CHAPTER 1:
Day Dream

T

he rain is falling heavily, hitting against the windshield as the wipers go back and forth, side to side, with a rhythm that is somewhat hypnotic. The sky is dark. There is the sound of the radio playing distorted Spanish music as the driver nods her head softly.

Her repeated glances in her rearview mirror reveal that she is thinking with intensity as she squints her eyes. The engine purrs, and without a doubt, the tapping of her fingers on the steering wheel keeps her mind occupied as she tries to synchronize the tapping with the faint bass line of the song playing on the radio that helps her stay awake. Her hair is still dripping wet because of the run from the porch of her mother’s house into the car. She is getting closer to her dwelling place, better known as her apartment. The atmosphere of the neighborhood shifts as Estella tightens her grip on the steering wheel. She is happy to be arriving home soon; anything is better than being in a homeless shelter again.

Estella’s memories of her early childhood often have her reliving circumstances that were out of her control. She was recently diagnosed by her doctor with insomnia.

Her doctor gave her some sleeping pills, and she took one just before arriving in her neighborhood. She did not realize how strong the pills were. Estella begins to daydream and falls asleep, thinking back to being a young girl, along with her sister, and how they were exposed to some things that would haunt the average person for a lifetime. For instance, there was an incident when she woke up to her mom and dad arguing; their volume was low. However, the tone and cadence of her parents picked up, indicating that something was seriously wrong. There was a rumbling sound of furniture moving. Estella stood at the top of the stairs and could hear her mother accusing her dad of spending time with a woman in the marketplace in town. Estella leaned forward at the top of the stairs, trying to hear what was being said.

Her dad’s name was Carlos. He was a man who worked in a factory on the assembly line. He was quiet most days, but if he was pushed, he had what is known as hot blood or a bad temper. Carlos had some issues with drinking addiction. He also had difficulty keeping money because he had a gambling problem.

It was late in the evening, and the main struggle for Carlos and his wife, Victoria, was keeping the volume to a minimum so that no one would be awakened in the house.

Estella took one step down, trying to hear what was being said more clearly, but she was still having a difficult time.

Victoria had the heart of an entrepreneur; however, she was somewhat fearful of engaging in conversations with people. Younger men would often flirt with her and even ask to take her out; she would decline 99 percent of the time. Victoria’s face was very young-looking, considering her age, and she had the figure of a fitness model.

Carlos began to raise his voice slightly, and then there was a faint grunt and loud smacking sound, followed by a thump. Estella continued to make her way downstairs as quietly as she could, though her very next step made a loud creaking sound. The next sound was of a glass breaking against the wall as if it had been thrown.

“You just wasted my last bottle of vodka, tu eres una estupida mujer (you stupid woman).” Estella slowly made it down a few more stairs. The creaking sounds seemed to be getting worse, along with the thumping sounds coming from the living room. Estella could not see what was going on, but she had a pretty good idea that there was some conflict between her parents.

Carlos popped his head around the corner and looked up the stairs at Estella.

“Get back upstairs to bed now! You were supposed to be sleeping a long time ago!”

Estella turned and ran to the top of the stairs, where she waited and listened as her dad headed back to the living room. She heard a slap and the furniture being moved forcefully.

Carlos yelled, “I’m so sick of you and your bickering mouth.”

“Get out of my house now Carlos, or I’m going to leave with Estella and Chelsea! “Victoria said, referring to their daughters.

”I believe that you are seeing someone else, and this is why you want distance between us,” was Carlos’ response.

Estella continued to lean forward, trying to listen to the conversation from the top of the stairs. She looked back and saw Chelsea moving around in her sleep. She sat up and gave a big yawn before lying back down.

The verbal conflict continued to escalate as Victoria was dragged past the bottom of the stairs by Carlos, by her ankles, screaming and kicking to get away from him.

Carlos let her go for a second so he could lean forward and back-slap Victoria across the face.

Estella yelled, “No, Daddy!!” as she began to run down the stairs, stumbling, almost falling and hitting the back of her head. She continued her pursuit to help her mom survive this vicious attack from her dad.

Carlos turned to Estella with a look of a mad man. “I told you to go back to bed!”

Estella yelled back at Carlos, “Leave Mommy alone. Why are you hurting her?

Stop it daddy, please!”

Carlos snapped, “I said get back upstairs, Estella, now!”

Victoria crawled up onto the couch and then rose to her feet, looking Carlos in the eyes. “Stop yelling at her!”

Carlos reached for Victoria’s neck with both arms outstretched and began choking her with a crazed look in his eyes. He squinted, clenching his teeth together, which caused a bulge in his jaw and a thick vein to appear on his forehead. Victoria tried to get away but fell back on the couch as Carlos squeezed her neck in pure rage. She gasped for air as her eyes began to roll back, and she kicked her feet in a desperate attempt to free herself from this domestic attack.

Estella heard her little sister walk down the stairs, where she saw the grave situation her mother was in, so in a panic, Estella ran and jumped on her father’s back, screaming, “Let mommy go!!”

Carlos was so zoned in his rage that it was as if he had blacked out. Out of desperation, Estella opened her mouth as wide as she could and tried to take a chunk out of her father’s shoulder, biting him as hard as she could. Carlos released his grip around Victoria’s neck and threw his head back, letting out a terrifying howl while reaching over his own shoulder in an attempt to free himself from the grip of Estella’s teeth. Her legs were going side to side and up and down like a rodeo show as Carlos continued to attempt to set himself free. Victoria opened her eyes wide and reached out to take her daughter off her husband’s back, but with Carlos moving side to side, it was almost impossible for her to grab Estella. With growing anger and frustration, he shoved Victoria over the arm of the couch and flipped Estella off his back, sending her across the small room head-first into the coffee table. Estella’s body seemed lifeless as she lay on the floor, eyes closed, motionless. There was dead silence in the room; the sound of a pin dropping could have been heard. Victoria sat up on her elbows on the couch and looked at Estella. At the same time, Carlos turned his head in the direction that he’d thrown her. Little Chelsea peeked her head around the corner and in her little sweet voice, asked the question: “Mommy and Daddy, what is wrong with Estella?”

Victoria jumped up off the couch to run toward Estella, but Carlos managed to drop to his knees before Victoria could get there. He slid his hands underneath Estella’s motionless body and picked her up, rising to his feet. As Carlos cradled her like a baby, Estella’s head hung over his arm. Victoria began crying profusely, and without hesitation, she began rubbing Estella’s forehead and hair softly. “My baby, my baby, Estella, wake up! Please wake up!”

Carlos noticed that Estella was breathing, though still unconscious. He said, “We need to get her to the hospital.” Little Chelsea did not understand what was going on, so she asked her parents again, “What is wrong with Estella?”

Carlos responded, “She is ok princess, she is ok.”

He began making his way to the car, Victoria and Chelsea trailing behind.

Victoria hopped in the back seat of the car. Carlos placed Estella on Victoria’s lap while Chelsea sat beside her. He ran to the driver’s side of the vehicle and hopped in, stuck the key into the ignition, and twisted it forward to start the car. The engine turned over but would not start as he pumped the gas. “Come on! Come on!” Carlos looked at his family in the back seat, and a tear rolled down his cheek. “It’s not starting, Victoria, I’m going to check something.” He popped the hood and fiddled with a few wires before slamming the hood shut again. He came back in and tried to start the car again. There was no change; it just kept turning over, and it was also evident that the battery was dying.

Estella still lay motionless in her mothers’ arms as Victoria began to rock back and forth with her eyes closed, praying, “God, please make everything ok with my baby; I’m begging you if you can hear me.”

Carlos hit the steering wheel with a hammer fist and began to ask out loud, “Why is this happening?” Victoria opened her eyes, still rocking Estella in her arms, and told Carlos to try again.

“The battery is almost dead, it won’t...
