Pripada poslednjoj fazi epohe realizma u knjizevnosti, pa je u njemu stvarnost prikazana kao sumorna, pojednici su beskrupulozni, a selo liseno svake idile. Kroz mnogobrojne opise slozenih unutrasnjih monologa, pisac nam u ovom psiholoskom romanu prikazuje tragicnu sudbinu mlade Ljubice kojoj susret sa seoskom sredinom, u kojoj ova uciteljica dobija svoje prvo zaposlenje, neocekivano donosi veliko razocaranje i patnju.

Seoska uciteljica (The Village Schoolteacher), published in 1898, is the starkest of Svetolik Rankovic's novels and a signature work of late realism. Written during the author's convalescence in the Bukovo monastery, the book strips the countryside of romantic varnish: opportunists rise, the weak are trampled, and ideals grow thin in the dust of everyday necessity. At its center stands the figure of the teacher-educated, conscientious, and painfully aware of the cost of principle. Rankovic's prose is plainspoken but unsparing; his moral vision, exacting. This Globland edition restores a classic that challenged the myth of the idyllic village and set a new standard for social truth in Serbian fiction.
