This is the first English translation of the 183 letters exchanged by these key Protestant reformers between 1522 and 1531. It provides invaluable new source material for historians and theologians, opening the door for a significantly new interpretation of the Swiss Reformation.
The 183 letters which Huldrych Zwingli and Johannes Oecolampadius exchanged between 1522 and 1531 are a major resource for students of the Swiss Reformation. They have, however, been largely neglected because they have hitherto been available only in the original Latin. This volume translates them all into modern English, along with explanatory notes and a substantial introduction. The book as a whole proposes and initiates a significant re-assessment of several aspects of early Reformation history, such as the extent of Oecolampadius’s contribution, the precise nature of his relationship with Zwingli, and the strong connections that existed between the reformers of Zürich, Basel and Strasbourg.

Nigel Harris is Professor of German at the University of Birmingham. He has published numerous editions, studies and translations of late-medieval and sixteenth-century texts, including the 'Concilium' and 'Rychsztag' of the Zwinglian poet Utz Eckstein (2013, with Joel Love). Sharon van Dijk is Collection and Information Specialist in Special Collections at the University of Groningen Library. Her PhD thesis (UCL, 2021) is the first complete study of the nine Latin eclogues of Giles Fletcher the Elder (1546–1611).
