This book examines the career of Sir Orme Sargent, one of the most important and distinguished British diplomats of the twentieth century.
For almost a quarter of century, Sargent helped shape British policy towards Europe. Covering the period from 1926 to 1949, this study explores Sargent and Foreign Office responses during a tumultuous period which included the collapse of Weimar Germany, the rise of Fascism, the Second World War, Anglo-Soviet relations and the dawn of the Cold War. In doing so, it sheds light on an important but largely neglected historical figure in the study of twentieth century British foreign policy.

Adam Richardson is a historian and Digital Education Manager at the University of Leeds. His research focuses on the British Foreign Office, British diplomats, and international relations in the first half of the twentieth century.
