Book 2
Evangeline's voice trembled with both of sorrow and frustration as she spoke. Her words cut through the silence in the room. "You spoke to me so coldly," she began as her eyes finally met Klein's. "I drove all the way to you to apologize for being rude last night, only to find you hugging your 'ex.' Of course, I am hurt. You already know what happened to me, Klein. I do not wish to experience the same thing again because it hurts. It hurts to realize that the one you love does not love you the same way you do towards them."
Klein's expression softened, but he remained silent, letting her continue. Evangeline's arms sagged to her sides, her energy drained from the emotional storm brewing inside her. "We already have kids. I didn’t want to lose this chance of finally having my happiness. But if my desire for happiness would only lead me to get broken once more..."
She sighed deeply as the weight of her fears and insecurities pulled her down. "I can see your eyes looking at her ever so gently... It seems you really loved her so much way back... And it still lingers." A forced chuckle escaped her lips as she fought back the tears threatening to spill over. "Ah... You did mumble her name once when you were asleep."
Klein flinched at her words, his mind reeling in disbelief. 'I did?' he thought, trying to recall if it was true. The realization hit him like a punch to the gut, and he could see the pain etched in Evangeline's face.
"You want to help her out of the goodness of your heart, the way you offered help when you learned I was at rock bottom," she continued, her voice softening. "So yes, I am jealous. Because we started that way and I fear you would end up with her. I thought you were only mine." Her words were laced with vulnerability, a raw honesty that left Klein furrowing his brow, trying to make sense of the situation.
"So keep that ring," Evangeline said, her tone resigned as she took a step back. "Who knows? You might have a change of heart and decide you didn’t want me after all." The finality of her words hung in the air, leaving Klein standing there, trying to grasp with the reality of how much he had hurt the woman he claimed to love.
Chapter 58
Evangeline buried herself in work after her confrontation with Klein. She used it as a distraction from the emotional storm raging inside her. Her usually bright demeanor had faded and was replaced by a focused, almost mechanical professionalism. The day's tasks seemed endless, but Evangeline refused to let her personal issues seep into her work.
And so as evening approached, she finally left her office with her company driver taking her back to Klein's estate. When she arrived, the first sight that greeted her was Lydia waiting on the patio with the triplets in a stroller. The babies were awake, contentedly sucking on their binkies. A smile tugged at Evangeline's lips at the sight of her children, but Lydia’s troubled expression quickly caught her eye.
Evangeline approached Lydia with concern. "What’s wrong, Lydia?" she asked, her voice gentle but laced with worry.
Lydia hesitated but then pointed towards the front door. "There are two people inside, a man and a woman. They appear to be acquaintances of Sir Klein. He’s already inside."
Evangeline’s brow furrowed slightly. "I see. Thank you for letting me know. I’ll go greet them."
When Evangeline made her way to the door, she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling in her stomach. And when she finally walked into the living room, her gaze immediately settled on the scene before her. Klein was seated with Daphnie, who had her arm draped possessively around him. The sight of them together, so intimate, was a stab to her heart.
The man Evangeline hadn’t met before, stood up and greeted her with a warm smile. "Hi, I’m Theo. Max’s old college friend. You must be Evangeline. It’s an honor to finally meet you."
Evangeline offered a polite but halfhearted smile when her eyes flickered to Daphnie’s arm still entwined around Klein’s. But even so, she accepted his handshake. "Thank you, Theo. It’s nice to meet you as well."
She bit her lip, struggling to maintain her composure as the pain in her chest deepened.
Daphnie who noticed Evangeline’s discomfort, spoke with a condescending tone masked as casual conversation. "Aren’t you going to prepare something for your guests? Tsk, tsk. A good wife should always be considerate. Believe me, I know what it’s like. I’m a wife too."
The room fell silent as Lydia’s eyes widened in shock and Theo’s expression shifted to one of concern as he glanced between Daphnie and Evangeline, confused. His eyes then settled on Klein, who remained silent, offering no defense for Evangeline. And so he cleared his throat, trying to diffuse the tension. "Oh, well, we don’t really need snacks, do we?" He chuckled lightly, raising an eyebrow at Daphnie. "Why don’t you join us, Evangeline?"
But Evangeline shook her head, speaking in a calm yet firm tone. "No, thank you."
Lydia stepped forward, trying to smooth over the awkwardness. "Let me prepare some snacks and drinks for you all instead." She offered.
But Evangeline gave Lydia a pleading look. "No, Lydia. Let me handle it. Please."
With a reluctant nod, Lydia took the triplets to the nursery. Evangeline immmeditely moved towards the kitchen. And the moment she was out of sight, she collapsed against the counter, letting her back rest against the cool surface. With a shaky breath, she muttered to herself, "This is the last time… just this… this and you're done, Evangeline."
She took a moment to compose herself before pushing off from the counter and busied herself. She was trying to find some semblance of peace when Klein suddenly appeared, his presence breaking the fragile calm she had managed to maintain.
"I'm sorry about Daphnie's manners earlier," Klein said apologetically.
Evangeline looked at him with her face carefully blank, not wanting to betray any emotion.
You came here to apologize on her behalf?, she thought bitterly but held back from speaking. Instead, she turned her back to him, focusing on the task at hand, determined not to let her anger or hurt spill over. She knew that if she raised her voice, if she tried to explain how she felt, it would somehow turn into a situation where she would be the villain, the one ruining Klein and Daphnie's second chance at love.
Klein who sensed her distance, stepped closer as his voice softened with concern. "Evangeline, talk to me..."
He reached out, his hand gently touching her arm, but the sudden contact triggered something deep within her. Evangeline immediately flinched, violently shrugging away from him as a rush of memories—memories of Jeremy and the terror she had endured—flooded her mind. Her eyes widened, not in anger, but in pure, unfiltered fear. The expression on her face struck Klein like a physical blow.
Before he could say anything, Evangeline began gasping for breath. Her chest heaved as panic took hold, the room around her spinning as her mind unlocked memories she had buried deep. She stumbled backward, her hands trembling, and then, as if her body couldn’t support her anymore, she crumpled to the floor.
Klein’s heart pounded in his chest as he watched her collapse. "Evangeline..." he whispered, his voice thick with worry. He knelt down, trying to reach out, but before he could touch her, she recoiled, slapping his hand away.
"No! Don’t touch me!" she screamed, her voice raw with terror. Her eyes darted around wildly, as if searching for an escape. She was crying now, her body shaking as she hugged herself tightly, trying to make herself as small as possible, to disappear from the world around her.
Klein’s heart shattered at the sight of her like this—so broken, so vulnerable. "Evangeline, please..." he pleaded with his voice shaking, thinking her distress was because of him. But she was too far gone, too lost in the grip of her panic to hear him.
Suddenly, Evangeline bolted upright, her flight instinct kicking in. Without a word, she ran as her feet pounded against the floor as she fled the kitchen and headed straight upstairs.
"Evangeline!" Klein called after her, panic rising in his chest as he followed her. But she was too quick, her fear driving her to move faster than he could keep up. He reached the bottom of the staircase just as she disappeared around the corner at the top, leaving him standing there, helpless and afraid.
He hesitated for a moment, torn between wanting to give her space and the overwhelming need to comfort her. But the look of fear in her eyes, the way she had recoiled from his touch, echoed in his mind, paralyzing him. Klein knew she needed help, but he didn’t know how to reach her.
He sank to the floor, his head in his hands as he thought what he had done for her to react that way.
"Max, what happened?" Theo asked even though knowing exactly what had just happened, as he ran to him.
