Mansfield recoiled against her colonial upbringing and was determined to become a professional writer, engaging with literary circles that included D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. Her writing is characterized by its clear, precise, and unsentimental style, and its use of psychology to delve into the human condition.
