Chapter 2

MacIntyre Lobster was first opened as a Co-Op back in the 1900’s. A group of fishermen ran the place and as one fisherman left, they would vote another in. That was until Tommy’s grandfather passed away and left Tommy’s father a bunch of money. Rather than investing into the co-op Tommy’s father bought up half of the fisherman’s shares and ran the place himself. Eventually the business passed completely to Tommy, and it started to change. He started charging interest on charge accounts then raised bait and fuel prices. Some fisherman tried to leave but other retailers had a limited capacity. Recently there had been some strange people coming and going at odd hours. Most of Tommy’s workers would hang out and talk to the fisherman, but his newest truck drivers didn’t hang out and nobody knew them. Certain rooms had become off limits and were padlocked.

Tommy MacIntyre stood all of 150 lbs soaking wet and 5 foot 10. His greasy black hair with strands of white mixed in went past his ear lobes, but the length of his hair didn’t cover his bald spot on the top of his head. It looked like an old mop turned upside down. His face looked sunken into itself like his skin had been shrunk wrapped onto his skull. His clothes were always dirty and full of holes. He never wore shorts even on the hottest of summer days. He always had a cigarette in his mouth unless he was drinking his cheap vodka or doing some other vice. His other vices were at first just for him but was now a major cash cow. It brought in two or three times as much as the lobster business. His dealer was in Boston. There was a dealer in Portland but Tommy wanted to skip over him to get more profit. Crates of lobster would go down with one of his newest drivers who was also carrying cash. The truck normally would come back with empty crates, but now was coming back with cocaine, heroin and other drugs. Tommy would distribute to local dealers and keep a little to himself. All this while he was keeping the appearance of a typical lobster retailer with a restaurant. Tommy thought he had the perfect operation with the perfect cover.

Russell walked down the ramp puffing on his pipe and humming a happy tune. Clive Farrin was sitting on his boat stuffing bait bags. These two had been friends since they came into the world. They were next to each other in the maternity ward at St. Andrews and had grown up together.

“What’s got you all chipper this morning? And why are you so late getting down here? I had Tommy in a corner this morning,” Clive said while stuffing a handful of herring into a bait bag.

“Life, Clive…Life is why I am so happy and life is why I am late.” Russell said with an air of lightness.

“Christ…did Anne let you have some last night? You need to come back to reality, we got shit to tend to. Who is that girl that came down here for Jack?” Clive snarled at his old friend.

“What is the matter, Clive, nobody allowed to be happy?”

“No! Tommy has his head up his ass, you got your head up yours, and Jack seems to have his head up her ass. Meanwhile I’m the only one seems to care about our price.”

“If I had known you were going to put the heat to Tommy I would have been here. I had something to take care of. As for Jack, you know as well as I do he needs to take this step. To me this is more important than the damn price. The girl’s name is Madison, she is from away. Don’t you worry there isn’t a fisherman here that isn’t concerned with the price. Now get your head out of your ass and tell me what went on this morning.”

“Well, I had my finger to his chest asking for an explanation about what happened with the price change when she showed up. She kind of distracted everybody.”

“Yuuupp,” He chuckled. “She sure has that ability. No matter about Tommy he would have just lied to you anyway. I am kind of tempted to ask Lizzy if she knows anything. She is smart, honest and Tommy has been letting her handle some of the paperwork. Just the other day she was asking about the shipping receipts. I just don’t know how I feel about putting her in that position.”

“What we need to do is have a meeting. You, me, Jack and all the rest of the fisherman that fish for that snake. That way we know where everybody else is at.”

“Good idea, I’ll get Michael Williams to come too.”

“Why him? He’s not a lobsterman!”

“Well, if we are going to ask Elizabeth anything we should speak to her father first. Also he has roots here remember.”

“Yup…You think you can get Jack here or will he be… busy?”

“Well I think that Anne needs to have some “girl time” with Melissa. I think it would make her feel better about that.”

“By that you mean Jack and Madison. It is good to see that boy smile again. Shit, the whole time I was putting the irons to Tommy he had a goofy ass grin on his face. When she came on the dock he came to attention like he was in boot camp.”

“Yeah, it’s a good thing, Clive. I have a good feeling about it. Well, I will get a hold of Anne and get her to take Madison somewhere. I think between the two of us we should be able to reach everybody. I can call Jack, Mike, Nick, Andrew and the rest of the younger crew. You get in touch with Jim, Butch and the rest of the Saint Andrew’s retirement home prospects. We will all meet at my house at six. That gives everybody time to have suppah,” said Russell.

“Saint Andrew’s retirement prospects…. you ain’t to far from that you old barnacle” Clive fired back and with that the two old men parted ways.

Russell drove home knowing that Anne would be there cleaning up the house, tending the gardens and taking care of other chores. When he got there she was out in the garden. Her salt and pepper hair was tucked up under a F/V Red at Night hat. She had a t-shirt tucked into her blue jeans that were soiled on the knees from years of gardening. When Russell stepped out of the truck he could hear her humming and singing the song Melissa had sung last night. Russell leaned against his old truck in in awe of the woman he had been married to for 35 years. She was timeless. Her age did show but her spirit was full and powerful. She was wise. She had absorbed the knowledge of her mother and her mother’s mother and down the line. She could cook a Thanksgiving supper and never break a sweat or open a cookbook. She had stuck by Russell’s side even when he lost his boat to the bank and had to fish out of a twelve-foot skiff. She had also slapped sense into him when he got out of line. She was as tough as an old hard-shell lobster but as gentle as a new fawn.

“What you doing?” Russell asked his wife.

“Planting the vegetables, and also some watermelon,” Anne replied.

“Watermelon! Christ Jack will eat them up before you can pick um.”

“Speaking of Jack, we need to talk, Russell. What do you think of Melissa and all that is going on?”

“Well,” he was stumbling a bit not expecting that question after joking about the watermelon. “To tell you the truth… I swung by Stephanie’s grave this morning to ask her to give Jack a little help. I think it worked because when I got down to the dock I saw Jack kissing Melissa.”

Anne took a long stern breath as she stood up tall in the garden placing her hands on her hips. “So I assume you approve of this?”

“Yes I do. Jack is happy, Happier than he has been in a long while.”

“Yes, he is happy now, but what happens when she gets tired of this town or of him, and heads back to Hollywood. Where does that leave Jack?”

“I don’t know, Anne, but Jack is a big boy. He has fallen down, he is getting back up. If he falls again he will get up again. We took his training wheels off long ago, Anne.”

Anne relaxed her guard a bit. “I know Russell. I guess I would feel better about it if I knew her better.”

Russell got a huge grin on his face. “Funny you should say that. I was going to ask you to spend some girl time with her so I could get Jack’s attention at a meeting here tonight. Clive and I are going to meet with all of Tommy’s fisherman to see what is on everybody’s mind”

“Russell, just what the hell are her and I going to talk about? She is a movie star, she has nothing in common with me. When I said get to know her I meant over time, not all in one night.” Anne folded her arms with slight agitation.

“Calm down, yes, she is a movie star, and one you are a fan of last I knew, but she is also a girl. Christ, underneath all that glamour and fame she is a normal woman. I noticed it on the boat, and I think you did too.”

Anne let her arms down and placed them back on her hips. “Alright, I guess.” Anne still had no idea what she and Melissa would do or talk about.

“Good then, I will text Jack and let him know about the meeting and he can tell Melissa that you two are going to have some “girl time.” With that, Russell pulled out his phone and glasses and started texting Jack.

Back at MacIntyre Lobster Tommy sat in his chair looking out at the dock. He watched Clive finish stuffing bait bags. He was plotting in his head how to get even with Clive for making him look foolish this morning. “Nobody pokes their finger in my chest,” he said to himself. Wouldn’t be the first time he had to take care of somebody for telling him his business. He shrugged it off for the moment. He had other things to take care of. The shipping receipts that Elizabeth had brought to his attention were still sitting on his desk. He had to figure out how to...
