Living in the Underworld, Alexander longs for a life beyond the confines of his father's realm. His wish is partially granted when Hades tasks him with a mission: to retrieve a group of frolicking children from the fields of Asphodel. However, this simple task spirals into a grand adventure when Alexander encounters Scythian dracaena, mysterious prophecies, and other demigods who join him on his quest. Guided by a prophecy and accompanied by Troy, the son of Poseidon, and Kate, a daughter of Zeus, Alexander must navigate a world filled with divine politics and ancient grudges. The trio embarks on a perilous journey that leads them to face dangerous creatures, treacherous gods, and the ultimate challenge: retrieving Pandora's box, a relic that holds the power to bring hope or despair to the world. As they travel from the Underworld to the mortal realm and finally to the volcanic landscapes of Hilo, Hawaii, they must confront their deepest fears and insecurities. Alexander, in particular, struggles with his relationship with his father and the burden of his heritage. In a climactic showdown against the Olympian gods, the young heroes must prevent the gods from unleashing everlasting despair upon humanity while finding the strength and courage within themselves.
PART I
Alexander –
The Quest for Hope
I was summoned by my father, Hades, in the throne room. By the way, my name is Alexander. I’m the son of Hades, the god of the Underworld. Although my dad is not the father I wanted, he only wants me to do his dirty work for him, like destroy the souls of disobedient workers or wash Cerberus. My mother was killed a long time ago. She was a mortal, and I’m a demigod. I walked into my father’s throne room, and he looked annoyed at me in his black tux.
“Alexander, did you handle the traitor, Dolph, the guard?” Hades asked.
‘’Yes, father’’ I said.
‘’Good’’,he replied.
He took a sip of his nectar that he would take if he were feeling happy. Truthfully, Dolph, the guard, was one of the most dangerous and annoying soldiers. He had a crazy idea of becoming king of the Underworld. He would start riots and start rebellious groups to overthrow Hades. I caught him at the Lethe River and destroyed his soul.
“There’s another mission I want you to complete’’ Hades said.
I wanted a mission that took place in the mortal world. I’ve never been up there, and most of my missions were in the Underworld. I had some friends tell me all about it. It sounded interesting; I wanted to go up there more than anything.
“The fields of Asphodel are being consumed by frolicking kids. Find them and bring them to me’’.
“But, Dad, “ I replied. The field is a place where the good souls live, I don’t understand.”
My dad scowled
“If they were so good, they would be living in Elysium. And I don’t like to repeat myself, so do what I told you!” he roared.
‘’Y-yes father.’’ I trembled.
Hades threw a satchel at me. I didn’t know why he did it, but I was too afraid to ask.
I entered the field, and the souls were grazing. Some kids were blowing the asphodels. Maybe those were the kids my father wanted me to grab, but he said frolicking they were just playing with flowers. Then, I saw kids running through the fields. One was a girl in a brown tattered coat, and two boys. One had an eye patch, and the other had an American uniform that said ‘’cadet’’. I walked up to them, and they stopped playing. They looked at me with an expression that put a chill in my throat. They scowled, then smirked. I found it bone-chilling.
“Hello,” I blurted.
They just smiled and whispered to each other.
“Look, I need you three to come with me.”
The girl circled me. If I didn’t know better, she just hissed at me.
“I don’t want to do this, but I follow orders. Come with me, and I’ll tell my boss to go easy on you.”
They both hissed, the girl’s eyes flashed green, and they got taller. Their legs turned green, and their clothes ripped into armor until they were revealed to be humans with snake trunks. They were Scythian dracaena. I pulled out my sword. I lunged at the serpents, and then the girl serpent blew asphodels in my eye. One of them tripped me back on a ledge of a cliff. She pulled out her hand, and a trident grew. She held it up.
‘’Sayonara demigod!’’ girl Dracaena said.
She threw the trident, and it hit my neck, sending me flying across the cliff into the river. I sank to the bottom of the river and passed out.
I woke up in a tiny cave the size of my bedroom at my father’s palace. The cave was not made of rock but covered in dry mud. I turned around, and my heart stopped. I fell to the ground, and my jaw opened. I was looking at a corpse in a rocking chair. The corpse was dressed in an ancient Greek tunic. It looked like a bishop. I noticed that there was a note in its hand. I desperately wanted to grab it but was too scared to do so. Then, I heard my father’s voice trying to scare me. I walked to the corpse, took a deep breath, grabbed the note, and quickly backed away. I opened the note it said:
Ask me my
Future
I thought it was stupid but said, “Ask me my future. “The corpse’s head rose, its eyes glowed green, and it spoke eerie.
“You will go to the island in the south and face your greatest fear, restore power in Olympus, and be joined by two companions on your quest for hope,” corpses spoke.
The body died down and crumbled to dust, and then I saw a light at the end of the cave. A crack was opened, and the cave was made of mud, so I ran into the mud wall and broke off the wall. My face landed in the grass. I tumbled down a hill into a road. I saw these things moving in front of me. My Underworld friend Trevor told me all about the living world. He told me about these cars and the Earth language. I looked at the sign where the vehicles were going. It said Savannah, Georgia, within 5 miles. I walked onto the road, and all the cars stopped, and all of them sounded a loud horn. A guy popped his head out of his car.
“Hey fool, what are you doing?” the man yelled.
I just stared at him. He was probably in his fifties. He had a horrible hairstyle and wore a blue flannel sweater.
“Hey, I’m talking to you, fool!” he yelled again.
I wanted to grab this guy out of his car and choke him, but I figured I needed him to drive me to that city.
“May I join you as you go into that city? I’m lost, and I need a ride home.”
He just sneered and drove off, leaving me in the dust.
I had to walk to the city, my feet hurt. I hope that guy who left me in the dust gets his car stolen. I needed nectar, a drink to boost me up. I was so thirsty I stopped when I saw water on the road. I was so relieved that I bent down, knelt, and put my head towards the water. Then, a blue car came by, and I jumped up on my feet when the car drove right in front of me. The driver pulled his window down. He was a muscular Asian teenage boy. He wore sunglasses and a blue tank top on his car; a symbol of a trident glowed. I figured he was a son of Poseidon.
“Hi,” the boy said. You must be one of my companions. Now, come on, we have a prophecy to fulfill.
I hopped in the boy’s car, and we drove for two miles to Savannah. We had our introduction conversation. His name was Troy Hideo, and I was right; he was a son of Poseidon. He mastered three martial arts, jujitsu, and judo, which meant he knew how to kill or cripple his opponents. His mother was also killed, and he lived in Atlanta for six years. Then, he traveled to Japan to figure out his ancestors’ roots. He learned how to defend himself, and while he did that, he found a way to mix his martial arts with his water powers. He left Japan to fight off the furies who invaded his grandfather’s shrine, which were my father’s executioners. I haven’t seen them for months, though my father said they were trying to find more nectar, which I knew wasn’t true. You send your deadliest workers to find an unlikely drink. As we rode down the road, I asked him about the meaning of the prophecy.
“The prophecy says we need one more companion on our quest, and I found her. “ Troy said.
“Let me guess, she’s a daughter of Zeus,” I replied.
“Yes, and she is held in a hotel where a god operates.”
“Which god?”
“The hammer shark one.”
“Wait, Poseidon runs the hotel?”
He looked at me in a dumbfounded way.
“No, the creepiest god Janus,” Troy said.
Ugh, I met Janus before he came to the Underworld, or they both went to the Underworld. He has two heads and shares the same body as his other. He came to talk business with my father. It must have been about opening up that hotel.
“Five minutes, then we’re there,” Troy said.
I looked out the window. We were in the city all right. It had trees with peaches, and then we passed industrial areas and some rural houses until we got to the town. Troy turned into a street that made me nauseous. I saw a statue of a two-headed man a few blocks down.
“We’re here”. Troy said.
I hopped out of the car and faced the statue. It was the size of one of Cerberus’s heads. I looked at the hotel; it was gold on the whole thing. The guests in the hotel were filling up outside. An alarm was beeping out the entire hotel. The people were out of the hotel. There was a crowd right in front of us. We tried to get past the people, but there were so many people, like hundreds of them, we had no chance.
“I got an idea, “Troy said.
He momentarily looked at the bronze fountain and raised his arms, and the water rose. All the water looked like a blanket over our heads. We moved out the way Troy relaxed his arms, and the water fell all over the guest. They fell to the ground, and we ran for the doors. Inside were marble pillars, a white marble staircase, and Greek statues of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. We looked around to see where Janus was. Troy took an apple from his bag and threw it at the statue of his dad.
