His first major work, 'The Philosophy of Disenchantment' (1885), which reflects his deep-seated interest in pessimistic philosophy, was followed by 'The Anatomy of Negation' (1886). Literary acclaim came with the novel 'Imperial Purple' (1892), which showcased his fascination with historical opulence and immorality.
