Pearl Blanchard has learned the painful lesson that love often leads to heartbreak, especially after her unrequited love lingers in her heart. She decides to leave the past behind and focus on building her future, finding comfort in a new acquaintance, a successful and devout man who appears ideal for her. This new relationship offers an escape from the memories of her previous lover and the emotional turmoil that still haunts her. Pearl shifts her expectations, letting go of the dream of replicating her parents' perfect love story, and resolves to create her own unique path to love. Despite facing drama, humiliation, and moments of doubt, Pearl remains committed to shaping her own narrative with faith, resilience, and perseverance. The story explores themes of self-worth, forgiveness, and the challenges of accepting love amidst flaws and imperfections, all while trusting in God's guidance.

Chapter I:
Closure

“Mom, I messed up. I messed up bad.” Pearl’s words came out short and breathy. She stared at her phone, wishing the guilt eating her inside for the past couple of weeks would go away.

“What happened, baby?” her mom’s voice asked with concern on the other side of the line.

“I slept with him,” Pearl confessed, her voice cracking.

When Pearl arrived in Paris for a modeling convention a few days prior, she did not expect to be having this conversation. She stepped out of the plane dressed in a pink wool cardigan paired with pink heels and a professional attitude. She promised herself that this trip would be filled with nothing of her past but only a future where her modelling agency was known worldwide.

But some promises were made to be broken.

Now, Pearl sat in the middle of her hotel room on the beige Victorian-styled carpet and pulled her legs toward her body in misery.

“It all started in Canada.” Pearl wondered why she whispered even though she was the only one in the room, “I took a liking to him. Then one day we were alone. No kids, no siblings. That time it was different. That time…” an imaginary rope made its way around Pearl’s neck and her breath caught.

“Take your time,” Pearl’s mother advised. Her tone was gentle, but Pearl could tell she was not happy.

Pearl took a deep breath and told her about everything. The little kisses and sweet messages, the way Peter connected so quickly with the kids, the trip to Paris, the paintings they made together but never showed each other, the way he vanished at the end of it all. Pearl recounted the weakness she felt during that time period. How she wanted Peter so badly but also wanted him to stay away.

Then Pearl revealed to her how he appeared in her office one day. He came even though she’d told him to leave her alone dozens of times before. But the truth was she did not want to be alone, so she was baited like a fish. Only this time, she sank into the net deeper. Pearl spoke about the times they spent together, the dinners, going to church together, the Bible study sessions, going to the movies, or just going for a walk, and jokes they made. She talked about the abstinence they agreed to, their trip to Germany, Amber coming back to Peter’s life, the baby…

“Then he left again, but I still can’t stop thinking about him. He’s like a virus infecting my mind.” The whole time she spoke, not once did her mother interrupt her. After a few moments of silence, Pearl implored, “This is everything. Please say something, Mamma?

With a long sigh, her mother added, “I’m not pleased with the situation, but I’m glad you took precautions to avoid such sin taking control of you. God is not so ‘loving’ that He will overlook our sin. We all will reap the consequences for our sin.”

“Yes. I think I’m living that now, Mom,” replied Pearl in a broken tone.

“Pray a lot and ask God for His forgiveness and guidance,” recommended her mother.

“I’ve been doing that. That’s how I got the courage to tell you. But I don’t know how to stop thinking about him. It’s like he’s haunting me, every day, and every hour. I miss him so much and he doesn’t even…I mean he has a complete family now.” Pearl sighed, “How do I forget about him, Mom? I feel so humiliated.”

“It’s ok to have a mourning period. Let it make its way through. And then step out of it. Keep yourself busy with work, but also family and friends. Do anything that can keep you away from the things that remind you of him. Learn how to let go by letting God take the lead,” suggested her mother.

“Okay,” Pearl accepted her advice.

“Okay. I love you.”

“I love you too mom. Thank you.”

After Pearl arrived home, she contacted her church and signed up to volunteer at the nursery room twice a month in order to “keep herself busy” as her mother suggested.

Her mother checked on her progress every other day. “So how did your first day at the nursery go?”

“With all these babies crying at once, I don’t have a chance to think. They are little but very demanding,” said Pearl with a little laugh.

“Then that means the distraction is working.”

For the Martin Luther King Day long weekend, Pearl’s church hosted an indoor evangelical get-together. Many people from the community enjoyed the music, games, food, and raffles. Pearl was assigned to the infant nursery room and spent the day caring for babies along with an elderly woman, Mrs. Hoek. Close to eight at night, after the last child was picked up, Pearl cleaned up and locked the nursery door before dropping the key in the volunteer drop box.

As she walked through the lobby she was startled by an exclamation as a man lost control of his cup and she felt warm coffee seeping through her new blouse.

Oh no.” The man winced at Pearl. Pearl wrung out her blouse as the coffee burned her skin, “Oh no. I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you at all. How much is the shirt? I can…” The man fumbled for his wallet from his back pocket.

Pearl took a big breath and contained her frustration. She held up her hand to reject the money, walked past him, and made her way to her car without another word. That night, after a hot shower, Pearl bagged her Oktoberfest teddy bear. She stuffed the toy in the back of her closet, where she could not see. Pearl looked to the ceiling to keep tears from slipping out of her eyes. She breathed slowly and deeply before reaching for her Bible and meditating through a verse: Psalm 119:28, “My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.”

The next morning, Pearl dragged her tired body out of bed and went to church. Try as she might, as the service ended, she couldn’t stop thinking back to when Peter would accompany her to church. He would always walk ahead of me to avoid anyone bumping into me. Yet he never let go of my hand, Pearl thought to herself. She blinked away those dark memories and focused on leaving the pew when she heard a male voice ask, “How are you doing?”

Pearl turned around to face a well-dressed, Caucasian man of an average height. His eyes were a bright hazel, so bright that they clashed with his dark hair and black suit. He graced her with a smile. With a dry note, she replied, “I’m fine, thank you. How are you?”

“I’m fine as well,” he answered. As Pearl tried to place him, he continued, “I would like to properly apologize for the coffee spill last night. The soft light of the lobby doesn’t let people see much. If I had seen you, I would never…”

With a weak smile, Pearl retorted, “That was you. Well, no worries. It’s all good. Have a good day, sir.” She turned to walk away before he spoke again.

“I’m François Duvenche by the way. Can I treat you to a cup of coffee or…something?” He reached his right hand out to Pearl, and she turned back to face him. The type of man who believes he can seduce a woman with his charm. Ugh! Pearl thought to herself.

Frustrated, Pearl briefly shook his hand and replied, “Nice meeting you, Mr. Duvenche. And no, thank you. I don’t drink coffee. Goodbye.” Pearl whirled around and walked away.

That evening Pearl perched on the bar stool at her kitchen counter and called Elizabeth. She ate a forkful of her salad and voiced, “Happy almost one-month birthday to my number seventeen nephew!”

“Yeap! Almost four weeks old. It feels like just yesterday that we brought him home, and already he has filled our hearts with so much joy. He started lifting his head while on his stomach and turning it from side to side to follow me around the room. Such a character!”

“That must be a great experience.”

“You have no idea. It’s the most beautiful journey ever. Anyway, how are you? I haven’t heard from you in a while, except for some quick texts checking on me and the baby. And it’s been over a month since I saw you, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, that’s true. Almost five weeks,” Pearl admitted. “I’ve been so busy.”

“How are your conventions going, busy woman?” laughed Elizabeth.

“Okay so far. Actually, very good. Alejandra is my new manager now. On Friday we hired a new receptionist, a senior agent for my high-profile clients and a junior agent for new talent. They are starting on Tuesday, and I pray that things are more under control from now on.”

“Finally. After a whole year of struggling with only Alejandra, your background staff, and you, it’s about time. You will now have some time on your hands! When are you coming to see Nicholas?”

“Soon. Very soon. By the way, I love that picture of you, Jonathan, and Nicholas in snowman costumes you posted on your account.”

“Yeah. I saw your comment. Thank you. But trust me, sis, that little boy is always eating. I can barely...
