Chapter 1:
Brooklyn to Queens
Fredro Starr is sitting inside a barbershop podcast studio in Harlem about to start an interview.
At the same time the Jam Master Jay Trail is about to read the verdict to his trail, The defendants are found guilty of the murder, Fredro shakes his head “Good for those motherfucker’s, I hope they die in jail” The interview starts, the interviewer asked his his 1st question “We just heard the verdict for the Jam Master Case, how do you feel about it?” Fredro is quick to respond “That’s fucked up, the guys that killed Jay was sleeping on Jay’s couch, those bums are finally getting what they deserve, but that still does not bring Jay Back” the Interviewer asked another question “Onyx has been doing this for over 30 years, tell me how did it all start?” Fredro takes a pause and a deep breath “It all started on Ocean Avenue, Brooklyn” Freddy and Kirk are in Kirk’s bedroom while Freddy’s mother Mary and Kirk’s mother Harriet are smoking cigarettes playing Spades in the living room. Their mothers are sisters which makes Freddy and Kirk 1st cousins. Freddy is two years older than Kirk. They manage to take a few sips of beer when their mothers are not looking. Feeling a little tipsy Freddy decides to take a nap on Kirk’s bed. Kirk takes a book of matches off the coffee table and decides to go under the bed and start playing with the matches, the next thing you know, the mattress sets on fire and smoke is everywhere, Kirk yells out “Fire, Fire” Freddy wakes up and jumps out the bed. Mary and Harriet run in the room with a bucket filled with water and throw it on the fire to put it out. Everybody looks at Kirk. Freddy was 10 years, and kirk was 8 years old at this time. Freddy lived with his mother Mary and older sister Nicole on East 18th street in a two-bedroom apartment in Flatbush. They were poor, food stamps, welfare the whole nine, but Freddy had a sense of pride, he would wait until everyone left the store before he pulled out the food stamps. One Christmas Mary did not have enough money for a Christmas tree, the man selling the trees asked if Freddy and his older cousin Charlie could brake dance, Freddy and charlie started bust-in out moves, the man give them the tree for free. I guess, He loved the show. Freddy would sometimes sleepwalk, one time he walked out the building at 3AM in the morning in his under wear, luckily the door man saw him, woke him up, and brought him back to his apartment. His mother did not even know he left. Freddy and Nikki were both good artist, Nikki was into fashion and Freddy was into comics. Freddy had asthma, he would have asthma attacks sometimes and lose his breath, but that did not stop Freddy from being highly active. One time Freddy played the Lion in the wizard of OZ in his elementary school PS 136 school play. When the Lion came out, he made a big roar, and the audience went wild. Freddy stole the show. Growing up in Brooklyn Freddy and Kirk had to learn fast and be street smart. They both lived in Flatbush 5 mins from each other. Growing up with out father figures, these two had to figure it out at an early age. Freddy’s father lived in Queens; Kirk’s father lived in the Bronx. They were both raised by their mothers. Mary was only 19 years old when she had Freddy, she was still enjoying her life being a young mother, she went to clubs with Harriet, and it seems like every night, Every Sunday morning Mary would play music and clean the house, she would play records from Denice Williams, Angela Bo Field, Barry White, Rick James just to name a few, Mary takes out a bag of weed and rolls a joint on the “Beat it” double album cover, by Micheal Jackson; Freddy was right there always under her. One time Freddy was in the bathroom and saw a McDonald’s straw cut in half with white powder residue. Even thou he was young; he knew what it was. Mary dated a lot, different men would come over and Mary would take them in her bedroom and lock the door, but that did not stop Freddy from hearing his mother having sex. That is when Freddy would hit the streets. One guy Mary met was a famous Singer from the R&B group BT Express, this is first time Freddy met someone that had his face on an album cover, but Mr BT Express was not sticking around long enough to be a stepfather. One day the radio station played a song called “The Breaks” by Kurtis Blow, at that moment Freddy fell in love with hip hip. Soon after that Mary came home with a record by Sugar Hill Gang. That record changed Freddy’s life forever, the record cover was light blue with a colorful candy cane, Freddy memorized every word on that record, he played it over and over. Mary was a single mother trying her best to raise 2 kids, one time for Freddy’s birthday she bought him a baseball glove, Freddy loved baseball Reggie Jackson was his favorite player. When Freddy opened the birthday day, he tried to put on the baseball glove, it was for a left-handed player, Freddy was right-handed, Mary made a mistake a bought the wrong glove, Mary was upset. She grabbed Freddy and Nikki by the hand and stormed out of the apartment, she returned to the store where she bought the glove, and demanded a refund, she started getting very load but the Asian man working there was not having it. He grabbed Mary and put her in a choke hold. Freddy jumps in with quickness and starts throwing punches. The Asian man lets go of Mary and starts to scream, “get out my store” Freddy kept the glove and learned how to throw with his left hand. Their father Fred senior nick name Snake would come by on the weekends sometimes to pick up Freddy and Nikki in his Red Duster and take them to Queens. Queens was a better way of living. There were houses in Queens not like Brooklyn where it seemed like there were only buildings to live in. Freddy’s father and mother eventually got back together for the sake of the kids, they all moved to Queens. After about one year living in Queens, Freddy’s mother Mary had to leave the house because she was going out late at night and getting high. Freddy’s father Snake found out and put his foot down and she had to go. Mary fought for the kids in court with a custody battle against Fred Senior, when the judge asked Freddy and Nikki who they would like to live with, even thou Freddy was a Mama’s boy, He and Nikki decided to live with their father in Queens, while their mother got her life back in order. Freddy was making a name for himself in the neighborhood, he was exceptionally good at football, He played running back for The Lyn Vets Cardinals and scored nine touch downs for the season. He met a kid on the next block named Marlon, they both loved hip hop, they would spend time together everyday and listen to Mr Magic hip hop show or Red Alert hip hop show on the radio. A drunk guy from the neighborhood named Smitty kept calling Freddy, Fredro, Freddy hated that name, but the nick name stuck, everybody in the hood started calling Freddy, Fredro. That is how he got the name. One day on the block Fredro, Marlon and a few other kids on the block decided to have a rap battle for fun. Fredro and Marlon never wrote a rhyme before this was their first time. That day Marlon came up with his rap name DS The Cool, Fredro added Cool to his name. From that day it was Cool Fredro and DS The Cool, after that rap battle, they really got into hip hop, everyday writing rhymes, free styling, break dancing. They loved it. Fredro and Big DS would hang out on the block with the 135th crew, they called themselves the X Men based on the comic book, just young kids having fun. Fredro pretended to be Nightcrawler and DS pretended to be Colossus. Every Saturday all the kids would watch Karate movies at 3pm and come outside at 4pm and practice karate fighting in the street. Fredro was not the biggest, strongest kid but he looked up to the martial artist master Bruce Lee for inspiration. Bruce Lee was a small guy, but he was extraordinarily strong and could kick ass. Enter the Dragon was Fredro’s favorite Bruce Lee movie. Living with their father in Queens, Fredro and Nikki got to see more of their family from their father’s side. In the summer Fred senior would drive to Alabama to see his mother Louise Scruggs and Robert Scruggs, his father. Fredro and Nikki’s grand parents. Snake would drink and drive the whole trip down I 9 5 interstate, and Fredro was his personal bartender. “Hey boy pour me another drink” One trip to Alabama, Snake got arrested for drinking and driving, Fredro and Nikki went to the police station in South Carolina, the police was so nice to give them ice cream before Fredro and Niki went to sleep in a foster care for the night until Fred senior was released the next day. When they arrived in Alabama, Freddy and Nikki were greeted by all their cousins. They would also go to Long Island to see their cousins Morris, Pinky, Gerald, and Anita. Gerald was always playing, fighting with Fredro making him tough, even thou Gerald was bigger, Fredro did not back down. They would also go to Brownsville to see their cousins Wendel and Janice. Brownsville was the ghetto for real, there was only two buildings left standing on Wendel’s block, the rest of the buildings were just rubble. It looked like a war zone. This is where Fredro first started smoking weed, hanging out with Wendel’s friend Ron Du. One day Fredro and Ron Du are hanging out in the hallway staircase in Wendel’s Building. Ron Du lights up a blunt as Fredro looks on. He blows out the smoke and hands the blunt to Fredro, Fredro hesitates for a second then takes a strong pull, he starts coughing and his eyes turn red instantly. Freddy fell in love with weed that day Wendel did not like Fredro hanging with Ron Du, he...
