GAS WORKS PARK, LAKE UNION
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON
July 4, 1999
Lilith was strange, but even a weird girl needed hobbies; watching the fireworks did little to suppress her bloodletting desires this time. Unfortunately, it was more than a cloudy day with streaks of grey smoke billowing in the sky from the finale. All she could do now was mutter a sincere prayer while she stared vacantly into the air. However, she wasn’t alone — her less than nothing; boyfriend Ronnie was present, gawking at her as usual.
He observed the whole spectacle like some proud priest at an altar. Thus he tended to her wounds with fresh bandages from an emergency kit within the parking structure.
“I’m too weak to leave,” she said, holding onto one of the metal railings on her left.
“As you wish, my dear.”
Lilith motioned towards the center structure, instructing him to create a bed with the semi-rotted plywood lying around; he aligned some stones he’d found scattered around the park and laid them across from her.
“Go to sleep now, my Lilith.”
She slowly closed her eyes and then turned over on her left side like a new bundle of joy. Hours passed as she tossed and turned, speaking in tongues with brief murmurs in between as Ronnie watched intensely. Luckily, nobody else was present during their bloody celebration; security had left shortly after 11:30 pm. The breeze was chilly but feverishly quick as the moon shimmered across the lake, giving it an eerie sense of calm and beauty. Another hour had passed — nothing.
A brief sense of glee overtook Ronnie, but it was short-lived once Lilith opened her eyes. It was 5:00 in the morning, and it was still dark outside.
“You’ve lost quite a bit of blood, Lil.”
“Not really, not even close — but them. Get rid of those carcasses at once!”
About 10 feet away were two unrecognizable corpses of what appeared to be transient men; both bodies were mangled and drained of blood, oozing with flies. Poor souls in the wrong place and at a horrible time didn’t have a fighting chance — no one could imagine the horror of dying so violently. Ronnie dragged both bodies toward the lake and found some more stones to weigh them down. Twelve minutes was all that it took for them to sink. Thoroughly drenched, he returned to Lilith, who was still groggy from her troubled slumber. They locked stares onto one another. Their lust had intensified, even briefly, before their enjoyable, gory romp. Now wasn’t the time for lovemaking; they had to vacate the park quickly.
“Last night was fun, despite it being an utter failure,” she said while licking her lips, grinning at him. But, unfortunately, the cover of the night was running short — time to leave. “Get rid of your clothes quickly!”
“I know. I’m not stupid.”
“Hurry up, then; it’ll be light soon.”
Ronnie tore off his bloody clothes and tossed them into a lit trash can; all he wore now were boots and Calvin’s. It was a slow burn, anyway. They were fifteen minutes from home; soon, the light would rear its ugly head.
Lilith was too weak to move independently, so Ronnie carried her. How romantic. A few moments later, the sun began to rise. They finally returned home with less than three minutes left.
Their mausoleum of an abode welcomed them back with open wings; it had once been a duplex before being turned into a manor with a pair of gargoyles guarding the front entrance; indeed, a spectacular sight to behold, splendidly gothic.
“So good to finally be home,” Lilith whispered.
“Indeed, my Lil, indeed it is.”
Lilith required some fresh, warm libation, something of a jugular nature. So she grabbed a wine bottle of the great red stuff and began to drink like no tomorrow, droplets of blood streaming down her lips and onto her breasts. She savored the warm sensation, almost trance-like she always did.
Ronnie leaned in for a kiss but instead gravitated to her voluptuous bosom. A streak of blood shouldn’t go to waste. But, he thought to himself, I’ll take care of that, my love. Simply intoxicating. “You’re sweet as ever, Lilith, without a doubt,” he said with bated breath.
“I’m certain it’s the blood, Ronnie, dear,” she replied. A sliver of light shone through one of the protective shades burning her.
Her left forearm, exposed to sunlight for a minute fraction, still burned her; the smell alone was disgusting, but it could’ve been worse. Even though direct sunlight could end their existence, that didn’t scare them; actual human contact frightened them most — at least it did for Lilith, anyway. Ronnie was similar, but increasingly misanthropic feelings usurped his fears — those sick, introverted bloodsucking fiends were a pity.
A real dilemma was at hand and one that required a constant blood supply. What to do, what to do? Killing random strangers would prove costly if they weren’t careful. Sure, they’d been doing it for hundreds of years, but it didn’t make them professionals. They had to be smarter than that. All they had going for themselves was pure instinct and dumb luck, luck that would run out sooner or later. They weren’t stupid, just total novices in this arena.
They hadn’t found their niche yet; Ronnie and Lilith had advantages and disadvantages, which could become dangerous if not dealt with first. For most vampires, at least back in the beginning, killing their prey was a fine art. The seduction, manipulation, and dance were alluring drugs, and the aftereffects were total and complete ecstasy. Purest of the pure, yes.
Lilith and Ronnie had neglected to accept it — they killed indiscriminately, which showed in their naïve sense of confidence and approach.
“We’re running very low on blood,” Lilith said.
“Go to our usual place, then?” Ronnie asked.
“No! Not. That’d be an absolute disaster.”
“Well, then, I’m all ears.”
It struck Lilith like never before; for the first time, she couldn’t find the answer and drew a complete blank; intense feelings of grave concern and fear had washed over her. Old habits do die hard, but older, once-human ones refused to die — and often resurrected themselves. She had a right to be concerned, but having a freakout session wouldn’t alleviate matters.
“Lilith?” Ronnie asked, still waiting for her response. “Lil, did you hear me or not?”
Lilith continued to stare into a void of nothingness. “I heard you already — no need to repeat yourself repeatedly. I might have a plan; you must be patient with me. I’m feeling stressed out.”
“Splendid. Do tell now.”
“I’d rather show you instead.” Lilith might have looked to be in her twenties, but she was far older than any human in those days; she certainly had some mental defects. However, she wasn’t stupid by any measure — at 760 years old, she’d seen her share of joyous horror tenfold. A perverted sense of glee delighted her senses,
“The way I see it, we have our choice of hospitals to visit, and there’s a huge blood blank at each one; we sneak in as either a doctor or a nurse, grab enough, then leave.”
Ronnie stood with his mouth agape and then let out a hysterical laugh so loud it could have awoken the dead. Judging by her expression, though, she wasn’t amused at all. “My dear Lilith … are you brain dead or what! You expect us to waltz past hospital security, pilfer some pints, and be on our merry way?”
She disliked his sarcasm, lack of imagination, planning, and everything else involved in their survival. Either way, her mind was made up, and she wouldn’t give in to his emotional whims. Ronnie was skeptical about most things, but this was borderline ridiculous and a bit childish on his part. Something had to give and give fast.
“Fine, we’ll do it your way,” Ronnie relented.
“Finally, you’re beginning to understand, Ronnie.”
“I highly doubt it, but we’ll see.”
“Our best bet is Virginia Mason or Group Health Central; both are known for their large blood banks. So we can easily do this.”
“What about security, Lil? The place will be busy with medical staff, not to mention the priests that go to give last rites,” Ronnie mentioned.
Just like that, Lilith downed half of the last bottle of jugular wine, enough to spite him, “I find your skepticism downright insulting, so stop, please.” Ronnie thought it was a rash decision; yes, but she wasn’t allowing his sour mood to ruin her well-thought plans,
“Damn it, Lilith! That was our last bottle!”
She looked at the bottle and then back at him; smirking never did look good on her, but it didn’t matter; the damage was already done. The bottle was now empty. “Oops, all gone.”
“You crazy bitch!”
“Temper, temper, Ronnie.”
Lilith began to laugh, which seemed to piss Ronnie off; she enjoyed jerking his chains left, right, and every which way. She loved and hated him with a passion fit for a mad king and queen; they’d been this way for centuries now, with no signs of it ending any time soon. But, on the contrary, it seemed volatile to the bitter end what vile and troubled hearts they shared, unable to escape.
Once things calmed down, Lilith could enact her plan, with or without her boyfriend.
Ronnie was in the corner, licking his wounds as she planned her...
