In the future a society finds a place to put all those who prove they want nothing to do with society. Max finds himself unjustly in this heap of man's rubbish with a single goal; to escape. While he might be at the center of his grandfather's dream, for him, it is a nightmare. After living with a serial killer his life can hardly get worse, or so he thinks. In the outside world he thought he understood right and wrong, but once inside, he discovers that sometimes the light is dark and the darkness can be filled with spots of light. A student archeologist finds herself choosing between her lifelong dreams, and her personal desires. In a place filled with struggle and death, she finds a man who wants to help her and is full of life. A tracker, who seeks to go up the ladder of success, discovers that his ladder is standing in quicksand. In the Wildlife Sanctuary Prison there is no parole, and the authorities are stacking the deck against the inmates.

Ashley had decided to start observing another person since she felt that John’s knowledge of her would skew her findings. The day after her confrontation with John, she set out up river because she had seen items in the river that seemed to indicate other people’s presence upstream. She had seen woven palm fronds and a couple of poles that appeared lashed together. She worked her way through the forest never losing at least the sound of the river. Most of the time she was able to see little glimpses of the brown water through the foliage, but occasionally she could only hear the gurgling of the slow water as it meandered by over the rocks and debris that extended from the bank into the river itself. Being not as cognizant as she thought she was, she nearly walked right into a large black caiman that was sunning itself in a patch of light just off the game trail along which she was walking.
All of a sudden someone grabbed her arm and yanked her roughly into the thicket just as the caiman exploded from its resting position and snapped its gaping mouth at the position in which she had been standing a split second before. The pair tumbled backwards through the undergrowth and she heard a man’s voice say, “Get up, he’ll keep coming.” As she tried to get to her feet again she felt the rough hands on her as she was pulled along through the brush. She knew that her tender skin was being ravaged by the foliage. After what she thought was ten minutes, but was only one, the current which had attached itself to her, ceased to pull on her and she collapsed in a pile. The man was bent at the waist with his hands on his thighs above his knees; trying to catch his breath. Ashley looked up into the face of a bearded man who had a terribly scarred face and involuntarily pulled back. The man said, “You were almost breakfast for that big ol’ caiman. They get their fair share in here, and if you hadn’t been such a delicate flower, I might have just let him have you, but I think that would just be a waste of some fine feminine flesh.” When he smiled, she noticed that he was missing several teeth and had one broken one. “What would your name be? I might guess Alice, but that would be too convenient.”
She tried to smile back at the man, but he truly scared her and all he had done was save her life. She hesitantly said, “Mmmmmy nnnname is Ashshshley.”
“It’s nice to meet you Ashley, they call me Dougey.”

“I suppose I should thank you for saving my life, Dougey.”
“There’s no reason to worry about that right now, I thought we’d get to know each other first,” he said and then laughed in a manner that made Ashley cringe.
“Come with me, you obviously need a guide, and as luck would have it, I am available.”
“That’s OK,” as she turned away, “I think I’ll be OK on my own.”
She then saw a transformation in Dougey that gave her the creeps. He screamed at her, “You think that you can have me save your life and then just walk away with a simple thank you. Look, girly, I can tell you that, that is not going to be enough.” He reached out for her and she pulled away.
She started to run into the forest, again plowing through the underbrush. So many of the plants in here had dangerous foliage, but Ashley was lucky that this particular area was devoid of the worst of it. It was one of the rules in the rainforest, don’t touch the plants. Unknown to Ashley, John Laasig had been watching her in the same way that she was supposed to be watching him.

When she almost stumbled upon the caiman he had been too far away to help her. He saw her suddenly plucked from the jaws of death by some invisible force. Then he had followed her scamper into the brush and when he saw that she had been saved by Dougey, he realized that he would have to get involved. He knew Dougey, in fact everyone within probably two miles knew Dougey or knew about him. He was scum. As a Navy man, it was a source of disgust to John that Dougey could claim this as well.
Dougey had been a Machinist’s Mate in the Navy and had been in trouble since his enlistment. He finally had straightened out long enough to make Chief Petty Officer and almost retire. On what was supposed to be his final deployment, he had kidnapped three young girls in Australia and taken them off into the Outback where he had used them for his own pleasure which included humiliation, as well as bondage and sadistic torture. A race ensued between the Navy and the police in Western Australia. As luck would have it, the Navy found him first and in what soon became an international incident, Dougey was spirited away from Australia. The one girl who had not died was taken to a Navy ship where she was treated for exposure, some lacerations and gave testimony about what had happened. The Navy convicted Dougey under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but the Aussies raised hell in every English speaking newspaper in the world, and Dougey was eventually returned to face the music in an Australian court. With Australia not having a death penalty, they were unable to satisfy their need for revenge; they placated their populace by asking the Americans to put Dougey into their WSP (Wildlife Sanctuary Prison.) The American Government asked the Australian Government where they thought he belonged. They wanted the Polar biome, but after some negotiations they settled on the Tropical Rainforest, because while his crime had not been against the government, like the remainder of the TRF population, he had been a representative of the U.S. Government when he committed the crime, so that was where they put him. The guards at the WSP Indoctrination Station had called him ‘Scarface’ initially, but after Dougey disarmed one of them and killed him with his bare hands, they only said it behind his back. Dougey was lucky that the WSP administrators had not immediately changed his assigned biome to Polar, but he had already been through his training, and they wanted him out of their area.
As John Laasig continued to watch Ashley (he had overheard her tell Dougey her real name) and this vile excuse for a human being interact, he knew that he would eventually have to act. He had his spear with him and he knew that the black tarry substance on the end of the tip would kill a monkey in less than a minute. He figured it might take a little longer than that to kill a human being. John crept closer to the two and heard Ashley tell Dougey that she was going to head out on her own. He saw Dougey grab for her and then saw her twist away from his grasp. As he reached out again for her, John let his spear fly. It caught Dougey in the back below his left kidney. Dougey whipped around and glared at John. He reached back and pulled the spear from his back. As he did, the wound began to bleed. Dougey’s fate was sealed once the spear punctured his skin. The tree resin that coated its point was a powerful neurotoxin and he had less than two minutes to live and only about a minute and half before he was paralyzed.
Ashley was unaware of anything happening behind her until she heard her attacker scream, “YOU FUCKING BOY SCOUT, I JUST WANTED A LITTLE FUCKING ENTERTAINMENT.” He started toward John, but then the toxin started to affect his motor control and he stumbled, and then fell to his knees. As he looked up he saw John headed his way with a large limb. Dougey didn’t completely feel the killing blow, as the toxin had already made him partially numb. Even without the blow from the limb, he would have been dead in less than a minute, but John didn’t want to wait that long. “That is for those two little girls in Australia, you piece of shit.” At Dougey’s scream , Ashley turned around and saw John crush his skull with the limb.
She joined the place where he stood. “Thank you so much. We keep running into each other.”
“You’re welcome, and free to go your own way.” She thought about that and realized that in less than 24 hours she had almost died three times. She knew that she was in over her head. In her mind she rationalized that she could put a Fossey-esque spin on her report, and write it as an observer who was included in the group. She realized that she probably would not survive in this place without this man. As she thought about her situation she...
