SCENE 4

Light turn on Teacher Nk addressing the students in front of the Classroom

TEACHER NK:       A reality show will soon be coming up and interested students can get the registration form from me.

GRACE:             What is a reality show?

TEACHER NK:       A live presentation with rewards for participants who finally emerge winners.

BLESSING:             Is the reality show for everyone?

TEACHER Nk:       No. it’s just for female students.

EMILIA:             Is the form for sale?

TEACHER Nk:       No, free of charge.

EMILIA:             Am I qualified to join?

TEACHER Nk:       Only if you are a virgin.

EMILIA:             Okay Ma.

BLESSING:             What is the theme of the reality show?

TEACHER Nk:       The Ten Virgins and if you remain a virgin, you are a potential

winner (She distributes T-SHIRTS with the inscription:

NO THOROUGHFARE boldly written at the back)

(The students murmur as their teacher proceeds to write on the board)

Lights out

SCENE 5

Lights open on Mrs. Catherine is front of the classroom as she addresses the students on their performance

MRS CATHERINE:       What is happening to my boys? I am just looking at the scores from the exams you wrote weeks ago. Your scores were too low, or have

you allowed the girls to take over? (The girls scream in happiness as they jubilate) The girls really did great in the examination with Emilia and Clara having the perfect score of 100%. (Jubilations from the girls continue. Turns to Emilia) Do you have a word of advice for us?

EMILIA:       (Nods as she walks out to address the class) I feel pleased and honored to address and admonish you, knowing that it is a stubborn fly that refuses to listen that will follow a corpse down to the grave. We are the leaders of tomorrow, no skepticism. The bible says train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. You gain nothing by being bad, stubborn, arrogant, rude, and disrespectful. You lose nothing by being good, respectful, humble, and disciplined. The era of waiting for our parents to tell us when to come to school, when and how to read our books, and when and where to wash our clothes is over. The era of waiting for your teacher to teach you or correct you is over.

(Emilia Continued)I know what is good, and I do it whether my parents and teachers are around or not. Your future lies in your hands. Make good friends. Honesty may not give you all the friends in the world, but it will give you the right kind of friends you need to succeed in this world and remember, whatever you sow, you will reap and above all, be God-fearing. For the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Thank you.

(Class applauds Emilia as she walks back to her seat)

(Mrs Catherine exits the class and the girls follow after. The boys cluster to argue.)

PHILIP:      This Emilia girl is becoming more impudent by the day.

JOHN:             What she is doing is an insult to us.

CLETUS:       It’s just a piece of advice. You either buy into it or you sell it to the dogs—

PHILIP:       (Replies sarcastically) Better sold to the dogs.

CLETUS:       Now tell me, what is wrong with that advice?

PHILIP:       Everything. Why would she discourage her mates from hanging out with guys? No partying, no warm-up, and no clubbing all because of her sermon. One day she will also advise us on what clothes to wear and how to put it on our body.

JOHN:             I feel like breaking her head.

CLETUS:       Anyway, I have bought into her advice. You are being jealous.

PHILIP:       Small girl of yesterday, telling her elders how to live their life.

(Emilia enters smiling).

EMILIA:       Hello guys, what’s good for the gals?

CLETUS:      (Smiling) Nothing. You always reveal beauty.

PHILIP:       Hey! Do not look. This beauty is for adult minds like us. Baby we are thinking about you and your sermons.

EMILIA:       That one is past tense; do you care to hear the present one?

JOHN:             (Aside) another bolt from the blues?

CLETUS:       What is in the present?

EMILIA:       The girls are planning badly against you guys.

JOHN:             Is this a kind of gossip or what?

EMILIA:       They have vowed to take up all the good positions and leave the bottom pot for you guys to lick.

CLETUS:       (Screams) Abomination. Bottom pot! Impossible! They must be dreaming!

(Exit Emilia)

PHILIP:       When boys talk, coconut heads with fish brain will still talk.

JOHN:             (Talking to Cletus) Boy, evaporate from here! I will hurt Emilia personally.

PHILIP:       We need to tell her our story.

JOHN:             Yes, our story (Laughs). I have a story with Grace already.

PHILIP:       I have even forgotten mine with Clara.

Fade Out

SCENE 6

The students are having lunch at the refectory. John walks in and exchanges his food with Clara’s.

CLARA:       What is the meaning of this? (Everyone starts to laugh)

JOHN:       You need mine.

CLARA:       Sorry I need mine.

JOHN:             Mine is a balanced diet.

CLARA:       My fried unripe plantain and biscuit bone is iron and calcium.

EMILIA:       She doesn’t want your balanced diet. Please respect yourself and return her lunch

JOHN:             What’s your own?

CLARA:      (pushes his food at him) Can I have mine?

JOHN:             Iron and calcium will only make you develop muscles.

CLARA:       So I can beat the hell out of you anytime you put up a fight (everyone starts to laugh)

JOHN:      (starts to eat the plantain) Hmm, food from the slump (throws it out) I don’t need muscles.

CLARA:      (throws away his food flask) But better than this junk and fertilizer food of yours. Fertilizer boy (everyone starts to laugh)

JOHN:             You call my food a fertilizer food?

CLARA:      Yes I did, same way you called mine “food from the slump” fertilizer food can only make out of you a fertilizer boy with no sense at all and I rather eat my slum food and take a better position in the class than eating your balanced diet and end up licking the bottom pot, (everyone laughs). Tomorrow I’ll get a better job, and good pay, and earn my respect in the society, while you just continue under the grace of your father’s wealth (Clara runs off towards the classroom with her food flask. John goes after her). Clara sits and resumes eating from her food flask. John walks up to her.

JOHN:             Clara, I am sorry.

CLARA:       Do you care for my iron and calcium food again? (Presents her flask to him)

JOHN:             Thank you. I am sorry for the way I acted. I came to apologize.

CLARA:       I have forgiven you.

JOHN:             Can we discuss now?

CLARA:       Yes (Closes the food flask) About what?

JOHN:             I have been having sleepless nights.

CLARA:       Over what?

JOHN:             You.

CLARA:      (Surprised) Me? What? What about me? Dirty! Poor! Haggard! Hungry!

JOHN:             (Laughs)Why are you not cooperating with me?

CLARA:       What kind of cooperation are you talking about?

JOHN:             Why can’t we be friends?

CLARA:       Would I have invited you to join me to reduce this food to zilch if you were my enemy?

JOHN:...
