." I spoke just as monotone as he did to me this time. There was no use to plead for his love anymore.
"Going to their pack house would give them a sense of protection. After one week we will have Lindsey's Luna ceremony and bring all them into our pack. Prepare them while you are there."
"Yes, Alpha. Anything else you need?"
"Not right now. Go prepare for tonight. Have Brandon take over the responsibilities of your offices for now, but we need to break them apart if Jeremiah fails. Start looking for humans that can take over. I would like the extra income, but not if it pisses off Demetrius. We need Danny's old pack in top strength for when he visits again too. Maybe Barry should take over as lead Delta over there with their survivors."
I nearly broke my molars at that request of his. Liam knew how much I loved my business, and how profitable they were for all the packs: Now wasn't the time to argue though. I knew he was sending away any one of us that made him feel guilty of his actions too: I had something else to prepare for that I couldn't worry about my business or Liam.
I turned to walk out, trying to let the anger simmer out. I wanted to be the loyal Beta until it was the right time to strike. It hurt too much though. I relentlessly loved Liam my whole life. He never returned that same love to me.
"If you mark Lindsey tonight, plan on finding a new Lead Beta. It's not a discussion, Liam. I will help my pack, but I won't be accepting any other than Riley as my Luna. You have a week until the ceremony."
He waved his hand at me to leave in annoyance. I knew a part of Liam didn't believe my words, but soon he will fully understand that I reached my limit. Loving someone can make you do stupid things for only long. I had a mate and child to think of now.
I went to my own office and started rearranging everything in my life. Riley gave me her dad's number and I decided I would bring him in on my plan. I needed help and I needed to keep Riley safe.
"Jeremiah, I was hoping we could speak a moment." I said as he answered the phone.
"Jerry is fine. I have a bit of a shit storm here so be quick."
"Everything ok?"
"Tell me why you called?" He growled, making me pray this wasn't a mistake.
Riley always spoke highly of her father, but I didn't see the same man as she did. I trusted my mate though, so I had to trust her father too.
"I think you are right about Liam. He isn't going to give Riley her wolf back. Can we do the spell without his willingness?"
"Yes, and I plan on it. It will leave him barely alive though. Are you willing to sacrifice your Alpha for your mate?" He asked with a scary ass tone. I knew my answer would determine if he let me live once this was all over.
"Of course I would. Riley is my fated, she is already marked and carrying our child too. You know she will come before anything else." "She is your fated, but that is a link between wolves. Her wolf is connected to Liam."
"It is and I still love him. I wouldn't sacrifice Riley for him though. That's why I wanted to be sure she can still get her wolf back without him."
"What is your plan?"
"Tonight we leave for the silver moon ritual. We thought she was human and hoped if I marked her tonight she would get my wolf. I told Liam we are still going to try this ritual, but I want to use it as a means to run. Riley needs to be hidden from both Demetrius and Liam. After she gives birth you can have her wolf restored."
"You would risk going to war with your Alpha?" He asked curiously.
"It won't be war. Liam will be pissed. Our relationship will never be the same, but I'm an Alpha in my own right. Once Demetrius is dead Riley and I will be Alpha and Luna of our own pack. Liam and Lindsey will be the alpha and Luna of this pack. We would permanently be separated."
"And what of my granddaughter? Liam is her father."
"She can live between our packs. I'll leave that for when the time is right to discuss. I don't agree with Liam, but I also know he...
