Chapter 10

Maria Nero took a seat at her desk. Several notes lay in front of her. One by one, she looked through them, but couldn’t find one from the assistant Carlo Mazzola. She turned around, but he wasn't in the office. So she reached for the phone to call him. Just at that moment, someone tapped her on the shoulder.

»Maria… «, she turned around. It was Carlo.

»I was just about to call you.«

Carlo looked at her with somewhat overdone remorse and said: »Scusa

With that, he turned the corners of his mouth down.

»Well, tell me, what is it?«

Carlo looked at her, smiling.

»In the meantime, I went to Signor Scarpa and took a DNA sample. He's a lovely man, and he was very understanding. I brought the sample to the laboratory, so it took a little longer. About the Professore in Milano... I spoke to the secretariat. The person in question is Professore Marini. He was in the middle of a lecture, but I got his direct dial number. If you want, I'll call right away. The lecture should be over now.«

Maria looked at him admiringly.

»That sounds good. Very well done, Carlo. I'll tell Paola and ask her when it's convenient for her. Thank you, Carlo, I'll call Professore Marini myself right away.«

Carlo was beaming all over his face, quite pleased with Maria's praise.

»You're welcome!«

He gave her the slip of paper with the phone number and then went to his desk. Maria rose and knocked on the door of Paola's office.

»Avanti!«

»Can I interrupt you for a moment?«

Paola was on the phone, but gestured for her to come in. Maria sat down on the chair in front of her desk.

»Signor Angelo, can we meet in an hour at the hospital?«

As she said this, she looked at Maria and made a gesture with her hand that said, ›Can you too?‹

Maria nodded to her.

»Good, Signor Angelo, then we'll meet in the cafeteria in an hour. My colleague Ispettore Nero will also come. See you later!«

Paola hung up, then turned to Maria and looked at her questioningly.

Maria began to speak: »I have the number of Clarissa Angelo's Professore from Milano, a certain Marini. I wanted to ask when we want to go there. If we still have the interview with the parents today, then maybe first thing tomorrow morning? Would today be too late? Or not? What do you think?«

One could see from Maria's face that she was quite undecided. Paola also thought about it, then spontaneously said:

»Better tomorrow, but let’s leave really early so we can get back in time. You know the traffic?«

Maria looked at her and said perkily: »How about riding the train?«

»Hmmh … «, that didn't sound bad either, Paola thought.

»Call him and first sound out when he has time. I am open to anything …«

Maria didn't need to be told twice and went straight to her desk. Less than three minutes later, she was standing in front of her again.

»If you are still open to anything ...we have an appointment with the Professore today at 4 pm. The train returns to Verona at 7:53 pm. So, at least today we would be in bed a little earlier than yesterday. Should I confirm?«

Maria winked at Paola.

Paola considered...

»Or ... if we finish the interview quickly, we could take a train back early ...«

Maria wanted to go one better, but Paola waved her off.

»Okay, okay, I admit defeat. We’ll go. Can you get the tickets?«

Maria's mouth stretched into a wide grin and Paola involuntarily had to start laughing.

»I’m already gone, must order tickets …«, answered Maria in a singsong voice.

Paola called her husband Francesco in the remaining time and told him that she would be having a conversation with Clarissa Angelo's parents at the hospital in about an hour and could take the opportunity to briefly look in on him, if he was not in surgery. She then called the Vice-Questore and reported on the status of the investigation so far. The Vice-Questore was, of course, unhappy because there were no real leads yet. They had neither a motive nor any suspects. But at least she was able to tell him that they were going to Milano later today to get new information about Clarissa Angelo's surroundings. When she told him about the status of the forensics, he sounded a little more relaxed. Suddenly the thought crossed her mind that she didn't have to go to the Vice-Questore in person for an interview today. With that realization, she felt much better and exuberantly said goodbye over the phone.

One more thing done!

A last look at the computer, at her mails, at her schedule, and poof, she shut down the computer and stepped out of her office.

»How’s my timing? Maria?«, Paola asked as she stood at Maria's desk.

Promptly came: »Perfetto! I am … «, she pressed the shutdown button of the computer, »ready !«

Both women said goodbye to their colleagues and made their way to the hospital. Once there, they looked around the cafeteria and went over to the table where the Angelo couple was sitting. After greeting them, Paola asked some questions, but the parents could not really say more than on the day before.

Paola turned to Signora Angelo: »I do have one question. The witness who found your daughter and immediately went for help said Clarissa said something which sounded like ›famiglia Ma ...‹. Does that mean anything to you or do you know what Clarissa might have meant by that?«

Signora Angelo thought about it, looking up, shook her head and answered: »I'm sorry, I don't know what she was trying to say.«

Then, turning to her husband: »Can you think of anything to say, Mario?«

You could see that Clarissa's father was also anxious to help, but he too answered in the negative.

»Well, we will eventually find out«, Paola said, addressing the parents.

»My colleague and I are about to go to Milano to meet with Professore Marini. We hope that he might be able to tell us something or give us some clues.«

The parents looked kindly at Paola. Signora Angelo spoke up: » I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for working so hard to solve this case. You are a good person!«

The mother had tears in her eyes. Paola was touched, took her hand and answered:

»This is important to me. My profession is a calling for me and I want to do everything I can to solve crimes and find justice for victims.«

Clarissa's mother nodded at her and her husband said: »And you know what? We are also so lucky with the doctors here. As tragic as Clarissa's fate is, we have the feeling that our Clarissa is being helped in every way. Now I know what I wanted to say. The nice, friendly doctor, Dottore Rossi - his name is the same as yours. What a coincidence!«

Paola winked at him: »It is not such a big coincidence, I know Dottore Rossi very well ...«

Signor Angelo looked surprised: »Oh, I see, he seems like a very smart person and so empathetic!«

Paola looked at him: »I'll tell you a secret: Francesco is my husband!«

A smile briefly flitted across the parents' faces.

Paola nodded at them, beaming, and spoke: »You are right, my husband is quite an excellent surgeon and doctor. I know that very well. The empathy thing also applies to him, he takes his profession also more as a calling. I'm sure that's the secret of why we are so happy together. Your daughter is in the best hands. Trust me

Commissario Rossi and Ispettore Nero said goodbye to the parents. Paola hugged the mother tightly as they said goodbye and whispered in her ear:

»Everything will be fine!«

Then the two policewomen left. Maria stopped by officer on duty, who was still posted outside Clarissa's room for security reasons; and Paola took the chance to quickly visit her husband.

»Avanti

Paola stuck her head in the door.

»Ciao, Bella, come in.«

Francesco came out from behind his desk and greeted his wife. He took her in his arms and they shared a heartfelt kiss.

»You can come to me more often!«, Francesco said with a large grin on his face.

»Just tell that to the Vice-Questore!«, Paola joked...
