It didn’t even hurt. It was hard to describe, but it felt like her finger had phased through my skin and she was directly fiddling with my internal organs. It was a very peculiar feeling, to say the least.
In that moment, I’d failed to realize just how dire my situation actually was. I should have known that this was no time for thoughtful reflection.
“Umm... Your fallen angel heart is...right here. Here we go... Boop! ♪”
“Huh? Huh... Huh—Aaah... Aaaaaaaaaaaah?! B-Bweeeeeeeeeh?!”
An overwhelming surge of power erupted from deep within me. What is this?! It’s just like that summer night!
Wings—black fallen-angel wings—unfurled from my back.
“Gwaaaaaaaaah?!”
“L-Liz?!”
“Hey?! Y-You okay?!”
By the time I realized that Lilith had forcibly unleashed my fallen angel powers, my sanity was already slipping away. A violent torrent of power threatened to overtake my mind in an instant. There didn’t seem to be any way to keep this overflowing power from spilling out. With one quick and casual motion from Lilith, I was sent on a full-on rampage.
“Errgh-eeeeeeeeeh!”
Columns of holy and hell magic burst forth from my body—exactly like that day at the sea.
“Wah?!”
“E-Everyone fall back! On your guard!”
Thanks to the distance they’d kept in advance, the hero party swiftly retreated beyond the range of my magic, readying their weapons as they did so.
“Right now, you see, Lizzy? I went and disabled your reflexes and self-imposed seals. Just a little poke at the fallen angel’s heart, and voila! You can use your powers again! ♪”
“I didn’t need you spelling it ooouuut! Bleeeeeeeeegh!”
Lilith explained everything with a carefree smile; I would have really appreciated getting that explanation beforehand! Shouldn’t I have the right to ready myself?! Steady my heart?! Couldn’t we have given Cain and the others time to put more distance between us?! There were all sorts of things we could have done!
Incidentally, Lilith was still right beside me, having not backed off a single step. Even as she was bathed in my rampaging holy and hell magic, she didn’t flinch, didn’t defend, and emerged without a scratch.
I should have expected as much from a celestial powerhouse. Her strength is in an entirely different dimension than ours.
“Liz! Are you okay?! Can you hear me?!”
“Y-Yes, just barely... Angyaaaaaaaaah!”
Unlike that day by the sea, I’d managed to maintain a sliver of reason this time around. I couldn’t control my fallen angel powers at all; I was teetering on the edge of total rampage, and if I let my guard down for even an instant, I knew that last shred of awareness would be utterly obliterated.
But that faint remnant of consciousness was the one thing I refused to let slip away. The moment it vanished, it would be nothing but a repeat of that night. That was something I could never let come to pass. Never. And so I clung desperately to the fragile lifeline of my remaining sanity.
“Okay, Lizzy! Now, let’s work on controlling your power. Keep your mind steady, and we’ll start with some simple techniques. We’ll combine Holy Laser and Hell Laser into the combination spell, Twilight Laser!”
“Hey?! Now’s not the... Gwoooooooooh?!”
Even in my current state, I knew Lilith was throwing out an unreasonable demand. I was barely holding on to my mind as it was. A storm of power was raging within me, and she wanted me to, what...unleash a Twilight Laser?
There was just no way!
“St-Stop... C-Calm down. Pheeeeeew. Haaaaaaaaah... Heeeeeeeee...”
First, I needed to suppress the towering columns of holy and hell magic. We wouldn’t get anywhere unless I could manage that. Still overwhelmed by my rampaging powers, I took a number of deep breaths in an attempt to regain some semblance of composure.
Only after I did that could I say I had taken my first step. Well, it was more like a half-step. I clenched my teeth hard as I fought to suppress the fallen angel’s power.
“No, no, that’s not it, Lizzy. You’re not supposed to suppress it, you’re supposed to use it.”
“Huh?”
And with that, Lilith once again jabbed her pointer finger into my chest. I could feel an even greater power surging from my fallen angel’s heart.
“Ubwaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaah!”
“Liiiiiiiiiz!!!”
Lilith was a monster—a devil. No, really.
So, this was what it meant to be truly merciless. Just when I was finally starting to quell my power, just when I had already been pushed to my absolute limit, she’d gone and forcibly unleashed even more power from me.
Don’t tell me she’s just using training as a pretense to kill me? I mean, right now, I can feel this power shredding me from the inside. I’m inching closer and closer to death.
“Ubwaaaaaaaaah! Bwaaaaaaaaah!”
I thrashed around the training grounds, flailing about while columns of power shot from me. If not for the powerful barrier concealing everything that happened here, the entirety of Academy Town would have been thrown into chaos over my breakdown.
On that note, Lilith had actually reinforced the barrier herself. My holy and hell magic would have easily torn through the original one.
“Obwaaaaaaaaah! Urrrrrrgh... Guh!”
“D-Do your best, Liz. Don’t lose to yourself.”
“Y-You’ve got this, Liz! I know you can do it... Probably.”
My comrades tried to lend me strength with their words, albeit with strained looks on their faces... To be honest, I didn’t need any more strength at the moment. If anything, I wanted to get rid of it.
“Aaaaaarrrgh... Ooohhh... Gwooooooooo!”
“You can do it, Lizzy! Go, go, goooo!”
Lilith’s encouragement reached me too, but at this point, her voice was doing nothing but infuriating me.
Which brings us back to the present moment.
Umm, what was it again? Twilight Laser? She said I had to combine a basic Holy Laser and Hell Laser...
“Urgh... Grrr... Agh ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga!”
With my eyes half-rolled back, I desperately clung to my consciousness and tried to tackle the challenge presented to me. She called it a combination spell, so I probably needed to mix the white and black pillars together...
I tried pulling the rampaging pillars of holy and hell magic closer, attempting to merge the two. I pressed two pillars together, twisting and winding them, testing to see if there was any way to present two opposing forces as one.
But then, Lilith offered some guidance.
“Ohh... No, no, you’re misunderstanding something, dear. Twilight Laser requires Holy Laser and Hell Laser. Those magical columns are just masses of mana leaking out of you. They aren’t the spells we’re looking for.”
“Gah?!”
Hearing that, I fell into despair.
What? What’s that supposed to mean? These magic pillars aren’t Holy Laser or Hell Laser at all? Meaning...what? While I’m barely holding on to my consciousness, I’m supposed to spontaneously learn two spells I’ve never used or even seen before and combine them into something else?
“Augh...”
The sheer difficulty of the task hit me like a ton of bricks, leaving me momentarily dazed. And that daze was my downfall. The fragile thread of consciousness I’d been clinging to finally snapped, blown away by my lapse in focus.
I fell into a total rampage.
I couldn’t remember the few seconds that transpired after I lost consciousness. The storm of power within me obliterated my sense of self. But the next thing I heard was Lilith’s voice.
“Ah, that’s a big no-no, Lizzy. You can’t go losing consciousness like thaaat. Bad girl! You hear me? Bad girl!”
“Bwah?!”
Her voice was quickly followed by a sharp impact on my cheek. She had probably slapped me; the pain snapped me back to my senses. I’d most likely been out for only a few seconds at most. I’d come back thanks to Lilith... Or, well, ‘come back’ was a bit of an overstatement. I was still half-rampaging!
“Okay, now let’s try that one more time! We’ll start with a nice and simple Twilight Laser!”
“Gwooooooooo-oooooooooh! Monster! Devil!”
“Oh, so close. I’m a fallen angel! ♪” she replied, with a sweet, innocent smile. That smile was as pure as an angel’s—so beautiful, it was almost blinding.
“Gwoooaaaaaaaaah!”
“What kind of devilish training is this?” Cain muttered.
I could see him and his comrades shuddering in the corner of my field of view. They themselves had imposed a ridiculous, devilish training on me—training that went by the name of “Anyone Can Do It! Hero-Style Boot Camp”—and even they were struggling to come to terms with what was happening in front of them.
Looking back, though, it made sense. My current training was dozens of times harder than the boot camp. The camp had been hellish, but at least it hadn’t been life-threatening. This training, on the other hand, was actively trying to...
