John Fox, not to be confused with his namesake John Foxe, author of 'Foxe's Book of Martyrs', was a distinguished American novelist and journalist known for his realistic depictions of life in the Appalachian region of the United States. Born on December 16, 1862, in Stony Point, Kentucky, to a family deeply rooted in the state's history, he was educated at Harvard University and later at the Royal Academy of Munich, which was quite evident in the breadth of his cultural and literary understanding. Fox's literary style was marked by a deep empathy for the rugged terrain and the stalwart, if sometimes unruly, inhabitants of the Appalachian Mountains. 'The Heart of The Hills' (1913) is one of his notable works, alongside 'The Trail of the Lonesome Pine' and 'The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come'.
