Pearl, a devout Christian, never expected her journey to her sister's wedding would begin with an accidental kiss-especially with a stranger. Overcome with embarrassment, she repeatedly apologizes, only to discover that the man, Peter, is also a wedding guest. As they spend time together, Pearl finds herself drawn to Peter's gentle spirit and captivating personality. However, an undeniable reality looms: Peter lives in Germany, and Pearl in the United States. Despite their growing bond, their brief time together is quickly overshadowed by the prospect of returning to their separate lives. Determined to move on, Pearl tries to forget Peter. But when he reappears in her life, her emotions reignite. With themes of faith, temptation, and trust, this heartwarming Christian romance asks: can love, rooted in faith and hope, endure the trials of distance and circumstance? Will Pearl and Peter's love story last beyond the short time they shared?
Chapter II:
Meeting Peter
On her way to her old bedroom, Pearl stopped to greet some of her brothers, sisters, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members, and family friends. After spending forty-five minutes in social agony, Pearl finally headed upstairs to see Elizabeth in her parents’ large bedroom. The room was majestic with a king bed on the east wall and high-top windows flooding it with natural light.
Elizabeth, in the cozy sitting area before the electric fireplace, was arranging her bridesmaid’s gifts in a large oval split-willow basket. Pearl watched her for a second and smiled at how much care she put into each gift.
“Hey, Lizzie.”
Elizabeth turned and jumped up to run to Pearl. Her arms encircled Pearl’s waist, and she laid her head on Pearl’s left shoulder.
They remained cuddled in each other’s arms for a good long time. “I’m so happy to see you, Pearly. I thought you’d ditched me.” Elizabeth pulled away from the hug and Pearl could see her distress.
“I would never do that! There was a lot going on, but I’m here now,” Pearl smiled in reassurance.
Elizabeth pushed Pearl to take a seat on the bed. She sat next to her sister and with confidence said, “Things are looking good. Jonathan’s brother, grandmother, and other family members should arrive today as well.”
“Wonderful,” replied Pearl as she sank exhausted into the familiar mattress of her childhood.
“Oh, let me show you some pictures of our honeymoon resort in Hawaii. It’s a gift from Jonathan’s brother. We’ll stay there for a whole month. Can you imagine? Look at that. This place is unbelievable,” exclaimed Elizabeth with sparkles in her eyes that prompted laughter from Pearl.
Elizabeth chattered for over an hour about her future honeymoon and excursions, the brand-new house in Shelburne, Vermont where they would live, and their future plans together. When Elizabeth finally allowed Pearl to leave, she exclaimed, “I know he is the one, Pearly. He is. I won’t find anyone else like him. I couldn’t even if I tried.”
“I’m so happy for you, Lizzie,” Pearl responded taking both of her sister’s hands.
With a smirk Elizabeth confessed, “Thank you for telling Mom and Dad about my plan to run away when I was a child. If you hadn’t, I would not have been able to understand love and enjoy all the beautiful things it has to offer.”
Pearl giggled, “Honestly, I’m pretty sure Mom and Dad had already figured it out even without my help. I was just doing my job as a big sister and godmother, which was helping you avoid stupid decisions.”
“I’ll ignore that insult and say that you’re a very wonderful big sister, godmother and soon-to-be maid of honor.”
With a smile, Pearl left Elizabeth to her marriage fantasies before venturing to her old, familiar bedroom. She cuddled into the queen-sized bed, enjoying the safe comfort of her childhood. Gazing across at the bay window, she recalled how often it had been a sleeping space for Gabo, Debbie, and Lizzie when they were younger.
Pearl’s mind retraced the night back to the face of the bearded stranger. She sighed and cupped her face into her hands.
“Oh, God! What did I do?” she berated herself.
Later that day, everyone gathered in the family ballroom for a buffet in honor of the future couple.
In a beige, backless mermaid evening gown adorned with sequins, Pearl made her way downstairs. Even though the event would take place in their own home, Elizabeth pushed for a glamorous dress code. Pearl’s golden high heels, which were briefly stolen from her mother’s closet, shone in the dim light of the room, along with her matching soiree clutch.
Just a few moments after she entered, Elizabeth hollered at Pearl from one of the tables on the right side of the room. Next to her was seated a well-dressed man holding a glass of champagne. As Pearl reached them, he noticed her and stood up to greet her with a simple hug. Elizabeth introduced them, “Pearly, this Jonathan Thompson. Jo, this is my sister Pearl-Esther Blanchard.”
“Finally, we meet,” added Pearl, giving Jonathan another hug. “Congrats,” continued Pearl to both.
“Thank you,” Jonathan replied. “I must admit, Lizzie speaks so much of you, I feel like I’ve known you forever.”
“Well, I hope she says good things about me,” Pearl snorted with a smile.
“Oh yes. Lizzie is extremely proud of her family,” Jonathan responded, grabbing Elizabeth’s hand, and depositing a kiss on her palm.
“So what do you do, Jonathan?” questioned Pearl.
“I’m in school part time for my biomedical engineering degree and I work part time at a laboratory in Vermont where we design artificial internal organs and replacements for body parts.”
“That must be very interesting,” replied Pearl in genuine admiration.
“Yes, it is. And it’s a great blessing that Lizzie and I were able to find our dream house so close, in Shelburne, Vermont.”
“It’s just two hours away from here. That way Mom won’t complain that I live too far away,” Lizzie sneaked a smirk in Pearl’s direction and added, “Like she does for you and Gabo.”
Pearl tilted her head backward and replied with sarcastic smile, “Don’t remind me.”
After about ten minutes of discussion and tipsy laughs, Jonathan looked at his phone with concern and excused himself, “I have to take that, Lizzie. It’s Peter. He might be outside. I’ll be right back.” And to Pearl he added with a charming smile, “We’ll talk more, sis.”
“Ok. Sure,” agreed Pearl with eyebrows raised at his use of ‘sis’ when they had only just met.
As soon as Jonathan moved away, Elizabeth bombarded Pearl with questions, “So? What do you think? Isn’t he sweet? Extremely handsome?”
Elizabeth looked at Pearl expectantly. Her smile grew and her eyes lit up as Pearl answered, “Well, he’s very charming and polite. His hair is gorgeous and he’s good-looking. But his light-brown eyes… they give me a strong sense of déjà vu, you know. Like I’ve seen him before or something.”
“Oh, probably one of your clients,” Elizabeth suggested.
“Yeah, maybe,” answered Pearl with a concerned face.
“Anyway. Wish me luck because the day after tomorrow, I will say ‘yes’ to the one and only man who is worthy of calling me ‘wife,’” giggled Elizabeth.
“You know the Blanchard family doesn’t run on luck but on blessings,” laughed Pearl.
A few minutes later, Jonathan returned and stole his future wife away to the dance floor.
Pearl reflected on her demanding job. She never had time to date, but as each sibling got married, she slowly realized it wasn’t really her career’s fault: it was hers. She never left time for herself to meet someone she could relate to, someone she could call hers, someone she could love. The reality of the situation hit too late.
Pearl huddled herself into a little corner she knew was a blind spot for most of the people on the dance floor. She especially hid from the relatives who bombarded her with questions like, “When will you get married?” or attempted to introduce her to a partner.
Pearl used the few moments of peace she had to catch up on her other siblings’ social media pages before her phone was snatched away from her hand. Looking up, she saw her Uncle Matthew and forced a smile on her face. She knew what was in store for her.
Uncle Matthew often had the nickname “Stupid’s Cupid” in the family as he was always trying to pair people together but was never successful.
“Pearly, I’m so glad I found you. I think I have someone you’d love to meet.”
Not wanting to be disrespectful, Pearl nodded and let him lead the way to her most uncomfortable moment of the night. The man, who looked about twice Pearl’s age, eagerly introduced himself as Albert Sawndip. He was a bold, chubby man who stood about five feet tall.
Pearl quickly realized that Albert Sawndip wasn’t the humblest man. “I have the stock market in my favor,” he immediately boasted. “I am very ambitious: that is why I can make it that big. My business is booming; I live in a very high-class neighborhood, and my living room alone is about the size of that ballroom. Best of all, I am currently driving one of the most expensive cars on the market. Your uncle said you are in the modeling business. How does that work for you? Do you even make money in such business?”
“Well…” started Pearl.
“Whatever you are making in a year, I am pretty sure my business tops that in a week. What kind of car did you drive to come here?”
“I took the train.”
“The train!” Albert answered, his eyes squinted shut in horror. “You are still using public transportation? You must really not make much. But you know, if you are looking for a boyfriend or just a friend, I can easily give you a hand here and there.”
The discomfort on her face, she hoped, was obvious enough, but Albert would not let up. He grabbed Pearl’s hand and asked, “Would you like to dance with me?”
Just as Pearl was looking for a way to kindly reject the offer, her eyes caught sight of a tall, imposing man. And luckily for her, he was looking in her direction.
As he walked toward them, her eyes...
